On August 18 is the birthday of

Guglielmo Plüschow, German photographer born in 1852, who moved to Italy and became known for his nude photos of local youths, predominantly males. Being the cousin of Wilhelm von Gloeden, who, despite taking up nude photography later than Plüschow, soon overshadowed him, Plüschow was several times at odds with the law and charged with corruption of minors. Today, his photography is recognized for its artistic merits, even though it is generally considered somewhat inferior to von Gloeden's on account of his less graceful handling of lighting and the sometimes strangely stilted poses of his models.
One of Plüschow's more famous models was Vincenzo Galdi, who was probably one of Plüschow's lovers. Galdi later became a photographer in his own right, as well as an art gallery owner.
He died in 1930.

On August 19 is the birthday of

Mariano Díaz Bravo, Chilean-born (1929) Venezuelan photographer, graphic designer and writer, best known for his contributions to the study and promotion of Venezuelan folk art. In 1993, he received the Premio Nacional de Arte Popular "Aquiles Nazoa" (Popular Culture National Prize), Venezuela's highest honor for folk artists and folk art promoters.
From 1954 to 1960, Díaz worked as a graphic designer for the University of Chile's Experimental Theater Department. Then, in 1960 he moved to Caracas, Venezuela, invited by the Universidad Central de Venezuela. In Venezuela he worked as a photojournalist, graphic designer and writer for several Venezuelan newspapers and magazines, including La Esfera, El Mundo, La República, and El Nacional. He was Director of Publications for the Universidad de Oriente, Director of Art and Publications Advisor for the President´s Central Information Office and Publications Coordinator for CVF. Since 1978, Díaz has exclusively worked as a free-lance writer and graphic designer.

On August 20 is the birthday of

Bernhard "Bernd" Becher, German artist born in 1931, worked as a collaborative duo with Hilla Becher. They are best known for their extensive series of photographic images, or typologies, of industrial buildings and structures.
He studied painting at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart from 1953 to 1956, then typography under Karl Rössing at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie from 1959 to 1961.
Meeting as painting students at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1957, Bernd and Hilla Becher first collaborated on photographing and documenting the disappearing German industrial architecture in 1959. The couple married in 1961.
In drawing attention to the cultural dimension of industrial architecture, their work also highlighted the need for preservation of these buildings.
Bernd died in 2007.

On August 21 is the birthday of

Gabriel Carvajal, Colombian photographer born in 1916.
He began practicing photographer when he woke the fans for the new art in the year 1942. With his Vantam camera, acquired by thirty pesos, he devoted himself to photographing landscapes, street scenes and all that attracted him visually. His first amateur photography as photojournalist was made in 1945, in the Plaza de Cisneros, in a protest march for the decentralization of Antioquia.
With the Master Leo Matiz, Colombian photographer, illustrated the book Medellín industrial capital of Colombia, published in 1947. Later in 1949, with Fen Duperly set about touring the country, some 15,000 miles by land, to photograph the natural beauty. The tour lasted three months, in which they did a thousand photographs were then used in publications and calendars for Fabricato and Pantex.
He died in 2008.

On August 22 is the birthday of

Helene Bertha Amalie "Leni" Riefenstahl, German film director, producer, screenwriter, editor, photographer, actress and dancer born in 1902, widely known for directing the Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will. Riefenstahl’s prominence in the Third Reich, along with her personal association with Adolf Hitler, destroyed her film career following Germany's defeat in World War II, after which she was arrested but released without any charges.
Triumph of the Will gave Riefenstahl instant and lasting international fame, as well as infamy. She directed eight films, two of which received significant coverage outside Germany. The propaganda value of her films made during the 1930s repels most modern commentators, but many film histories cite the aesthetics as outstanding. The Economist wrote that Triumph of the Will "sealed her reputation as the greatest female filmmaker of the 20th century".
After her death, the Associated Press described Riefenstahl as an “acclaimed pioneer of film and photographic techniques”.
She died in 2003.

On August 23 is the birthday of

Hector Garcia Cobo, Mexican photographer/photojournalist born in 1923, who had a sixty year career chronicling Mexico’s social classes, Mexico City and various events of the 20th century, such as the 1968 student uprising. He was born poor but discovered photography in his teens and early 20’s, deciding to study it seriously after his attempt to photograph the death of a coworker failed. He was sent to the Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas by magazine director Edmundo Valdés who recognized García’s talent. Most of García's career was related to photojournalism, working with publications both inside and outside of Mexico. However, a substantial amount of his work had more artistic and critical qualities. Many of these were exhibited in galleries and museums, with sixty five individual exhibitions during his lifetime. This not only included portraits of artists and intellectuals (including a famous portrait of David Alfaro Siqueiros at Lecumberri Prison) but also portraits of common and poor people. He was also the first photojournalist to explicitly criticize Mexico’s elite, either making fun of them or contrasting them to the very poor.
He died in 2012.

Today, August 24, is the birthday of

Lennart Nilsson, Swedish photographer and scientist born in 1922. He is noted for his photographs of in vivo human embryos and other medical subjects once considered unphotographable, and more generally for his extreme macro photography. He is also considered to be among Sweden’s first modern photojournalists.
He began his professional career in the mid-1940s as a freelance photographer, working frequently for the publisher Åhlen & Åkerlund of Stockholm. One of his earliest assignments was covering the liberation of Norway in 1945 during World War II. Some of his early photo essays, brought him international attention after publication in Life, Illustrated, Picture Post, and elsewhere.
In the mid-1950s he began experimenting with new photographic techniques to make extreme close-up photographs. These advances, combined with very thin endoscopes that became available in the mid-1960s, enabled him to make groundbreaking photographs of living human blood vessels and body cavities. He achieved international fame in 1965, when his photographs of the beginning of human life appeared on the cover and on sixteen pages of Life magazine.

* Lennart Nilsson died on January 28th, 2017
