El 6 de Marzo es el cumple de
Ville Akseli Juurikkala, fotógrafo, director de videos musicales y cineasta finlandés nacido en 1980, conocido por su trabajo con varias estrellas del rock y el pop en todo el mundo, entre ellos Slash, Michael Monroe, Good Charlotte, Nightwish y HIM, entre otros.
Hijo de los directores de cine Kaija Juurikkala y Matti Tukiainen, que trabajaron para la Organización Central de Sindicatos de Finlandia, Juurikkala se crió en Lohja donde vivió durante algunos años, antes de mudarse a Vantaa con su madre y su hermano, luego del divorcio de sus padres. En su adolescencia tocó la guitarra en la banda Evil Devil, y a los dieciséis años se inclinó hacia la fotografía. The son of film director Kaija Juurikkala and Matti Tukiainen, who worked for the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions, Juurikkala grew up in Lohja for a few years, before moving to Vantaa with his mother and brother, after his parents' divorce. In his teenage years, Juurikkala played guitar in the band Evil Devil, and later took up photography at age sixteen. He eventually applied to the Helsinki University of Art and Design, but was rejected.

After his rejection from Helsinki University, Juurikkala soon found work as photographer for City-magazine and eventually shifted to shooting advertisements, before being asked to do a photobook for the band The 69 Eyes, who were fans of his work. Juurikkala soon became a prominent rock photographer in Finland, working with the likes of Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Hanoi Rocks and HIM. In 2008, Juurikkala was introduced to the members of Good Charlotte, who asked him to join them on tour as their photographer. Juurikkala accepted, and continued to work with the band extensively, ultimately relocating to Los Angeles. During his time there, Juurikkala also worked with Kat Von D, Slash and Chester Bennington, among others. Aside from musicians, Juurikkala has worked with other prominent figures, such as the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, as well as Finnish Formula One driver Mika Häkkinen. Over his career, Juurikkala has had several exhibitions of his work all over the world, including in New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, as well as Finland.

"La fotografía ha sido parte de mi vida desde que tenía catorce años, cuando comencé a hacer fotos con una glorificada cámara fotográfica de cajón. Parecía un proceso mágico, permitiéndome conservar para siempre en película lo que mis ojos veían y lo que sentía mi corazón, mientras exploraba los distintos barrios de la ciudad de Nueva York. Lo que me interesaba era la vida cotidiana y los lugares donde estaba sucediendo. Tomar fotos me permitía escuchar las historias de las personas que fotografiaba, lo que satisfizo una inmensa curiosidad por aprender y comprender las vidas de otros, vidas diferentes a la mía en experiencia y edad.
El juego de luces en caras, edificios y detalles arquitectónicos, escenas callejeras y objetos inanimados fue lo que creó esa magia, que sentí tan profundamente. La luz pura y sus sombras resultantes, fue lo que me hizo sentir una sincronía especial en algún lugar profundo, en un lugar desconocido, cuando todos los elementos de la imagen se unían. Fue un tipo especial de felicidad.

Ida Wyman, American photographer born in 1926 in Malden, Massachusetts.
"Photography has been a part of my life since I was fourteen when I began making pictures with a glorified box camera. It seemed like a magical process, allowing me to hold forever on film what my eyes saw and what my heart felt, as I explored the various neighborhoods of New York City. Everyday life and where it was happening was what interested me. Taking pictures enabled me to hear the stories of the people I photographed, which satisfied an immense curiosity to learn and understand the lives of others, lives different in experience and age from my own.
The play of light on faces, buildings and architectural details, street scenes and inanimate objects was what created that magic, which I felt so keenly. Pure light and its resulting shadows, was what made me feel a special synchrony somewhere deep inside, in an unknown place, when all elements of the picture came together. It was a special kind of happiness.

When I was sixteen, I began to work at Acme News Pictures where, in an all male environment, I became both their first mailroom "girl" and their first "girl" printer. During lunch hours and weekends, I would shoot picture "stories" which I began showing to editors at magazines. My own self-assignments led to real photo assignments in various parts of the country for Business Week, This Week, Life, Fortune and other major publications of the day. In later years, I also did work for The New York Times, The American Lawyer, Gannett Newspapers, Murdoch magazines and others.
When not shooting for publication, I'd explore whichever city I was in, shooting for my own enjoyment, still satisfying my ever-present curiosity. I am still taking pictures and hope to continue to do that as long as I can lift a camera.
My work is in the Photo Collection of the New York Public Library, The Life Gallery of Fine Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Columbus Museum of Fine Art as well as in numerous private collections."

Félix Adrien Bonfils, fotógrafo y escritor francés nacido en 1831 en Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort, activo en Oriente Medio. Fue uno de los primeros fotógrafos comerciales en producir imágenes de Oriente Medio a gran escala, y entre los primeros en emplear un nuevo método de fotografía en color, desarrollado en 1880.
Trabajó como encuadernador, y en 1860 se unió a la expedición del General d'Hautpoul al Levante. Poco después de regresar del Líbano se convirtió en fotógrafo.
En 1857 se casó con Marie-Lydie Cabanis. Cuando su hijo Adrien cayó enfermo, Félix recordó las verdes colinas alrededor de Beirut y lo envió allí para que se recuperara, acompañado por la esposa de Félix. La familia se mudó a Beirut en 1867, donde abrieron un estudio fotográfico llamado "Maison Bonfils".

