Pintando perros / Painting Dogs (LXVII)

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Il Guercino)

When portraits are given ambitious attributions, scholars talk up their psychological subtlety. This is true even when the sitter has four legs. "Seldom in paintings of dogs does one see such individuality and personality so wonderfully portrayed," said Lobkowicz Collection (Prague) curator John Somerville. "This told me at once this was not by any ‘dog painter’ but by a great artist."

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, best known as Guercino, or il Guercino, was an Italian Baroque painter and draftsman born in 1591 in Cento, active in Rome and Bologna. The vigorous naturalism of his early manner is in contrast to the classical equilibrium of his later works. His many drawings are noted for their luminosity and lively style.
At an early age he acquired the nickname Guercino (Italian for 'squinter') because he was cross-eyed. Mainly self-taught, at the age of 16, he worked as apprentice in the shop of Benedetto Gennari, a painter of the Bolognese School. By 1615, he moved to Bologna, where his work was praised by Ludovico Carracci. He often claimed that his early style was influenced by a canvas of Ludovico Carracci that he saw in the Capuchin church in Cento. Some of his later works are closer to the style of his contemporary Guido Reni, and are painted with more lightness and clearness.
Guercino was recommended by Marchese Enzo Bentivoglio to the newly elected Bolognese Ludovisi Pope, Pope Gregory XV in 1621. The years he spent in Rome, 1621–23, were very productive. After the death of Gregory XV, Guercino returned to his hometown.
In 1642, following the death of Guido Reni, Guercino moved his busy workshop to Bologna and become the city's principal painter.
Guercino was remarkable for the extreme rapidity of his executions: he completed no fewer than 106 large altarpieces for churches, and his other paintings amount to about 144. He was also a prolific draftsman. He continued to paint and teach until his death in 1666.

Oudry strives to faithfully render the inherent tension of this dog breed. This last characteristic is not without recalling the pose of Misse in the painting, now preserved in the Château de Fontainebleau, representing two royal greyhounds, that the artist painted for the apartments of Louis XV in Compiègne. As part of this commission, Oudry made seven other portraits of the King's favorite dogs, a domain previously reserved for his predecessor. Indeed, Desportes, pioneer of the kind, allowed these effigies canines to take a real importance around 1702 by realizing the door tops of the antechamber of the apartments of Louis XIV at the Château de Marly. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic pictures of animals and his hunt pieces. I already published more than once about Oudry (see links below). In this selection, some of his many dog's portraits.

Fuente

We know other portraits of dogs painted by Oudry in 1725. The 'Mercure de France' reports that this year Oudry painted "by nature, by order of the King, the portraits of some English greyhounds, of which SM has was very happy 3". Placed over door in the king's room in Compiegne in 1733, 'Misse et Turlu', greyhounds of Louis XV, are today preserved in the castle of Fontainebleau (see above) . It is the same for 'Lise et trois pheasants' (see below).
Oudry pays little attention to the landscape in which he places this 'White dog pointing a red partridge'. The point of view adopted gives the animal its majesty and makes it possible to think that it is a composition intended to be placed above the door. The theme will be retaken in a tapestry of Beauvais, a factory for which he made cardboards from 1726 and which he will be appointed director in 1734. Source
