For a brief time John Varley was employed by a portrait painter in Holborn and then, at the age of 15 or 16, he became a pupil of Joseph Charles Barrow, who had an evening drawing school twice a week. It was Barrow who took Varley on a sketching tour to Peterborough from which he emerged as a professional painter. In 1798 he exhibited a highly regarded sketch of Peterborough Cathedral at the Royal Academy and became a regular exhibitor at the RA until the foundation of the Old Watercolour Society in 1805.
He died in 1842.

From 1685 to 1708 he worked for Ranuccio II and Francisco Farnese in Parma, from 1687 as a painter and, since 1697, as an architect. In 1708 he moved to Barcelona to monitor the events of the wedding of Charles VI of Austria, the pretender to the Spanish throne. Then he returned to Parma in 1711.
In 1717, due to an eye disease, he returned to Bologna, where he completed projects for the observatory of the Institute of Sciences, the main staircase of the Palazzo Malvezzi, the ballroom of the Palazzo Ranuzzi, etc. He died in 1743.

René Victor Auberjonois, Swiss Post-Impressionist painter born in 1872, one of the leading Swiss artists of the 20th century.
After dabbling in caricature and music during a first trip to England, he decided to become a painter and enrolled in the Kensington School of Art. In 1896, he moved to Paris to study with Luc-Olivier Merson and at the École des Beaux-Arts. His budding French career was noted in Switzerland, and after the turn of the century, he made the acquaintance of fellow painter Ferdinand Hodler, conductor Ernest Ansermet and writer Charles Ferdinand Ramuz.
After beginning his career in France as a Realist, Auberjonois began to employ Post-Impressionist techniques after 1903. His subject matter was mostly that of his native Vaud, such as natural landscapes, bathing women or rustic still lifes. In the early 1930s, his paintings became progressively simpler in an Expressionist style close to that of Modigliani.

A fellow pupil to Ferdinand Bol, Nicolaes Maes and Govert Flinck, be regarded as inferior to them in skill and experience; he soon assumed Rembrandt's manner with such success that his pictures were confused with those of his master.
Eeckhout does not merely copy the subjects; he also takes the shapes, the figures, the Jewish dress and the pictorial effects of his master. It is difficult to form an exact judgment of Eeckhout's qualities at the outset of his career. His earliest pieces are probably those in which he more faithfully reproduced Rembrandt's peculiarities. Exclusively his is a tinge of green in shadows marring the harmony of the work, a gaudiness of jarring tints, uniform surface and a touch more quick than subtle.
