Tom Palmore (II) [Pintura, Dibujo / Painting, Drawing]

This is the second of three posts (1, 3) that I dedicate to the American painter and draftsman Tom Palmore, whose animal portraits seem to have been commissioned from his models. Along with the usual biographical review posted in the first part, I accompany this selection of images with some texts by the artist about his work.

Tom Palmore

Tom Palmore is an American painter born in 1945 in Ada, Oklahoma.
For more than 35 years, Tom Palmore has painted animal portraits with a reverence for his subject and a masterful technical prowess. His ultra-real portraits of animals in oil and acrylic offer a unique and often comical juxtaposition of technical literalism and surreal, imaginative context.

«When I first started painting, I didn’t want to do paintings of animals like any other paintings that I’d seen before.  And I didn’t want to be limited by their natural environment.»

«One of the things that makes my work different from other painters is that most of my work has a sense of wit and humor, which is emphasized with a juxtaposition in the background,... For example, a portrait of a frog with bug wallpaper. That’s humorous as well as unexpected.»

"Colibrí bailarín / Hummingbird Dancer"

«When I do a show, I do everything from, you know, kiwis to elephants, all from my point of view. A lot of the things that I do you could actually physically see. In other words, you actually could see a gorilla walk through a formal garden. It’s physically possible for that to happen; it’s highly unlikely that you would ever see it.»

"Azulillo sietecolores / Painted Bunting"

«I never paint animals when they’re looking angry, showing their teeth, looking vicious, depressed, whatever. I always try to show them in their best light and try to enhance them. And I don’t make fun of them by putting hats and clothing and stuff on them. I don’t have them shooting pool or bowling.
I try to approach the painting as if the animal commissioned me to do the painting.»

"La rara abubilla australiana / Rare Australian Hoopoe"

«Even when I put an animal in a natural setting, I try to make it my own through unusual lighting, unique compositions, or atypical points of view.»

«From the very beginning I have distinct and detailed images in my head. But the painting will evolve, moving from the original idea as I envisioned it.»
