Michael Talbot [Escultura]

In the stylized sculptures by the British artist Michael Talbot, hard and cold bronze becomes figures of a subtle and ethereal lightness. They are, as he says, "theatrical constructions" in which dancers or characters inspired by mythology amusingly choreograph a moment that the artist frozen in time and space. From the clay model to final patinated bronze, those moments are captured in delicate metal structures full of grace and harmony.

Estudió más tarde en la Sir Henry Doulton Sculpture School con Colin Melbourne y Dame Elizabeth Frink.

"El retorno de Briseida / Briseis Returns"
Bronce con pátina química / bronze with chemical patination, altura / height: 144 cm.

bronze with chemical patination on granite base, alto / height, 143 cm.

Inspired by the ancient love story of Briseis and Achilles. In Greek mythology Briseis, was a princess of Lyrnessus. When Achilles led the assault on that city during the Trojan War Briseis was captured and given to Achilles as a war prize to be his concubine. Despite being held in slavery to Achilles the pair fell in love and they were both heartbroken when Briseis was taken from Achilles by King Agamemnon.

Sculpture inspired by the Greek Goddes Ariadne,  said by the ancient Celts to have spun the universe from the primordial darkness the way a spider spins her web. In Greek mythology she was said to have danced the spiral dance to the centre of the Labyrinth where the monster lies in wait, while weaving her thread of magic. Michael has fused both mythological concepts to create this beautiful bewitching creature. She represents that inner self we all seek in our path to enlightenment, coming to terms with our darker selves and facing our “monsters” within.

«Sculpture for me, is essentially a theatrical construction, an attempt to show and illuminate a chosen moment in time. I draw my creative inspiration from theatre, myth, dance and illusion. The inspiration for the Briseis and Ariadne sculptures were taken from plumes of water in a night-lit fountain which, with the distortion of the mind’s eye, figures appeared in the tumbling crest of a column of liquid energy. This, I have tried to capture in bronze, through the lost wax process, a technique from Ancient Greece, to render a timeless human narrative from the Myth of Greece. I like to give my sculptures choreography of form, tension and balance to lead the eye and capture a moment in time, sometimes I work with the fragment form rather than an entire figure (like Harlequin and Veil). This is a favourite artistic device often inspired by shadows of the model on the studio wall – because less is sometimes more.»

Michael has a fascination for Venice and the Venetian tradition of masquerade. Historically, masquerading was a shared practice among Venetians, and the wearing of masks allowed people to engage in all manner of uninhibited celebration with anonymity, allowing them to reveal their true persona, without fear of being judged.

«I work from the live model in my pursuit of a particular momentary form or gesture. This I contrast with the absolute nature of bronze. It is what remains when time sweeps all else away. When we gaze into the face of an ancient bronze in a museum, what reaches out across the millennia of time is not how different, but how like us they were.»

"Mascarada / Masquerade"

The work is inspired by the Sirens of Greek mythology, the sea nymphs that lived on the island Sirenum Scopuli, who drew sailors to the rocks by their enchanted singing, causing their ships to sink.
The unusual variegated patination on this piece represents the water cascading from the skin of the Nymph as she rises from the sea. Michael gave her the name Opal because the patination effect appears like raw unpolished opal and implies an intriguing and colourful depth behind the beautiful but course exterior.
