Aniversarios, Fotografía (X) [Abril / April 7-13]

El 7 de Abril es el cumple de

Kenneth Gustavsson, fotógrafo sueco nacido en 1946.
Gustavsson se crió en un suburbio al noroeste de Estocolmo. Entre 1964 y 1967 estudió fotografía en la Fotoskolan, en la misma ciudad, al mismo tiempo que Anders Petersen. El responsable era Christer Strömholm. Tras su graduación en 1967, fundaron con Petersen la agencia de fotografía Saftra (Saftra Reportage Fotografi).
La revista de fotografía sueca FOTO publicó el trabajo de Gustavsson en los '60. Junto con Anders Petersen, Gustavsson retrató los barrios bajos de Estocolmo para una exhibición que tuvo lugar en el Stockholm City Museum en 1969. Tras haberse alejado de la fotografía durante la mayor parte de los '70, una publicación en la revista ETC en 1983 revivió la carrera de Gustavsson. Desde entonces realizó trabajos en Belfast, Chicago, Reykjavik y New York para la revista. En 1984 fue galardonado con el Premio de Fotografía de la revista FOTO. Murió en 2009.



El 8 de Abril es el cumple de

Ida Kar (Ida Karamian, Ида Карамян), fotógrafa rusa de origen armenio nacida en 1908, reconocida por sus retratos de artistas y escritores famosos.
Pasó su infancia entre Rusia, Armenia, Irán y Egipto. En 1928 se trasladó a París con el fin de estudiar química y medicina pero pronto simpatizó con los surrealistas y se interesó por la fotografía. Al regresar a El Cairo en 1933 abrió un estudio fotográfico y participó en el desarrollo del surrealismo en Egipto.
En 1945 se trasladó a Londres participando en el movimiento surrealista inglés por lo que su obra comenzó a difundirse. En 1954 participó en una exposición colectiva con el título de Forty Artists from Paris and London (Cuarenta artistas de París y Londres) y en 1960 realizó su primera exposición individual. Murió en 1974.



El 9 de Abril es el cumple de

Eadweard James Muybridge (nombre de nacimiento Edward James Muggeridge), fotógrafo inglés nacido en 1830, importante por su trabajo pionero en estudios fotográficos del movimiento y una temprana proyección de imágenes.
Emigró a los Estados Unidos de joven y se convirtió en vendedor de libros. Regresó a Inglaterra en 1861 y se dedicó a la fotografía de forma profesional, aprendiendo los procesos de placas de colodión húmedo, y registrando al menos dos patentes británicas para sus inventos. Regresó a San Francisco en 1867 y al año siguiente sus grandes fotografías del Valle de Yosemite le hicieron mundialmente famoso. Hoy en día, Muybridge es conocido por su trabajo pionero en locomoción animal en 1877 y 1878, utilizando múltiples cámaras para captar el movimiento en fotografías "stop-motion", y su zoopraxiscopio, un dispositivo para proyectar películas que antecedió a la banda de film flexible perforada que se utilizó en cinematografía. Murió en 1904.

El 10 de Abril es el cumple de

Farah Mahbub (Farah Jee), fotógrafa artística y profesora pakistaní.
Nació en 1965 y ha obtenido el segundo premio en la categoría Bellas Artes con la obra titulada "Líneas de la Vida y Manuscritos 25" en PX3, Premio de la Fotografía de París.
Farah se graduó en el Colegio P.E.C.H.S. de Karachi con una Licenciatura en Artes (1987). Ha estado trabajando como fotógrafa profesional desde 1988. Durante estos años ha realizado fotografía artística para su expresión personal y trabajos como freelance para diversas publicaciones. Se unió a la Escuela de Arte y Arquitectura del Valle del Indo en Karachi (Pakistán) como profesora en 1997.

El 11 de Abril es el cumple de

Dody Weston Thompson, fotógrafa y cronista de la historia y el arte de la fotografía. Aprendió el arte en 1947 y desarrolló su propia expresión de fotografía "directa" o realista, el estilo que surgió en el norte de California en la década de 1930. Dody trabajó en estrecha colaboración con los iconos contemporáneos Edward Weston (su ex- suegro), Brett Weston (su ex marido) y Ansel Adams (como asistente y amiga), desde fines de la década del '40 y durante la del '50, con colaboraciones adicionales con Brett Weston en los '80.
Dody fue invitada en 1949 a participar en la organización fotográfica Grupo f/64, un bastión del emergente Movimiento Fotográfico de la Costa Oeste. En 1952 fue co- galardonada con el prestigioso Premio Albert Bender M. (conocido informalmente en Occidente como el "Pequeño Guggenheim"), que financió un año de trabajo en fotografía. Su trabajo de cámara está representado en docenas de museos y colecciones privadas, así como en muchos libros de fotografía y revistas. También participó en exposiciones individuales y múltiples exposiciones colectivas desde 1948 hasta 2006, en los Estados Unidos y Japón. Murió en 2012.

El 12 de Abril es el cumple de

Antonín Kratochvíl, fotoperiodista estadounidense nacido en la República Checa en 1947. Es miembro fundador de la agencia "VII Photo Agency". Recibió su licenciatura en fotografía en la academia Gerrit Rietveld (Ámsterdam, Holanda). Kratochvíl ha fotografiado una amplia variedad de temas, incluyendo los niños de la calle de Mongolia para el Museo Nacional de Historia, y la guerra de Irak para la revista Fortune.
Ha recibido numerosos premios y reconocimientos por sus fotografías. Uno de los más recientes en 2005, el Lucie Award por Notables Logros en Fotoperiodismo, y el Golden Light Awars por mejor libro documental.

