In the post published in February last year, dedicated to the work of the remarkable Argentine painter Gabriel Grün, I quoted that there would be more in the future. Here a new selection of paintings and drawings, and some artist's comments extracted from his blog.

Óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 90 x 60 cm., 2015

«This work of modest size is a sort of wink to the aesthetics of Odd Nerdrum, whose aesthetics I had in the eye of the mind when I devised it. Having said that, it is a good example of how sometimes the finished work diverges from the idea, in my intention the painting was much more ocher in chroma, and made on a freely way, with bolder brushstrokes and constructors of form .. but that's the thing, painting often depends on what the painter can really do, what it is, for more influences or imitations that he intends to follow. The result anyway makes me happy.
I wanted to give it a certain birdish air, with a memory of those thieves of eggs who plundered the Great Faike to sell them for their rarity, or the same birds that steal eggs to feed themselves. The general air had to make the figure inhabit this world of archetypes, of course, with the intention of fixing a new one, and settle their actions as exemplars.»

"Arpía / Harpya", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 130 x 80 cm., 2005

Gabriel Grün is an artist born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1978. Gabriel paints as a classic, but talks about his work as "inexorably contemporary". He works following the lines of the old masters, preparing his own paintings with oils and pigments, and spending long, long time to each work.

"Magdalena / Magdalene", óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 180 x 70 cm., 2006

"Beso de Judas / Kiss of Judas", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 60 x 90 cm., 2010

Boceto para la deformación de la cabeza / Sketch for the deformation of the head

«Black Hole Allegory was born of my will to approach a subject of scientific modernity with the conceptual weapons of the allegorical language of the past. (...)
This link with science and its stimulating capacity is perhaps the bridge between this approach to the black hole and the painting of the past. I did not follow the signs of astrology, among other things because they are constantly updated (a piece of S. Hawking I read last week says directly that they would not exist) but rather I wanted to represent the idea, the feeling, allegorically, of an astral hollow that eats everything. So I did what the alchemists, I put it on the head of a lady, to see how it is, the rest of the landscape responds more or less subtly to this attraction, just like the frame, on this I want to draw particular attention since in a sense it's what I'm most proud of. I did it by combining two different frames in a way truly exquisite, and then I tensed a thick cloth which was quite difficult, using a trick I learned in my restorative times moistened with caution the reverse and when drying gave adequate tension, the result resembles a little door of the Maghreb.»

"Homme Sans Bras", óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 200 x 110 cm., 2016

«My new painting, 'Homme sans bras', takes inspiration from an engraving appeared in the book of monsters and prodigies by Ambroise Parè, an innovative French surgeon whose mind inhabited the diffuse intermediate world between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The image struck me in all its potential to be reinterpreted in a large format oil, with allusions to the iconography of the Tarot, - I associated it with the Magician -, the presentation of a complete story that is unraveling at different levels on the background. Naturally the subject offered the possibility of overloading ir with some details... but for that I do not need to look for excuses, I used many elements already present in the small engraving, and I played with the sense of several of them. The image appealed to me for the attractiveness of a figure who, although limited, manages to accomplish exploits thanks to his ingenuity, to articulate his few possibilities in surprising results. This is a historical case, referred to the doctor, who is actually one of the least fantastic within his usual interests.»