Maison Bonfils produjo miles de fotografías del Medio Oriente. Trabajó tanto con su esposa como con su hijo. Su estudio se convirtió en "F. Bonfils et Cie" en 1878. Fotografiaron escenas posadas, con modelos vestidos con prendas del Medio Oriente, y también historias de la Biblia. Bonfils tomó fotografías en el Líbano, Egipto, Palestina, Siria, Grecia y Constantinopla (hoy Estambul). Si bien Bonfils produjo la gran mayoría de su obra, se sabe que su esposa, Lydie, también realizó algunos de los retratos de estudio, especialmente los de mujeres del Medio Oriente, que eran más propensas a posar para una fotógrafa.
Bonfils fue uno de los primeros fotógrafos en emplear la nueva técnica de Photochrom, una técnica de impresión fotográfica en color desarrollada en 1880. Maison Bonfils fue uno de los estudios más prolíficos de Medio Oriente a finales del siglo XIX.
Félix murió en 1885.

On March 8 is the birthday of
Félix Adrien Bonfils, French photographer and writer born in 1831 in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort, who was active in the Middle East. He was one of the first commercial photographers to produce images of the Middle East on a large scale, and amongst the first to employ a new method of colour photography, developed in 1880.
He worked as a bookbinder but in 1860 he joined General d'Hautpoul's expedition to the Levant. Soon after returning from Lebanon he became a photographer.
In 1857, he married Marie-Lydie Cabanis. When his son, Adrien, fell ill, Félix remembered the green hills around Beirut and sent him there to recover, being accompanied by Félix's wife. The family moved to Beirut in 1867 where they opened a photographic studio called "Maison Bonfils".

Maison Bonfils produced thousands of photographs of the Middle East. He worked with both his wife and his son. Their studio became "F. Bonfils et Cie" in 1878. They photographed posed scenes, dressed up in Middle Eastern regalia, and also stories from the Bible. Bonfils took photographs in Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Greece and Constantinople (now Istanbul). While Bonfils produced the vast majority of his work, it is known that his wife, Lydie also made some of the studio portraits, especially those of Middle Eastern women, who were more inclined to pose for a female photographer.
Bonfils was amongst the first photographers to employ the new technique of Photochrom, a photographic colour printing technique, developed in 1880. Maison Bonfils was one of the most prolific studios in the Middle East in the late 19th-century.
He died in 1885.

Jo Ractliffe, fotógrafa y profesora sudafricana nacida en 1961 en Ciudad del Cabo. Se la considera una de las "fotógrafas sociales" más influyentes de Sudáfrica.
Se educó en Ciudad del Cabo, incluyendo su Diploma en Bellas Artes en la Escuela de Arte Ruth Prowse, Woodstock, su Licenciatura en Bellas Artes (1985) y su Maestría en Bellas Artes (1988) en la Escuela de Bellas Artes Michaelis, en el Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo.
A partir de su primera muestra, la de su Maestría en Bellas Artes en el Irma Stern Museum, la fotografía de Ractliffe ha ganado atención internacional con muestras en Sudáfrica, en el MET, MoMA, Tate Modern y la Bienal de Gwangju en Corea del Sur. Okwui Enwezor ha descrito a Ractliffe como "una de las fotógrafas más exitosas y menos valoradas de su generación". Las obras de Ractliffe se han exhibido de manera independiente y junto con otros artistas notables como David Goldblatt, Guy Tillum, William Kentridge, Pieter Hugo y Zanele Muholi.

Today, March 9, is the birthday of
Jo Ractliffe, South African photographer and teacher born in 1961 in Cape Town. She is considered among the most influential South African "social photographers."
She pursued her education in Cape Town, including her Diploma in Fine Art at Ruth Prowse School of Art, Woodstock, and her Bachelor of Fine Arts (1985) and her Master of Fine Arts (1988) at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town.
Starting from her first show, the Master of Fine Arts Graduate Show at the Irma Stern Museum, Ractliffe's photography has gained international attention with shows in South Africa, at the MET, MOMA, Tate Modern, and the Gwangju Biennial in South Korea. Okwui Enwezor has described Ractliffe as “one of the most accomplished and under-rated photographers of her generation.” Ractliffe's works have been exhibited independently and in conjunction with other notable artists such as David Goldblatt, Guy Tillum, William Kentridge, Pieter Hugo, and Zanele Muholi.
She has received numerous awards. Her photobook As Terras do Fim do Mundo was awarded "Best Photobook of 2010" at the International Photobook Festival in Kassel and she was nominated for the Discovery Prize at the Rencontres d'Arles Photography Festival in 2011.

According to her artist’s statement Ractliffe is interested in exploring “things that are ephemeral - desire, loss, longing - and their relationship to photography. I am also curious about what we don't expect from photographs, what they leave out, their silence and the spaces they occupy between 'reality' and 'desire'. I try to work in an area between the things we know and things we don't know; what sits outside the frame. I am interested in exploring these oblique and furtive 'spaces of betweenness', and in how they figure in producing meaning in a mode of representation that seems so often predicated on specificity and transparency.”