El 13 de Abril es el cumple de

Carlos Endara Andrade, fotógrafo ecuatoriano nacido en 1865 que desarrolló su trabajo en Panamá, convirtiéndose en uno de los pioneros de la fotografía de aquél país.
Se trasladó a Panamá en 1886 en busca de su padre que estaba trabajando en la construcción del Canal y como disponía de estudios de dibujo entró a trabajar en la Compañía Universal del Canal Interoceánico. Tras conocer al fotógrafo francés Luis Blanc se inició en la fotografía y pronto se asoció con Epifanio Garay con el que fundó el estudio fotográfico "Garay-Endara" de Panamá en 1888. Entre 1899 y 1904 estudió Bellas Artes en París, especializándose en las técnicas fotográficas.
Su trabajo fotográfico se centra en el retrato aunque también refleja aspectos clave de la vida en su época.
Colaboró en diferentes revistas y periódicos panameños, y llegó a ser el fotógrafo oficial de varios presidentes. Murió en 1954.

On April 7 is the birthday of

Kenneth Gustavsson, Swedish photographer born in 1946.
Gustavsson grew up in a suburb north west of Stockholm. Between 1964 and 1967 he studied photography at the Fotoskolan in Stockholm, where the photographer Christer Strömholm was head, at the same time as Anders Petersen. After graduation in 1967, he and Petersen co-founded the Saftra photo agency (Saftra Reportage Fotografi).
The Swedish photo magazine Foto published Gustavsson's work in the 1960s. Together with Anders Petersen, Gustavsson portrayed the Stockholm slums in an exhibition at the Stockholm City Museum in 1969. After not working in photography for most of the 1970s, a feature in ETC magazine in 1983 revived Gustavsson's career and he went on to complete assignments in Belfast, Chicago, Reykjavik and New York for ETC. In 1984 he was awarded FOTO magazine’s Photographer’s Price. He died in 2009.

On April 8 is the birthday of

Ida Kar (Ida Karamian, Ида Карамян), Russian-Armenian photographer born in 1908, well known for her portraits of famous artists and writers. 
She spent his childhood between Russia, Armenia, Iran and Egypt. In 1928 she moved to Paris to study chemistry and medicine but soon she sympathized with the Surrealists and become interested in photography. Upon returning to Cairo in 1933 opened a photographic studio and participated in the development of surrealism in Egypt. 
In 1945 she moved to London to participate in the English Surrealist movement so that her work began to spread. In 1954 participated in a group exhibition entitled Forty Artists from Paris and London (Forty artists in Paris and London) and in 1960 she held his first solo exhibition. She died in 1974.

On April 9 is the birthday of

Eadweard James Muybridge (birth name Edward James Muggeridge), English photographer born in 1830, important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion, and early work in motion-picture projection.
He emigrated to the United States as a young man and became a bookseller. He returned to England in 1861 and took up professional photography, learning the wet-plate collodion process, and secured at least two British patents for his inventions. He went back to San Francisco in 1867, and in 1868 his large photographs of Yosemite Valley made him world famous. Today, Muybridge is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion in 1877 and 1878, which used multiple cameras to capture motion in stop-motion photographs, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip used in cinematography. He died in 1904.

On April 10 is the birthday of

Farah Mahbub (Farah Jee), Pakistani Fine Art Photographer and a photography professor.
She was born in 1965 and awarded second prize in category fine art for the entry titled, “Lifelines & Manuscripts 25.” by PX3 - Prix de la Photographie Paris.
Farah Mahbub graduated from P.E.C.H.S. College Karachi with Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987. Farah have been working as a professional photographer since 1988. Over these years she did fine art photography for personal self-expression and freelanced for many publications. She joined Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in 1997 to teach photography.

On April 11 is the birthday of

Dody Weston Thompson, American photographer and chronicler of the history and craft of photography. She learned the art in 1947 and developed her own expression of “straight” or realistic photography, the style that emerged in Northern California in the 1930s. Dody worked closely with contemporary icons Edward Weston (her former father-in-law), Brett Weston (her former husband) and Ansel Adams (as an assistant and a friend) during the late 1940s and through the 1950s, with additional collaboration with Brett Weston in the 1980s.
Dody was invited in 1949 to participate in the photographic organization Group f/64, a bastion of the emerging West Coast Photographic Movement. In 1952, she was co-awarded the prestigious Albert M. Bender Award (known informally in the West as the “Little Guggenheim”) which financed a year's work in photography. Her camera work is represented in dozens of museums and private collections as well as in many photographic books and magazines. She also participated in multiple solo and group exhibitions from 1948 through 2006 in the United States and Japan. She died in 2012.

On April 12 is the birthday of

Antonín Kratochvíl, Czech-born American photojournalist. He is a founding member of the VII Photo Agency. He received his BFA in Photography from Gerrit Rietveld Academie which is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Kratochvil has photographed a wide variety of subjects, including Mongolia's street children for the Museum of Natural History and the war in Iraq for Fortune Magazine. 
He has received numerous grants and awards for his photography, most recently the 2005 Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Photojournalism and the 2005 Golden Light Award for Best Documentary Book.

On April 13 is the birthday of

Carlos Endara Andrade, Ecuadorian photographer born in 1865 who developed his work in Panama, becoming one of the pioneers of photography in that country.
He moved to Panama in 1886 in search of his father who was working on the construction of the Canal and as available studies drawing started working on Universal Inter-Oceanic Canal Company. After meeting French photographer Louis Blanc started in photography and soon became associated with Epifanio Garay founded the photographic studio "Garay-Endara" of Panama in 1888. Between 1899 and 1904 he studied Fine Arts in Paris, specializing in technical photo. 
His photographic work focuses on portraiture but also reflects key aspects of life in his time. 
Collaborated in various magazines and newspapers Panamanians, and became the official photographer of several presidents. He died in 1954.
