On April 24 is the birthday of

André Bauchant, French 'naïve' painter born in 1873in Château-Renault, Indre-et-Loire, whose compositions were often informed by mythology and Classical History.
He had originally worked as a market gardener until 1914, after his father, before serving in World War I. During the military service his drawing skills were noticed and he was trained as a mapmaker. After demobilization in 1919 he started his painter career.
His first exhibit was in 1920 at the Salon d'Automne. In 1927 he was commissioned by Diaghilev to design sets for Stravinsky's Apollon Musagète.
He died in 1958.

On April 25 is the birthday of

Bridget Louise Riley, English painter born in 1931, one of the foremost exponents of Op art. She currently lives and works in London, Cornwall and the Vaucluse in France.
She attended Cheltenham Ladies' College and then studied art at Goldsmiths College (1949–52), and later at the Royal College of Art (1952–55).
The large Whitechapel Gallery exhibition of Jackson Pollock, in the winter of 1958, was to have a major impact on her.
Her early work was figurative with a semi-impressionist style. Between 1958 and 1959 her work at the advertising agency showed her adoption of a style of painting based on the pointillist technique. Around 1960 she began to develop her signature Op Art style consisting of black and white geometric patterns that explore the dynamism of sight and produce a disorienting effect on the eye. In the summer of 1960 she toured Italy with mentor Maurice de Sausmarez, and the two visited the Venice Biennale with its large exhibition of Futurist works.
From 1961 to 1964 she worked with the contrast of black and white, occasionally introducing tonal scales of grey. She began investigating colour in 1967, the year in which she produced her first stripe painting.

On April 26 is the birthday of

(Gian) Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo, Italian painter born in 1538, best remembered for his writings on art theory, belonging to the second generation that produced Mannerism in Italian art and architecture.
His early training was with Giovan Battista della Cerva in Milan. He painted a large Allegory of the Lenten Feast for San Agostino in Piacenza (1567). Other works by his hand include an elaborate dome with Glory of Angels for the Capella Foppa in San Marco in Milan, and the Fall of Simon Magus in the wall of the chapel.
Lomazzo became blind in 1571, and turned to writing, producing two complex treatises that are milestones in the development of art criticism. His first work, Trattato dell'arte della pittura, scoltura et architettura (1584) is in part a guide to contemporary concepts of decorum, which the Renaissance inherited in part from Antiquity, which controlled a consonance between the functions of interiors and the kinds of painted and sculpted decors that would be suitable. Lomazzo offered a systematic codification of esthetics typical of the increasingly formalized and academic approaches prevalent during the later sixteenth century and has been described as a central figure in the development of Italian mannerist theories.
He died in 1592.

On April 27 is the birthday of

Emil Jakob Schindler, Austrian landscape painter born in 1842.
He was supposed to pursue a career in the military, but rejected that for a career in the arts. In 1860, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where he studied with Albert Zimmermann. He found his models, however, in the Dutch Masters such as Meindert Hobbema and Jacob Izaaksoon van Ruisdael. In 1873, he travelled to Venice, followed by trips to Dalmatia and Holland.
In 1881, he won the Reichel Prize, which came with a cash award of 1,500 Gulden, enabling the family to rent their own apartment. Winning the prize also served to attract clients and their financial condition continued to improve. After 1885, he spent his summers at the artists colony in Plankenberg Castle near Neulengbach. He had several students there, including Marie Egner, Tina Blau, Olga Wisinger-Florian and Luise Begas-Parmentier. Two years later, he received a commission from Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria to sketch the coastal towns in Dalmatia and Greece, as part of a project called "The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Pictures" (24 volumes). That same year, he became an honrary member of the Vienna Academy. In 1888, the Munich Academy followed suit.
He died in 1892.

