Lotta Blokker [Escultura]

Since I discovered the work of Lotta Blokker, she has become one of my favorite sculptors. The exquisite sensitivity shown in each work, the expression of bodies and expressiveness of the faces, the poses of the figures and harmony of the groups transmit a myriad of emotions with remarkable intensity.

Lotta Blokker is a Dutch sculptress born in Amsterdam in 1980.
When Lotta first encountered the work of the french sculptor Auguste Rodin, during a secondary school excursion to the Musée Rodin in Paris, Lotta Blokker felt that her destiny had been determined. “This is it”, she thought, looking at Rodin’s works. At the age of nineteen she travelled to Italy to study sculpture at the Florence Academy of Art.

Her talent was obvious and she started teaching even before she had graduated. The programme had a strong focus on learning the technique of sculpting. Observing, interpreting, drawing, modelling: the hand should follow the eye.
The high points of the history of the art of sculpture can be seen in Lotta Blokker’s works: from the Venus of Milo via Donatello’s Mary Magdalene to The Thinker by Auguste Rodin. But she also takes work by the great painters such as Vincent van Gogh, Lucian Freud and Marlene Dumas and translates them into sculptures. What all these examples from art history have in common with Blokker is a powerful and sensitive oeuvre that captivate and enchant the viewing public.
Her work can be found in private collections from Europe to the United States and is regularly featured in international exhibitions.

‘What happens at night, when the lights go out and the telephone no longer rings? When there are no appointments and the deep silence begins?’
The Dutch sculptor Lotta Blokker (Amsterdam 1980) often pondered over these questions, even as a child, as she lay awake and thought that everyone was asleep but her. Taking these memories as her starting point, she created the series entitled The Hour of the Wolf: nine life-size bronze sculptures that depict the feelings of the sleepless.

Blokker’s sculptures have enormous eloquence. In contrast to her young and delicate appearance, her hands are those of an experienced, established artist. Similar to the French sculptor August Rodin, Blokker also creates expressive sculptures that approach the oeuvre of German artist Käthe Kollwitz in their vulnerable allure. This makes her work powerful and impressive, but also very human and recognizable.

Trabajando / At Work

"An image created with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not the model," wrote Oscar Wilde.
In the documentary which can be seen here (in Dutch without subtitles), director Frans Weisz portrays Lotta Blokker while creating her project "The Hour of the Wolf". The title refers to the time when night turns to day, a moment in which insomniacs are overwhelmed by fear. Lotta wanted to create a group of images about that moment she knows so well. The result was exhibited with great success in Zwolle Foundation.

Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi (Donatello) was an early Renaissance sculptor born c.1386 in Florence, Italy.
He studied classical sculpture, and used this to develop a fully Renaissance style, whose periods in Rome, Padua and Siena introduced to other parts of Italy a long and productive career. He worked in stone, bronze, wood, clay, stucco and wax, and had several assistants, with four perhaps being a typical number. Though his best-known works were mostly statues in the round, he developed a new, very shallow, type of bas-relief for small works, and a good deal of his output was larger architectural reliefs.
He died in 1466.
