Lemuel "Francis" Abbott
(Leicestershire, Inglaterra / England, 1760/61 - Londres / London, 1802)

Lemuel "Francis" Abbott was an English portrait painter born in 1760/61 in Leicestershire.
In 1775, at the age of 14, he became a pupil of Francis Hayman and lived in London, but returned to his parents after his teacher's death in 1776. In 1780, Abbott married Anna Maria, and again settled in London. Although he exhibited at the Royal Academy, he never became an Academician. It is said that overwork, due to the commissions he took on, and domestic unhappiness led to his becoming insane.
Abbott painted portraits of many figures of the day including leading seamen such as Admiral Nelson and many others. Some of his paintings were signed "Francis Lemuel Abbott", but it is not known why he assumed the additional Christian name, as it was not one with which he was baptised.
He died in London in 1802.

George Arnald
(Farndip [hoy / today Farndish], Northamptonshire [hoy / today Bedfordshire],
o / or Berkshire, Inglaterra / England, 1763 /
Pentonville, Londres / London, 1841)

George Arnald was a British painter born in 1763 who specialised in landscapes, including topographical views to illustrated county histories.
There is little information about Arnald's early years, but it is believed that he began his working life as a domestic servant before turning to the study of art. He was a student of the landscape painter and engraver William Pether (c. 1738–1821).
Arnald first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1788, and eventually had 176 works exhibited there. He also exhibited 63 works at the British Institution. He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy, but was never admitted to full membership.
Probably his best-known and most acclaimed work was a departure from his usual subject-matter. The Destruction of L'Orient at the Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798 is Arnald's only known maritime work.
In addition to providing illustrations for a number of books, Arnald published on his own an album of views on the River Meuse in 1828.
He died in 1841.

Giotto di Bondone
(Colle di Vespignano, República de Florencia [hoy Italia] /
Republic of Florence [today Italy]c.1267 -
Firenze / Florencia / Florence1337)

Giotto di Bondone (Giotto, Latinised as Giottus) was an Italian painter and architect from Florence born c.1267, during the Late Middle Ages. He worked during the Gothic/Proto-Renaissance period.
In his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, Giorgio Vasari described Giotto as making a decisive break with the prevalent Byzantine style and as initiating "the great art of painting as we know it today, introducing the technique of drawing accurately from life, which had been neglected for more than two hundred years".
Giotto's masterwork is the decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel, in Padua, also known as the Arena Chapel, which was completed around 1305. The fresco cycle depicts the Life of the Virgin and the Life of Christ. It is regarded as one of the supreme masterpieces of the Early Renaissance. That Giotto painted the Arena Chapel and was chosen by the Commune of Florence in 1334 to design the new campanile (bell tower) of the Florence Cathedral are among the few certainties about his life. Almost every other aspect of it is subject to controversy: his birth date, his birthplace, his appearance, his apprenticeship, the order in which he created his works, whether or not he painted the famous frescoes in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi and his burial place.
He died in 1337.

Cimabue (Cenni di Pepo)
Bencivieni di Pepo o / or Benvenuto di Giuseppe
(República de Florencia [hoy Italia] /
Republic of Florence [today Italy], c. 1240 - Pisa, 1302)

Cimabue, also known as Cenni di Pepo or di Pepi was an Italian painter and designer of mosaics born Florence c.1240.
Although heavily influenced by Byzantine models, Cimabue is generally regarded as one of the first great Italian painters to break from the Italo-Byzantine style. While medieval art then was scenes and forms that appeared relatively flat and highly stylized, Cimabue's figures were depicted with more advanced lifelike proportions and shading than other artists of his time. According to Italian painter and historian Giorgio Vasari, Cimabue was the teacher of Giotto, the first great artist of the Italian Proto-Renaissance. However, many scholars today tend to discount Vasari's claim by citing earlier sources that suggest otherwise.
He died in 1302.

Louis Boulanger
(Vercelli, Francia / France, 1806 - Dijon, 1867)

Louis Boulanger was a French Romantic painter, lithographer and illustrator, born in Vercelli in 1806.
He enrolled in 1821 at the École des beaux-arts where he attended the workshop of Guillaume Guillon Lethière and received a solid classical training. He made a présentation for the Prix de Rome, in 1824. He became the companion of Eugène Devéria and an intimate of Victor Hugo as well as different Parisian Romantic circles, which had a decisive effect on his career.
He saw great success at the Salon of 1827 thanks to his Supplice de Mazeppa, was awarded a medal on the occasion of a special salon for the new school, which also showed La Naissance d'Henri IV by Eugène Devéria and La Mort de Sardanapale by Delacroix. However, this success did not continue in the young painter's career. He painted the portrait of several personalities of the era, including the most famous example, Balzac in a monk's robe, now at the musée des beaux-arts in Tours. Several of Boulanger's works are held at the maison Victor Hugo in place des Vosges, Paris.
He was illustrator of several Romantic works of Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas, as well as a series of strange lithographs on fantastical themes customarily attached to the frenetic vein which certain artists exploited in this period. La Ronde du Sabbat by Louis Boulanger is the only icon of this poorly studied tendency.
He died in 1867.

Auguste-Barthélemy Glaize was a French Romantic painter of history paintings and genre paintings, born in 1807 in Montpellier.
He studied under the painters Achille Devéria and Eugène Devéria and taught Paul-Maurice Duthoit and his son Pierre-Paul-Léon Glaize.
He was one of the great French Romantic painters of the early 19th century, marking his career with important history paintings and cycles of monumental religious paintings in several churches in Paris and the provinces. He was most well known for painting beautiful mythological or historical scenes, often containing nude females and the humanity he portrayed in his subjects faces. The painting conserved in the church at Quesnoy-sur-Airaines is considered one of his masterworks.
The sometimes anti-establishment themes in his paintings, earned criticism from religious leaders at the time. For example, while praising the beauty and originality of his painting Alfred Des Essarts criticised what he saw as a 'profane' way to treat religious subjects. This was typical of religious criticism of romantic art at the time.
He died in 1893.
