Decoration of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow for the coronation of Nicholas II", 1896

The collector of charitable donations for the construction of the temple. Russia. The inscription says: 'On the construction of a new temple in the name of the Birth of Christ, Nicholas Divotvůrce.'", 1896

"Petrohrad - Senné náměstí / Plaza Sennaya en San Petersburgo / Sennaya Square in St.-Petersburg", 1896
Colección / Collection Pavel Scheuffler

"Petrohrad - V přístavu petrohradském / En el puerto de San Petersburgo / English: In the port of St.-Petersburg", 1896

On September 3 is the birthday of

Mary Olive Edis, later Edis-Galsworthy, influential British female photographer and successful business woman born in 1853 in London who, throughout her career, owned several studios in London and East Anglia.
She was one of the first women to adopt the autochrome process professionally and became Britain’s first official female war photographer in 1919.
Edis’ first studio on Church Street, Sheringham, was purpose built for the Edis sisters by their uncle the architect Robert William Edis. It had a glass roof to allow in natural daylight which became an important aspect of her trademark style. In the 1930s her London studio was relocated to Ladbroke Square and a new studio was built in Sheringham on South Street. During her career she also opened smaller, temporary studios in Cromer and Farnham. Edis employed several assistants at her Sheringham Studio, the longest serving of whom was Lillian Page who did most of the Studio’s printing. Edis produced postcards of her work, featuring fisher folk, famous sitters and the photographer herself. Clients who ordered photographs would receive them mounted on branded card which was embossed with her logo.
Edis took her first autochrome portrait in 1912 and became known for her colour photography. Edis patented her own diascope, a device for viewing autochromes which allowed them to be backlit. Edis won a medal with her autochrome, Portrait Study, at the Royal Photographic Society's 1913 exhibition, and became a fellow of the Society the next year.
Edis was appointed an official war artist and photographed British Women's Services and the battlefields of France and Flanders between 1918 and 1919 for the Imperial War Museum. In 1920 she was commissioned to create advertising photographs for the Canadian Pacific Railway and her autochromes of this trip to Canada are believed to be some of the earliest colour photographs of that country.
Throughout her career Edis photographed many influential figures of early 20th century society, many prominent women at a time of great change for the role of women in British society. As well as famous sitters, Edis produced many portraits of local working fisherman their families at her studios in North Norfolk. Working in fashionable seaside towns of Sheringham and Cromer, these fishermen became minor local celebrities in their own right.
She died in 1955.

* Piergiorgio Branzi died on August 27th, 2022

On September 7 is the birthday of

František Krátký, Czech photographer born in 1851 in Sadská. He is one of the most prominent photographers and publishers of stereophotographs in the Czech lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
His father František Vojtěch Krátký worked as a painter (of both pictures and houses), as well as having a printing business. During 1864-67, and again in 1870-72, he studied printing techniques with his father.
In addition to portrait work, František Krátky photographed many landscapes and historical landmarks. Between 1885 and 1899, no other photographer travelled so comprehensively around the Bohemian and Moravian countryside. He concentrated primarily on stereo-photographs, which he began publishing from 1890, in the form of a pair of pictures, with a legend, pasted as original photographs onto cartboards. He emphasized the role of his pictures as teaching aids for learning to know about one's homeland.
With his camera he travelled through many foreign countries, obtaining some of his pictures from abroad by exchange, or by buying them from other photographers. Besides the Austro-Hungarian lands he visited the Balkans, Italy, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, and France. He obtained a stirring testimony from his stay in Russia during the spring of 1896, where he was a photographer on a special permit during the Czar's coronation. In the trade with foreign pictures he basically had no rival in the Czech lands. Krátký also published photos from the USA and Japan taken by other people, mainly by Czech explorer E. S. Vráz.
His advantage was his ability to integrate on a professional level, “all inclusive”.  He could take an advertising picture in the studio (or an outside photo); modify the picture, as well as add text; and print it in black-and-white or colour. In its time, his was a very progressive understanding of photographical services.
In 1898 he married and began a new life, where he travelled less, and concentrated more on publishing the photographs he had already collected. He focused on enlarging his business towards printing photographs.
His establishment reached its peak around 1909. In 1911, František Krátký had an eye operation, and his portrait studio in the town square was leased out. The illness, together with a crisis in the portrait photography business, as well as his general existential difficulties, led to his sale of the Photochemographical business in April 1913.
He died in 1924.
