Jo Schwab es un fotógrafo alemán nacido en 1969 en una pequeña ciudad cerca de Frankfurt. Estudió en la State Academy of Photograpy en Münich, y actualmente vive y trabaja en Berlín.

Es un artista ampliamente reconocido en el mundo de la fotografía fundamentalmente por sus retratos de desnudos. Son imágenes puras, directas y sin artificios. Un fondo neutro y un modelo de torso o cuerpo entero exhibiendo su autenticidad ante la cámara de un fotógrafo lo bastante hábil como para captarla.

"Tenía 14 años cuando vi la película "Apocalypse Now", y mi tío me regaló una vieja cámara Nikon F2 que había pertenecido a mi abuelo. Instantáneamente mi vida cambió y decidí que quería ser un fotógrafo descontrolado como Dennis Hoppero. Nunca más se me ocurrió plantearme hacer otra cosa."

"Honestamente, no me preocupa demasiado la parte técnica de la fotografía. Tú puedes hacer las mejores imágenes con la cámara más modesta y las peores con equipamiento de 100.000 dólares. Pero trabajar con analógico tiene algo mucho más sensual. Todo el proceso de trabajo analógico te exige una manera de trabajar mucho más elaborada y sofisticada. Por lo general me gusta trabajar con formatos medios y cámaras analógicas, mayormente como mi vieja Mamiya RZ67, pero por supuesto también utilizo cámaras digitales."

"Sólo puedo obtener lo que busco cuando hay una especie de intimidad y confianza entre la persona que está frente a mi cámara y yo mismo. Creo que es una de las cosas más esenciales. Para que pueda llegar a ellos, a sus expresiones, así ellos se sienten libres de expresar algo que es como yo lo siento.

Esa es también la razón por la cual por lo general prefiero trabajar solo, sin una masa de gente como asistentes, maquilladores, etc., a mi alrededor. Mi tarea básica como fotógrafo es dejar que mis modelos se sientan seguros y cómodos.

Los encuentro en cualquier sitio, o ellos me encuentran a mí. En realidad no sé quiénes son. Creo que una imagen fotográfica en sí misma es siempre algo superficial y no tiene el poder de mostrar algo objetivo respecto a la personalidad de alguien. Puedo hacer cosas para enfatizar lo que quiero mostrar, pero al final todo depende siempre del ojo del observador y su interpretación subjetiva. No creo que haya algo que "comparezca" en sí mismo en una fotografía. Es redibujar, es algo que estoy diciendo, como fotógrafo."

Jo Schwab is a German photographer born 1969 in a small town near Frankfurt. He studied at the State Academy of Photograpy in Munich, and now lives and works in Berlin.

It is a widely recognized artist in the world of photography primarily for his portraits of nudes. These images are pure, direct and without artifice. A neutral background and a model of torso or full body exhibiting their authenticity in front of the camera of a photographer skillful enough to catch it.

"I was about 14 years old, when I saw the movie „Apocalypse Now“ and my uncle gave me the old nikon f2 camera which belonged to  my grandfather. Instantaneously my life changed and I decided that I wanted to  become a freaked out photographer like Dennis Hopper. Never again did I consider doing anything else."

"Honestly I don`t care much about the technical part of photography. You can make the best images with the poorest camera and the worst images with a 100.000$ equipment. But working analog has something much more sensual. The whole analog workflow forces you to a much more elaborate and sophisticated way of working. In general I like to work with medium format analog cameras, mostly with my old Mamiya RZ67 but of course I also use digital cameras."

"I can only get what I want when there is a sort of intimacy and confidence between me and the person in front of my camera. I think this is one of the most essential things. So that I can get to them, to the expression they make, so that they are free to do or express something which is the way I feel.

This is also the reason why I mostly prefer working alone, without a throng of people like assistants, makeup-artist etc. around me. My first basic task as a photographer is to let my models feel save and comfortable.

I find them anywhere or they find me. I don`t really know who they are. I believe that a photographic image in itself is always something superficial and has not the ability to show something objective about someone's personality. I can do things to emphazise what I want to show but in the end it`s always up to the beholder and his subjective interpretation. I do not believe that something 'reports' itself in a photograph. It is redrawn; it is something I am saying, as a photographer."
