On November 26 is the birthday of

Ernest Pierre Joseph Prins, French painter, engraver and sculptor born in 1838 at the 7th arrondissement of Paris.
Mr Bourgeois, his maternal grandfather, made Prins an apprentice in his workshop. As he was passionate about sculpture, his mother suggested him to enrol an art class; he did it in 1861. His mother died in the same year.
Later he met Édouard Manet through his sister Pauline, a close friend of Manet's wife, Suzanne Leenhoff. In 1869, after he bought his maternal grandfather's workshop, he married Fanny Claus, a violinist and one of the figures in Manet's The Balcony, with Manet as a witness.
In 1871, the Paris Commune forced the couple to close their workshop. Therefore, they fleed to Belgium. They returned to Paris in the next year. His wife was suffering from illness. He had to sell everything to pay the medical fee. With the help of the Manet couple in 1873, Prins can go to work.

In 1874, Prins participated in the creation of the Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers and decided to move to Namur with his wife. Before leaving, he sent twelve of his paintings to his childhood friend, the sculptor Émile Philippe Scailliet, so that he can hand the paintings to Alfred Sisley, who must deposit them at the workshop of Nadar for their first exhibition, which took place from 15 April 1874 to 15 May 1874. The couple later returned to Paris in 1875. In 1876, Pierre Prins restored ancient ivories for the Louvre Museum, and went to paint in the countryside on the side of Bas-Meudon, at Île Seguin. His wife passed away in 1877, at the age of 31.
In 1890, Prins had his first one-man exhibition. Other than that, his works were also exhibited regularly at different salons.
He died in 1913.

"Der Streik / La huelga / The Strike", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 181,6 x 275,6 cm., 1886
Deutsches Historisches Museum (Berlín, Alemania / Germany). LeMOWikimedia Commons

LeMO

The painting "The Strike" shows the confrontation of a contractor with a group of workers on strike. An angry crowd stands in front of a factory owner who stands stiffly in tailcoat and top hat on the steps of his factory villa, and has a verbal battle with the leader of the angry crowd. His servant follows the scene, pale as hell. The tense situation can turn into aggression at any time, a worker is already bending down to arm himself with stones. From the background, in which smoking factory chimneys and port facilities are visible, more workers come over. Robert Koehler created this painting in Munich and presented it in 1886 at the National Academy of Design's spring exhibition in New York, where it became a sensation. Due to the current political crisis situation critics rated the picture as the most important contribution of the exhibition. In the spring of 1886, the workers' eight-hour work movement led to a nationwide wave of strikes that culminated on May 1, 1886, with around 350,000 workers in more than 11,000 companies, and a few weeks later was bloodily suppressed with the Haymarket massacre in Chicago. Through reproductions, Koehler's painting became an icon of the working-class movement: the workers do not appear as supplicants, but confidently express their demands. LeMO

On November 28 is the birthday of

Robert Köhler (Koehler), German-born (Hamburg, 1850) painter and art teacher who spent most of his career in the United States of America.
In 1871, he went to New York City for eye surgery, and stayed to work as a lithographer. After studying drawing in the night classes of the National Academy of Design, Koehler went to Munich to study fine art at the Royal Academy in 1873, studying with Karl von Piloty and Ludwig Thiersch. He returned to New York after two years because of depleted funds. In 1879, he was able to return to Munich with means furnished by George Ehret, of New York, whose attention had been drawn to the young artists's ambition and capabilities. On his second trip, he studied under Ludwig Löfftz and Franz Defregger. His friendships with William Merritt Chase and Frank Duveneck date from this time.
Koehler's work while in Munich won him silver and bronze awards from the Academy, and Bavaria's Cross of the Order of St. Michael. Koehler then set himself up as head of a private art school; pupils included Alfons Mucha.

On November 30 is the birthday of

Adriaen van de Velde, Dutch animal and landscape painter, baptized on 30 November 1636 in Amsterdam, son of Willem van de Velde the Elder and brother of Willem van de Velde the Younger, the marine painter.
Adriaen did not want to become a marine painter so he was trained in the studio of Jan Wynants, the landscape painter. There he made the acquaintance of Philip Wouwerman, who is believed to have aided him in his studies of animals, and to have exercised a powerful and beneficial influence upon his art. Having made exceptionally rapid progress, he was soon employed by his master to introduce figures into his landscape compositions, and he rendered a similar service to Hobbema, Ruisdael, Verboom and other contemporary artists.

His favourite subjects were scenes of open pasture land, with sheep, cattle and goats, which he executed with dexterity, with much precision of touch and truth of draughtsmanship, and with clear silvery colouring. He painted a few small winter scenes with skaters, and several religious subjects.
In addition to his paintings, of which nearly two hundred have been catalogued, he executed about twenty etchings. They are distinguished by directness of method and by delicacy.
He died in 1672.
