On September 24 is the birthday of

Raimo Utriainen, Finnish sculptor born in 1927 in Kuopio.
He was the innovative spirit of modernism in Finnish sculpture. With some forty major public works to his name, he was the most successful and international monumental sculptor of his generation in this country.
By nature outspoken and unconventional, Utriainen became a controversial figure. From his student years onwards, his passion for world art led him to travel extensively. Long before his first solo exhibition in Finland at the Helsinki Artek Gallery in 1974, he had made public works also outside the country, in Occupied Palestine, Norway and Sweden, and acquired an international reputation.

Raimo Utriainen modernised Finnish sculpture both aesthetically and technically. Although he began his career using the traditional methods, by the early 1970s he had gone over to using industrial materials and means. His highly original sculptures consisted of aluminium or stainless steel slats assembled around vertical or horizontal axles. His works gradually progressed towards complete simplicity and tranquility.

On September 25 is the birthday of

Lavinia Ellen "Vinnie" Ream Hoxie, American sculptor born in 1847 in Madison, Wisconsin.
She attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri, now known as Columbia College.
In 1861, her family moved to Washington, D.C. After her father's health began to fail, she began working outside the home to support her family. Vinnie Ream was one of the first women to be employed by the federal government, as a clerk in the dead letter office of the United States Post Office from 1862 to 1866 during the American Civil War. She sang at the E Street Baptist Church, and for the wounded at Washington, D.C. hospitals.

In 1863, James S. Rollins introduced Ream to sculptor Clark Mills. She became an apprentice in Mills's sculpting studio the next year, at the age of seventeen. In 1864, President Lincoln agreed to model for her in the morning for five months, and she created a bust of his figure. During this time, Ream also began intense public relations efforts, selling photographs of herself and soliciting newspaper attention as a marketing strategy.
Vinnie Ream was the youngest artist and first woman to receive a commission as an artist from the United States government for a statue. She was awarded the commission for the full-size Carrara marble statue of Lincoln by a vote of Congress on July 28, 1866, when she was 18 years old. She had used her previous bust of Lincoln as her entry into the selection contest for the full-size sculpture. There was significant debate over her selection as the sculptor, however, because of concern over her inexperience and the slanderous accusations that she was a "lobbyist", or a public woman of questionable reputation. She was notorious for her beauty and her conversational skills, which likely contributed to these accusations. She worked in a studio in Room A of the basement of the Capitol.

Once the U.S. government had approved the plaster model, Ream traveled to Paris, Munich, Florence, then Rome, to produce a finished marble figure. She studied with Léon Bonnat in Paris, also producing busts of Gustave Doré, Père Hyacynthe, Franz Liszt, and Giacomo Antonelli.
Her marbles, America, The West, and Miriam, were exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Ream designed the first free-standing statue of a Native American, Sequoyah, to be placed in Statuary Hall at the Capitol.
She died in 1914.

On September 27 is the birthday of

Alexander Ney (Александр Ней) (born Alexander Udino-Nezhdanov, Александр Удино-Нежданов), American sculptor and painter born in 1939 in Leningrad (today St. Petersburg), Soviet Union, He immigrated to the United States in 1974. Developing several individualistic styles in modern art, he is most famous for his unique work in terra cotta sculpture, involving heavily perforated surfaces and intriguing forms.
After being given private art lessons at the home of influential Russian sculptor V.V. Lishev (1877-1960), from 1954 to 1957 Ney studied at the Art School of the Leningrad Academy of Arts, and later at the Art School of the Surikov Moscow Art Institute from 1957 to 1959. Ney befriended a wide number of progressive-minded art students, now stars of the contemporary Russian art scene.

From 1965 to 1967, Ney taught sculpture to children at the House of Young Pioneers in Leningrad. Students included future Russian novelist Sergei Dovlatov (1941–1990)
In 1967 through 1969, Ney attended art history and theory courses at the Ilya Repin Institute. He continued to perfect his skills as both a painter and sculptor, as well as an art theoretician.
Due to his highly productive creative output's clashing with the Soviet mandates of Socialist Realism, Ney absconded to France in 1972 on a tourist visa, as immigration was not permitted. His was granted residencies and established studios in the famed art colonies of both Cité internationale des Arts in Paris and Villa Arson in Nice. In 1974, at the encouragement of American Abstract Expressionist painter Elaine de Kooning (wife of Willem), he immigrated with his family to the United States.

One of the first of several noted cultural figures whose early departure inadvertently signaled the start of a new wave of American immigrants from the Soviet Union, the legendary late American designer Gene Moore discovered Ney's work at a chance meeting at The Russian Tea Room. As the longtime Vice President of the flagship landmark location of Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, having displayed the works of contemporary artists Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol, Moore created displays featuring Ney's works annually since 1978 for over thirty years.
On May 29, 1997, a 4-alarm rooftop fire apparently caused by a neighboring commercial building descended into Ney's two-floor home and studio located in Manhattan's Diamond District, destroying thousands of artwork.

The Art Stack

On September 28 is the birthday of

Mirko Basaldella, Italian sculptor and painter born in 1910 in Udine.
He studied at the artistic Lyceum of Venice, at the Accademia in Florence and at the Scuola dell'arte de Monza. He worked in the studio of Arturo Martini as a student until 1933, then moved to Rome. There he met the artists of the Roman school such as Scipione, Corrado Cagli (with whose sister Serena he got married), Antonietta Raphaël, Fazzini, Mazzacurati and Leoncillo.
He made his first exhibition in 1935 in the Galleria La Cometa, a gallery owned by the Countess Mimi Pecci Blunt, and in which were the artistic directors Libero de Libero and a very young Corrado Cagli. A trip to Paris, completed in 1937 along with his brother Afro, opened him to a more complete vision of art outside the confines of Mediterranean culture, absorbing European culture.
In 1935 he settled in Rome and joined the Milano group of Corrente. In New York, at Knoedler Gallery in 1947, he made an exhibition that he repeated in the following two years.
Between 1949 and 1951 he built the three doors of Fosse Ardeatine, an imposing bronze sculpture. This important experience led Basaldella to search for a new way of making sculptures, with structures and materials different from those traditionally used, such as concrete, metal mesh, iron wires and plastic materials.

"Quimera / Chimera", bronce / bronze, 84 x 73 x 37 cm.,1954.

In the following years there were many visits to the oriental culture, mythical iconology, totems, Assyrians, Mesopotamians, Hebrews and pre-Columbian findings. The period from 1953 to 1960 was characterized by the use of cut copper and brass sheets. Of that period are the series of the Lions of Damascus and the Chimeras.
In 1957 he was appointed director of the design workshops at the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His sculpture was oriented towards technological, mechanical and fantastic stimulation directions of the sacred crafts of the Indians of America; Certain sculptural themes are reported in archaeological forms.
In 1962 he participated, together with the most important international sculptors of the time, in the exhibition "Sculpture in the city" organized by Giovanni Carandente as part of the V Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. He presented two bronze sculptures from 1961: "Totem" and "Motive Dentate".
In the second half of the sixties he devoted himself to a new series of painted wood. The latest bronzes were born from the ability of the sculptor to shape all kinds of materials, from trash to brick and industrial packaging waste materials. Finally, the expressively figurative themes reappear inspired by biblical themes of the thirties, full of refined cultural memories.
He died in 1969.
