Tyson Grumm nació en Newcastle, Wyoming, USA, en 1972. Estudió en la Universidad del Sur de Oregon, donde obtuvo su Bachiller en Bellas Artes en 1996. Las imágenes congeladas de Grumm capturan un mundo donde las únicas pistas sobre el pasado y el futuro pueden deducirse de las figuras situadas en entornos fantásticos. Consecuentemente, cada trabajo revela una historia que sólo es contada parcialmente, permitiendo a cada espectador contribuir con su propia única historia para completar cada trabajo. Sus pinturas nos invitan a entrar a un a menudo nostálgico mundo único y con una imaginativa imaginería.

El proceso no sólo es muy interesante en la creación como artista, sino en cuanto permite que se desarrollen historias inesperadas. La finalización de la pintura se decide, una vez más, a un nivel algo así como conceptual. El color y la composición son a menudo analizados desde un punto de vista abstracto (¿Cómo se mueve tu vista sobre la pintura? ¿Cómo los colores y patrones interactúan unos con otros?). Ésta perspectiva, en conjunción con la historia que se está contando, deben coincidir en crear una imaginería que no sólo debe captar la atención del ojo que observa, sino también hacer que no decaiga la energía creativa que encarna."

Creados enteramente en la mente del artista, éstos coloridos e imaginativos trabajos yuxtaponen elementos aparentemente incongruentes como humanos, animales salvajes y caprichosos contextos dentro de cada cuadro, dando como resultado un mundo extraño donde todo está patas arriba. Grumm ha exhibido ampliamente en Estados Unidos y recientemente ha hecho su primera muestra en Londres con gran éxito. Sus trabajos pueden encontrarse en muchas colecciones públicas y privadas de Europa y USA.

Tyson Grumm was born in Newcastle, Wyoming, USA in 1972. He studied at the Southern Oregon University where he received his Bachelors in Fine Art in 1996. Grumm’s freeze-framed images capture a world where the only clues to the past and the future can be derived from the figures located within fantastic surroundings. Consequently, each work reveals a story that is only partially told, enabling each viewer to contribute their own unique story to the completion of each of Grumm’s works. His paintings invite us into a unique and often at times, nostalgic world of imaginative imagery.

The artist relies on common objects from his surroundings to provide a certain degree of familiarity in his work. The objects appear to him as he begins painting and then, if by chance they begin to work themselves into his composition. His figures appear to be both characters and caricatures, distinctive and unusual, often with historical significance. Created entirely in the mind of the artist, these colorful and imaginative works juxtapose seemingly incongruous elements, such as humans, wild animals, and whimsical back drops within each frame, resulting in a bizarre world where everything is topsy-turvy. Grumm has exhibited widely throughout the USA and his first London solo show this year was a great success. His works can be found in many private and public collections in Europe and the USA.

"I start each piece building the background and environment, without any preconceived composition. The progression is very abstract in its stages, even though I am painting realistic objects and scenes. The purposeful act of letting the painting dictate its own path is a key component to the unique stories that unravel. The process is not only very interesting to create as an artist, but allows unexpected tales to unfold. The painting’s completion is once again decided on a somewhat conceptual level. Color and composition are often analyzed from an abstract point of view (how does your eye move around the painting? How do the colors and patterns interact with each other?). This perspective, in conjunction with the story being told must come together creating imagery that will not only be eye catching but never wither of the imaginative energy that incarnated it."

James Abbott McNeill Whistler fue un artista estadounidense de nacimiento, radicado en Gran Bretaña. Más información en los demás posts y en Wikpedia.
Anna McNeill Whistler posó para la pintura mientras vivía en Londres con su hijo. Hay varias historias no verificadas que rodean la creación de la pintura; una es que Anna Whistler reemplazó a otra modelo que no pudo asistir a la cita. Otra es que Whistler originalmente concibió la idea para la pintura con la modelo de pie, pero su madre estaba tan incómoda posando así durante un período tan largo.
El trabajo fue presentado en la 104ª Muestra de la Royal Academy of Art en Londres (1872), pero estuvo a un pelo de ser rechazado por la Academia. It is also said that Whistler originally envisioned painting the model standing up, but that his mother was too uncomfortable to pose standing for an extended period.
