«I spent the first twenty years of my life here in Lopez and it was a great place to grow up.
I started to blow glass when I was 16 years old. I had the opportunity to work with my good friend and mentor Lark Dalton through an alternative high school program. At the time it was kind of an escape from Academia, but as soon as I got into it, it was clear that that's what I wanted to do. Once I started doing it I can't stop doing it. At first I just was working a few techniques so I was making functional pieces - cups, bowls, plates - in the traditional Venetian style glass. As I evolved the medium of glass really lent itself quite well what I wanted to do sculpturaly, so once I started making sculptural work and really find my own voice and my own art form it's been almost fourteen years now of following that passion for the medium of glass.»

«I really like making the work because the process is so intriguing... Wasn't that I choose the media and so much is it choose me maybe. Growing up here it's been a huge influence on my work.»

"De regreso / Homeward" (Ballena jorobada / Humpback Whale)

«Growing up in the Pacific Northwest on a small island translated into ample time on and around the water. Some of my most memorable moments in life are those of having my first salmon on the line, or a humpback whale feeding off the bow of my kayak. These unforgettable experiences dictate the work I make today.»

«Once I started working sculpturally in glass, that's where I really found my voice. Most of the animals that I make are aquatic or marine mammals. I think that mammals are something that we as humans identify with because we are also mammals.»

«One of the hardest things is proportion and getting everything to look like in the right place. That's one hard aspect, but the other and I think one of the more difficult things about making something is giving it a dynamic flow and making it look alive, and giving it motion when it's a static object.»

«The coloring of the bubble is a big part of what goes into it so it's been a long time as far as the process of figuring out which colors go where and what works well together. Some things I try to be a little more whimsical with and do a looser interpretation so I definitely spent a lot of time developing which colors work well together.»

«I love the productive that I make, but a huge aspect of why I do what I do is the process, and a huge aspect of that process is the team. The nature of glass blowing is a team work. You cannot make anything even a small thing by yourself. I just feel very fortunate living in the Seattle area where there's so much talent in the glass field.»

"Ataque / Strike" (Marlin)

«I feel that is important as an artist not limit yourself. Glass is the main media in that I work in but I think that just creating is where the satisfaction comes from, whether is drawing or sculpting something you get the same gratification. I revisit similar forms and the forms became more graceful. I'm maybe able to distill the essence of the form a little more the work also evolves and I try new things that I haven't tried before, or I try old forms in a new way. I can not see the evolution just continuing into the future, I don't really know where will take me but I think that is going in a good direction and I just continue to follow that.»

"Cazadora / Huntress" (León marino de Steller / Stellar Sea Lion)

«I hope to try to... not only make something beautiful that is nice to look at but bring people's awareness to this creatures that share our planet and our environment with us, open people's eyes a little bit to the beauty that is right there in there own backyard, maybe also the fragility of the ecosystems that they live in. We take what the ocean gives as a limitless supply of food or a place where we can leave our trash or dump our toxins. Is easy to be negative about that but I just hope that the beauty of the creatures helps rise some sort of awareness or bring people's attention to that aspect.»

Kelly trabajando / at work
