On December 14 is the birthday of

Claude-François Attiret, sculptor of the Franche-Comté, born in 1728 in Dole.
He belonged to a dynasty of artists particularly active in the eighteenth century. Cousin of the Jesuit painter and missionary Jean Denis Attiret and the architect Antoine Louis Attiret, he received his training in the family workshop before being a student of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. He was admitted at the San Lucas Academy in Paris in 1760. His career was divided between the French capital, Franche-Comté and Burgundy, where the aristocratic clientele gave him important commissions (bas-reliefs of the Castle of Montmusard, of Plombières, hotel Buffon in Montbard, decoration of many private hotels in Dijon), without forgetting the significant public commissions (decoration of the triumphal arch, called Guillaume Gate, in Dijon, source of the Door of Arans in Dole).

Wikipedia

The monument consists of a group of bronze statues - by several artists - on stone plinths centred on a statue of Luther, surrounded by statues of related individuals and allegorical statues representing related towns. The elements are arranged in the shape of a castle, recalling Luther's hymn "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" ("A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"). It is one of the largest Luther Monuments. Copies of the central Luther statue are located in Europe and the United States, including the Luther Monument in Washington, D.C. (1884). Wikipedia

On December 15 is the birthday of

Ernst Friedrich August Rietschel, German sculptor born in 1804 in Pulsnitz, Saxony.
At an early age he became an art student at Dresden, and subsequently a pupil of Rauch in Berlin. He there gained an art studentship, and studied in Rome in 1827-28. After returning to Saxony, he soon brought himself into notice by a colossal statue of Frederick Augustus, King of Saxony; was elected a member of the academy of Dresden, and became one of the chief sculptors of his country. In 1832 he was elected to the Dresden professorship of sculpture, and had many foreign orders of merit conferred on him by the governments of different countries.

Rietschel's style was very varied; he produced works imbued with much religious feeling, and to some extent he occupied the same place as a sculptor that Overbeck did in painting. Other important works by him were purely classical in style. He was specially famed for his portrait figures of eminent men, treated with much idealism and dramatic vigour; among the latter class his chief works were colossal statues of Goethe and Schiller for the a monument in Weimar, of Weber for Dresden and of Lessing for Braunschweig cast by Georg Howaldt. He also designed the Luther Monument in Worms, Germany, and created two of its many statues, but died before it was completed.
The principal among Rietschel's religious pieces of sculpture are the well-known Christ-Angel, and a life-sized Pietá, executed for the king of Prussia. He also worked a great deal in reliefs, and produced many graceful pieces, especially a fine series of bas-reliefs representing "Night and Morning," "Noon and Twilight," designed with much poetical feeling and imagination.
He died in 1861.

Today, December 16, is the birthday of

José Miguel Blanco Gavilán, Chilean sculptor and draftsman born in 1839 in Santiago de Chile.
His artistic training began in a night course for workers, dictated by Juan Bianchi at the National Institute. In 1858 he entered the sculpture workshops of the School of Fine Arts, where he had as a teacher the Frenchman Auguste François. He integrated the first generation of Chilean sculptors, together with Nicanor Plaza.
In 1867 he traveled on a scholarship to Europe. In Paris he joined the renowned medallion workshop of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Farochon (1812-1871). Two years later he entered the School of Fine Arts, where he was a student of the sculptor Auguste Dumont (1801-1884) and Eugène Guillaume (1822-1905). Due to the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) he left France and traveled through Belgium, England and Italy. In this last country he continued his studies in Rome and Naples, particularly with the painter Giuseppe Mancinelli. Once the political situation was calm, Blanco returned to the French capital, resumed his studies and participated in some competitions. He returned to Chile in 1876, bringing with him approximately forty works among sculptures, bas-reliefs and medallions.

His time in Europe stimulated his intellectual vein. The works he produced on his return (among which "The drummer at rest"), show a refined technique and a global vision of the arts, but also a way of work permeated by a strong Americanist nationalism, present in almost all that first generation of sculptors.
He was also a writer and chronicler, mainly focused on the dissemination of art. He collaborated with the press and founded the artistic newspapers "El San Lunes" and "El Taller Ilustrado" (both in 1885). The latter circulated for almost four years and was one of the first art publications in Chile.
He died in 1897.

Today, December 16, is the birthday of

Josep Clarà i Ayats, Spanish Catalan sculptor born in 1878 in Olot, Girona.
He attended the Olot School of Drawing (Escola de Dibuix d'Olot) with professor Josep Berga i Boix (1837–1914). During Clarà's time at the school, Joaquín Vayreda (1843–1894) highly praised one of Clarà's drawings; this greatly encouraged Clarà's artistic endeavors and was one of his happiest childhood memories. In 1897, Clarà enrolled in the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse, France. He moved to Paris in 1890, where he met Auguste Rodin, which caused him to pursue sculpture. He also became close friends with sculptor Arístide Maillol. He was a student of Louis-Ernest Barrias. His sketches of dancer Isadora Duncan's distinct movements stand out among Clarà's work. After Duncan's death in 1927, Antonia Mercé instead served as Clarà's model. Clarà's training was capped off with travels to London and Italy.
