Evgenia Saré [Pintura]

Evgenia Saré
(Evgenia Sarkissian)

Evgenia con sus obras / with her works "Sauteurs" & "Premier Amour"

"Premier amour / Primer amor / First Love", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80 x 80 cm.

"Frères / Hermanos / Siblings", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 46 x 50 cm.

"Ballerine / Bailarina / Dancer", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 81 x 66 cm.

"Jardin / Jardín / Garden", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm.

"Louve capitoline / Lobo capitolino / Capitoline Wolf", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 60 x 92 cm.

"Découverte / Descubrimiento / Discovery", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 24 x 33 cm.

"Déclaration d'amour / Declaración de amor / Declaration of Love", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80 x 80 cm.

"Naturaliste / Naturalista / Naturalist", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 35 x 22 cm.

"Promenade / Paseo / Walk", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 60 x 50 cm.

(Ellen Gaifejyan)

"Attente / Esperando / Waiting", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 55 x 60 cm.

"Evgenia en el taller / At the atelier", 1985

Evgenia Saré (Sarkissian) born in 1959 in Yerevan, Armenia. She graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in her hometown. Along with her job as a set designer (over 40 productions in theater and 4 in cinema), she explored several techniques to give life to her characters, ranging from ceramics to bronze sculptures, through etching and monotype. Since her moving to Paris in 1991, she devoted herself almost entirely to oil painting. Her works are in many private collections and museums.

"Ballon / Globo / Balloon", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 35 x 33 cm.

«My only motivation to paint is the pleasure that I get from the painting process. I feel good with my characters which are sweet, nice, stylish, and most of all, very human. I always work, even when I have no pencil or paintbrush in my hand, every look, every move, every word, every passerby, everything around me fill up my painter's treasury. I refine my characters, I take away the malice, the bitterness, the gray veil of daily hassles, and they continue their life in my paintings, in serenity and happiness.»

"Portrait de / Retrato de / Portrait of Vladimir Gordeev", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80 x 40 cm.

Little by little, we become familiar with the unusual activities of these singular creatures that evolve before our eyes, describing an ambiguous population, which nevertheless reminds us of real people who are part of our knowledge ... Saré created an aesthetic where lyricism meets the Baroque in all complicity with a welcome humor in between. In her paintings, the seriousness mingles happily with the smile, with a backdrop of latent anxiety. With her gentle madness, the artist recounts the tensions and joys of a parallel humanity that bears striking resemblances to ours. (Françoise de Céligny)

"Nuit / Noche / Night", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 45 x 50 cm.

Her work’s misshapen people all live in the same world. They tell an ongoing story; each painting is like a new scene of a disjointed play.
“In my family,” Sare said, “we call them Zyuziki. This word does not mean anything specific, but its sound connotes to us something sweet, gentle and a bit strange.”
Those are great adjectives for her characters, too, although they are more than a bit strange. They’re bumpy in all the traditionally wrong places. They stand together in weird ways. They wear gross things, decorate in odd ways. But none of that matters to the Zyuziki.

"Nourrice / Enfermera / Nurse", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 22 x 27 cm.

"Duo", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 33 x 35 cm.

«What seems ugly to us, they proudly reveal, and that does not make them ridiculous in the eyes of other Zyuziki,” Sare said. For us, yes, it may look like that, but to me it just means that weare not able to see ourselves.Who created the criteria of beauty? What does the appearance mean? How important is it? I suspect that we have different answers to these questions, and their answers I do not know. But, perhaps to their credit, ask us those questions and make us think.
For that they are wise, and the Zyuziki often bear knowing smirks directly at their human onlookers.»

"Psychanalyse / Psicoanálisis / Psychoanalysis", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 92 x 73 cm.

"Volière / Jaula / Birdcage", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 31 x 31 cm.

«They know much more than we do, I think,” Sare said. “They are watching us, attentively and friendly. They all know each other, and I have a very good reason to believe that they chatter about us in detail and they gossip. Zyuziki know all about us and do not condemn us for anything, do not scoff. Although, that knowledge of us humans makes them a bit sad. And, you will agree, that’s understandable.»

"Bateau / Bote / Boat", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 31 x 31 cm.

"Sans titre / Sin título / Untitled", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 24 x 15 cm.

Although the main and unique center of the artist’s work is the human being, men and women, they are always presented through sarcasm, tragic farce, bitter or sad irony. “The Human Comedy” – this is the main subject of Saré’s whole work. Even though fantastically ugly (in some way kings and queens chosen “for laughs” during the traditional Flemish fest of “King of Bean”), each of her personages, due to a sharp observation of reality, is precisely described with a psychological sense and a unique personality.
Portraits, double portraits, groups. The situations and relationships are convincing, the gestures and expressions are exact. The grotesque unexpectedly exposeswhat was hidden behind a personality and shows the typical characters. Wow! Well known faces: a close relative, a co-worker, a neighbor, a friend, a passer-by, or maybe even you, seen by Saré.
Time is absent in Saré’s works: yesterday, today, tomorrow? Why should it be defined? That’s how it is and it always will be. The space itself is theatrically conditional. Like on a forestage, the artist is representing the absurdity and the strangeness of the world of her endless fantasies and imagination. Where does the action take place? Wherever! This can happen in France, in Russia or in Armenia – anywhere.
In fact, the “worldly outlook of the cat Murr” (one of of Saré’s favorite personages re-interpreted by the artist in her own way), the philistinism, the convention of human relations, the narrow-minded reasonableness, the vulgarity, the false, the hypocrisy, of which the artist reveals the undestructible character, do not have any national or geographical definitions. People appearing in the “jester round-dance” of Saré have many things in common, they are all the same, and their number is incalculable. (Ellen Gaifejyan)