On April 28 is the birthday of

Ubaldo Gandolfi, Italian painter of the late-Baroque period born in 1728, mainly active in and near Bologna.
He enrolled by the age of 17 at the Clementine Academy, where he apprenticed with Ercole Graziani the Younger, Felice Torelli, and Ercole Lelli. He was from a large family of prolific artists, including his sons Giovanni Battista and Ubaldo Lorenzo, as well as his brother Gaetano and nephews Mauro, Democrito (who became a pupil of Antonio Canova), and niece Clementina. Together, they are considered among the last representatives of the grand manner of painting characteristic of the Bolognese school, that had risen to prominence nearly two centuries earlier with the Carracci.
Gandolfi's work ranges from Baroque to Neoclassic styles, and specifically recalls the style of Ludovico Carracci. He completed, in 1770-75, a series of canvases on mythological narratives for the Palazzo Marescalchi in Bologna (two are now in Museum of North Carolina).
He died in Ravenna in 1781.

On April 29 is the birthday of

Hendrik Nicolaas (H.N.) Werkman, experimental Dutch artist, typographer and printer.
He established a printing and publishing house in Groningen that at its peak employed some twenty workers. Financial setbacks forced its closure in 1923, after which Werkman started anew with a small workshop in the attic of a warehouse.
Werkman was a member of the artists' group De Ploeg ("The Plough"), for whom he printed posters, invitations and catalogues. From 1923 to 1926, he produced his own English-named avant-garde magazine The Next Call, which, like other works of the period, included collage-like experimentation with typefaces, printing blocks and other printers' materials. He would distribute the magazine by exchanging it for works by other avant-garde artists and designers abroad and so kept in touch with progressive trends in European art. Among the most fruitful contacts were with Theo van Doesburg, Kurt Schwitters, El Lissitzky and Michel Seuphor, the last of whom exhibited a print of his in Paris.
Such contact was vital while Werkman was building up his business and could not leave Groningen. In 1929 he was able to visit Cologne and Paris, after which he developed a new printing method, applying the ink roller directly to the paper and then stamping to achieve unique effects on a simple handpress. The more complex of these required some fifty handlings in and out of the press and could take a whole day to complete. Another of his experimental techniques was the painstaking production of abstract designs using the typewriter, which he called tiksels. After 1929 he also began writing rhythmic sound poems.
In May 1940, soon after the German invasion of the Netherlands, Werkman started a clandestine publishing house, De Blauwe Schuit ("The Blue Barge"), which ran to forty publications, all designed and illustrated by Werkman.
He was shot by the Gestapo in the closing days of the war (1945).

Today, April 30, is the birthday of

Jean-Baptiste Gustave Deloye (Deloy), French sculptor born in 1838.
Student of François Jouffroy and Jean-Pierre Dantan, exhibited frequently in Parisian salons.
His works are numerous and among them are the caryatids of the castles of Chenonceau and Boissiere, as well as the beautiful monument to Garibaldi in Nice. In 1862 he won second place in the Grand Prix of Rome.
Knight of the Legion of Honor, Deloye also executed large decorative works in the courts of Vienna, Rome and St. Petersburg. He also designed statuettes for Meissen porcelain.
He contributed with two bas-reliefs cast in bronze for the monument to Juan Santamaria, Costa Rican hero who sacrificed his life in the battle of Rivas of the National Campaign 1856-1857 against the filibusters.
Probably his most-watched work is San Marcos set out in the d'Orsay Museum, a large statue in which the evangelist is mounted on a winged lion.
He died in 1899.

"Maya Series"

Korean sculptor Seung Mo Park creates large ephemeral portraits by layering frames of wire mesh together and cutting through the layers to create depth. Each work begins with a photograph which is superimposed upon the overlapping layers of wire with a projector. He then employs a subtractive technique of snipping away areas of mesh and netting. Each piece is several inches thick and the plane that forms the final image contains spaces that are a few finger widths apart, which contribute depth, movement and dimensionality to the portraits.

Paleta de Narmer / The Narmer Palette

Esquisto verde / siltstone, 64 x 45 cm., c.3050 A.C. / 31st century BC (circa)
Museo Egipcio (El Cairo, Egipto / Egypt)

Containing some of the earliest hieroglyphic inscriptions ever found, it is thought by some to depict the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the king Narmer. On one side, the king is depicted with the bulbed White Crown of Upper (southern) Egypt, and the other side depicts the king wearing the level Red Crown of Lower (northern) Egypt. The Palette, which has survived five millennia in almost perfect condition, was discovered by British archeologists James E. Quibell and Frederick W. Green, in what they called the Main Deposit in the Temple of Horus at Nekhen, during the dig season of 1897–1898.
