Recolección / Compilation (CLIII-1)

Rostros ocultos / Hidden Faces (I-1)

In the times of Coronavirus the use of masks has been imposed. This is not new; since the Spanish flu at the beginning of the century, and even before that, when the doctors of the 17th century treated patients infected by the plague with their pointed masks, the threat in the air has introduced the handicap of the covered half-face into social relations, depersonalizing the individual, making us doubt who we have in front of us, thanks to those prophylactic shields usually reserved for doctors and nurses. In art, the representation of the phenomenon is as old as the very incorporation of these devices into everyday life, and in recent months it has obviously intensified. Based on this idea of Shirley Rebuffo, and with her usual contributions, here you have a selection of works that include facial coverage, so common for a long time in Eastern countries, and so omnipresent in Western countries today.

"Autorretrato / Self Portrait", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 30 x 20 cm., 2020. Saatchi

"My self-portrait is a question about our identity during the coronavirus times, how we adapt, how we see each other. We take more care of ourselves and others around us, we try to live a normal life within our home and from time to time face some struggles, not visiting our parents, our friends, just put a mask on to go grocery shopping."

"David-ITU Nurse", acrílico sobre lienzo / acrylic on canvas, 2020. Link

"David works in a hospital in Sheffield in intensive care. He looks so hot in all that PPE when I was painting him I even noticed the beads of condensation on the inside of the visor. I can't imagine how hard it must be to work a 12 plus hours shift in it. It must be like being wrapped in a bin bag with a Tupperware box on your head.....and yet he is still smiling."

"We will overcome this together, but apart. Or apart, hence together. In these times of necessary social isolation, we need to have faith. Regardless of our geographic location, ethnicity, and religion, we are united in the same prayer: may God inspire scientists to find the solution to this pandemic - and comfort our hearts so that we have the strength and can continue together as humanity."
