Gates of Paradise is a project that Anne has been working on for several years. It was conceived as an open-ended series, with each canvas connectin to the next to create what she describes as a "massive jigsaw". Although the paintings all work (and can be bought) individually, the underlaying sense of all thing relating to - and being part of - a whole is important to Middleton's artistic philosophy. As the Wall Street International noted, the effect is "to form an enduring visual statement that is both overwhelming and all encompassing in scale" - and one by which "we are confronted with and inspired to reconsider our impact on this fragile planet."
More panels from this series can be seen on artist's website, and an installation that shows the current status of the project.

«Prefiero [trabajar] a gran escala.

Anne Middleton is an Australian artist born in 1967 in Melbourne.
In 1985, Anne enrolled in an arts and crafts-based eductation degree at the University of Melbourne where she majored in painting and drawing.
She went on to study mural painting in Italy at the Il Laboratorio per Affresco di Vainella, and then again in 2004 as part of the Bogliasco Foundation’s fellowship programme, which developed her fascination with baroque oil glazing techniques.

Although Anne cites her idyllic childhood as her career’s prime inspiration, it’s clear that she would have been an artist even if she hadn’t grown up in such a creative wonderland. Her artist father, Max (see below), worked at home and proved a formative influence. “My child’s brain absorbed his highly refined painting techniques and his focus. Dad never taught me formally, although he had many other students over the years. Informally however, he taught me everything I needed to know about the process of making an oil painting.”

«As a teenager, I spent countless hours making things: fine silk embroidery, gingerbread houses complete with lattice windows and elaborate gardens, and detailed meandering patterns in pen. Becoming an artist almost happened by default for me. Fortunately my sensible parents recognised that my passion lay in the endless doodles that filled my teenage days.»

Otras series / Other Series

Flores explores the delight of blossom and the bounty of the garden. Oceania australis is a series inspired by the unique oceans of the southern coast of Australia. Nourish explores the extravagant diversity of fresh produce in our markets and gardens. This series was created predominantly in the medium of pastel on rag paper. Fronds is a series of large-scale paintings in oil on linen. Celebrating the unfurling fronds of the tree fern, Fronds references Anne’s childhood living amongst the lush rainforests of the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne. Inspired by her studies of Mural Painting and Fresco techniques in Italy throughout 1995, Anne created Creases – an exhibition of works comprised predominantly of egg and oil tempera on board.

«I do prefer [to work on] a large scale. It allows me to explore the fine detail of a subject, while still allowing me to place down some juicy paint. My paintings are not intended as simple representations – my iconography transports the viewer into a psychological and sensual drama played out on canvas.»

«Brushstrokes reveal the true confidence of a master painter: intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. A true master can suggest the most precise detail with the least expenditure of effort. No fussy brushstrokes; just deft, confident choice of colour and movement. I admire that highly refined confidence in any artist in any medium.” Anne particularly admires Van Eyck for “how loose and sensual his brushstrokes remain despite the confines of painting in miniature.»

Oceania Australis

Oceania Australis
"Rapsodia en agujas / Rhapsody in Garfish", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 152 x 152 cm., 2006

Through an extraordinarily refined and perfected painting technique, Anne Middleton explores our natural world in sublime detail. She examines the environment and our connectedness to it. Unapologetically beautiful, Anne’s paintings immerse the viewer in a utopian realm, minutely observed, with subjects as disarmingly familiar as a garden wren or a blossom in spring.
Anne’s deeply personal and poetic aesthetic has been developed over nearly thirty years of consistent dedication to her chosen medium of oil painting. Exhaustively accomplished to the most notable and exacting standards, Anne’s paintings are rendered with the empirical precision and fastidious accuracy of scientific illustration. Her paintings are equally placed within the domains of botanical science and that of the art museum.

Portrait Winner: Archibald Prize, People's Choice 2018

Anne pintando "Guy" con su modelo / painting Guy with his model

«Understanding some of the motivations and internal conflicts that shape a life is a crucial part of painting a portrait - the face and eyes reveal it all.... Guy Pearce has an extraordinary gaze that has long fascinated me, and his honesty about the forces that have melded his personality made his sittings a delight.

I painted Guy in the natural light of my studio. One side of his face is in deep shadow. Obscure and mysterious, it speaks of hidden, difficult times. The other side is brilliantly lit. It is an uncompromising light, honest and unflinching. This extreme tonality enabled me to explore Guy’s chameleon nature and his personal awareness of the light and dark within that makes him both an extraordinary actor and a kind, funny and unassuming bloke.»

Max Middleton
(Melbourne, Australia, 1922 - 2013)

"Pescador italiano / Italian Fisherman", óleo sobre lino sobre panel / oil on linen on board, 40 x 30 cm., 1952

"Amanecer / Sunrise, Strath Creek", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 91 x 122 cm., 1978

Max knew he wanted to be an artist from the age of 12. At 16 he started lessons in drawing at the National Gallery School, and practiced his oil painting technique on Sunday’s when his father drove him to the country to paint en plein air. Max studied privately with Septimus Power from 1940. Power greatly influenced Max’s early paintings with use of broad brush strokes and patterns of light and shade. Power became both a mentor and a friend to Max, and expressed his confidence in Max’s technical competence by inviting Max to assist with teaching.
In 1950 Max travelled to Europe to see the major museums and train at Heatherleys School in London, and in Florence at the Scuola di Belle Arti (School of Fine Art). In Europe his key influences were JMW Turner and Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, both en plein air painters of the transformative effects of light. He painted in Wales, Ireland, Paris and Spain and in the flourishing art community of Cornwall. It was in regional Spain that he chose to paint the people of the area, and since then, the human figure has been a recurring subject in his paintings. Max returned to Australia in 1953, excited to once again be painting landscape in the unique Australian light. He felt liberated by his altered perspectives and adapted his technique and to a style influenced by the European masters.
