Anna Halldin Maule is an exceptionally talented painter born in Sweden in 1972. She married Tom, born in Hawaii in 1970, and they moved there in 2002.
Together they form a unique partnership of love and creativity.

Although Halldin Maule uses professional models as subjects, each painting can be read as a psychological self-portrait. She admits that she succumbs to the temptation of glamour along with the rest of us, stating, “Women of today are assaulted by a continuous stream of media bytes dictating how we should look, think, and purchase. My latest paintings are part of my ‘Persona’ series and through them I explore the ‘masks’ women wear in their quest to discover their true selves.”

«I met my husband in my native Sweden in 2001. After 9/11 we decided to move to Tom’s home of Hawaii, and focus on art full time. He is a photographer and we work together to create the reference photos for my paintings. I have always been painting, but meeting Tom was the kick in the butt I needed to get started for real. I quit my job, left my family and friends and moved to Hawaii to pursue my love for art. It was the best decision I ever made. Always follow your passion and wonderful things will happen to you.»

«I paint in thin layers of oil, it’s called glazing. Layers upon layers of paint and medium. It’s very time consuming but it’s so beautiful the way it makes the paint glow.»
«These paintings can take me months to paint and they become so much a part of me. Typically I’ll spend 6 days a week, 8 hours a day painting. When you’re spending this much time with any one painting you really get attached.»

In these paintings, the beauty of her sitters is truncated by jewels and "masks" that intrude onto the image. The eccentricity of the accoutrements -- a headdress composed of cotton, a gilded birdcage -- points to their obsolescence. In several paintings, the model's adornments or the cropping of the image act as literal masks, preventing the viewer from seeing the subject's face. The message is that efforts to "make up" our identity often result in the loss of it.
