Anicet Charles Gabriel Lemonnier was a French painter born in 1743. He was a well-known painter of historical subjects who was active before, during and after the French Revolution.
He was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Descamps at the Rouen School of Fine Arts, then of Joseph-Marie Vien, where he had as classmates and friends Jacques-Louis David and François-André Vincent. With a pleasing appearance, much natural wit and excellent recommendations he was soon admitted into the best society in the capital, especially in the salon of Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin, who took a liking to him. In 1772 he exhibited The Children of Niobe killed by Apollo and Diana, a work that won him the Prix de Rome.
He lived in Rome, as a licensee of the Government, from 1774 to 1784. In this country of the arts, Lemonnier found a home full of kindness with the famous poet diplomat, Cardinal de Bernis, and devoted himself with enthusiasm to the study of masterpieces of the masters, from which he drew inspiration for the design and composition that is distinctive of his talent.
Back in France, Lemonnier returned to his hometown. In 1786, during the visit of Louis XVI to Rouen on his return from Cherbourg, Lemonnier was commissioned to paint a picture whose subject was the presentation of the members of the Rouen Chamber of Commerce to the monarch. Soon after, he performed for the same company a large allegorical painting representing the engineering trade and the discovery of America. In 1789 Lemonnier was named to the Academy of Painting for his work la Mort d’Antoine (the Death of Anthony).
During the French Revolution, Lemonnier was called to be part of the Committee on Monuments, and in 1794 he obtained the title of the cabinet painter of the School of Medicine. Related to Roland, on 4 December 1792 Lemonnier received from the minister a position at the Louvre which placed him on the Arts Commission, where he rendered great service. In Rouen he was charged, with his compatriot Charles Le Carpentier, to examine art works removed from suppressed religious institutions in the district and select those that should avoid destruction. He discharged this critical mission with great zeal, and it is due to Lemonnier that several churches and the museum of Rouen now possess many of the best paintings he managed to collect. In 1810 Lemonnier became director of the Gobelins Manufactory, a position he lost in 1816. He also took an active part in establishing the Museum of Fine Arts of Rouen.
He died in 1824.

Tullio Tulliach was an Italian painter born in Pola, Istria, in 1931.
In 1947 he had to leave his city following the events of the second post-war period. The Paris Peace Treaty, in fact, sanctions the cession of Istria to Tito's Yugoslavia. Like many other Istrians he decided, with his family, to move to the refugee camp of La Spezia where he begins to paint as a self-taught. In 1952 he moved to Turin, looking for a job but also to attend the free school of the Albertina Academy. At the end of the fifties, after having carried out research and in-depth studies on the painting of the group known as the "Six of Turin", he became a student of Francesco Menzio and in the sixties and seventies he interpreted the Piedmontese landscape in the light of studies on the futurist-inspired movement. The hills of Monferrato and Langhe, painted in those years, have nothing picturesque but are rather fragments of film, dotted with night lights, splinters of nature and places barely glimpsed from the cockpit of a car. Later, the recurring motif of his aesthetic research will be represented by the subject of the windows. The same landscape will no longer be observed in motion, but will be blocked and fixed within a precise boundary represented by the window through which the vision is filtered. The gaze on things now becomes more meditative and suspended.
Other subsequent artistic references, which will converge in his painting, will be the Italian metaphysics of the twentieth century and the Italian painting of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Lombardy. In particular, the painters Evaristo Baschenis, whose use of light he studies in still lifes, and Giacomo Cerutti (known as Pitocchetto), who depicted poor people, peasants and vagabonds with a sense of pity and strong empathy, in an almost documentary pictorial genre. In 1986, immediately after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, witnessing the agony of a seagull on the banks of the Stura, he came up with a painting that would later be called "terminalism". It is a painting that does not want to deviate from the great Italian tradition and that strives to maintain all the technical characteristics that have distinguished it: three-dimensionality, perspective depth, chiaroscuro and tonal color. His new painting finds its source of inspiration in things that wither, wither and eventually die. The artist paints the vegetation at the end of its life cycle, the animal remains stripped by time, the common objects abandoned by man, the fragments of anthropomorphic roots, the rhizomes, which the author's sensitivity transforms into painful metaphors of the human condition.
He died in Turin in September 2016.

Arte y odontología / Art and Dentistry (I)

What in its beginnings was a proposal by Shirley Rebuffo to dedicate a post to art related to dentistry, has become, thanks to meticulous searches for material on the net (one thing leads to another) in a miniseries in which we compile works of an artistic nature in which different elements related to this discipline are represented. Without wishing to be extraordinarily exhaustive in the analysis, we are interested in presenting a more or less chronological selection of visual records in which the subject is dealt with in some way, focusing basically on painting and some other graphic representations of interest.
In this first chapter, a presentation of the subject along with a selection of works related to dental practices in Egypt, Mesoamerica, and some Ottoman and Persian illustrations.

Three of six panels from the Mastaba of Hesy-Ra at Saqqara

BQDC

Tercer panel / Third Panel

Hesy-Ra was a high official of King Djoser who was Chief of Dentists and Physicians as well as holding other titles. The panels were discovered by Auguste Mariette in 1860 at Saqqara

Dental treatment has gone through many phases since its inception; from the most "terrifying" to the modern clinics of today. The first historical evidence of the literally plucking of damaged teeth dates from the Lower Paleolithic. But it is considered that Dentistry itself was born with the ancient Egyptians who already used toothpaste and made the first implants of precious stones, pearls and metals in their teeth. This makes them the first known to perform dental restorations and go beyond just removing a damaged piece. Studies have indicated that in 800 and 2500 BC the Etruscans and Phoenicians used gold bands and wires for the construction of dental prostheses. In the gums, extracted teeth were placed in the place of missing teeth and with the wires they were retained in the mouth. Later, they also put ivory prostheses in place of the pieces.

The first known person with the title of dentist-dentist was Hesy-Ra, during Dynasty III (which begins in 2700 BC with the reign of Sanakht and ends c. 2630 BC), around the time in that the first pyramids were built. It is at this time that dentistry is recognized as an important specialty.
We know this story thanks to a wooden tablet, which is still preserved today in the Cairo museum, from the tomb of Hesy-Ra, in which the title and position of chief of doctors can be perfectly read, with the inscription "the greatest of doctors who treat teeth." This object dates from 3000 BC and seems to be the oldest in which this profession is named. BQDC

Painting in the North-West Wall. Tepantitla Palace. facebook

In America, Mayan tombs inlaid with gold, precious stones or minerals have been found for the restoration of teeth, not only for health, but also for ornamental aesthetics. Later the Incas and Aztecs emulated the Mayan methods for the reconstruction of teeth.

The Tepantitla palace is a departmental complex where the upper class of the city of Teotihuacán lived, whose ruins are located in the State of Mexico. The emergence of the city and its boom, which lasted several centuries, is reported approximately between the years 1-750, having its golden age between 450 and 600.
On the southwest wall in the Tepantitla palace, two scenes can be seen represented by various glyphs of what appear to be dental procedures. Its importance lies in the fact that it is the first traces printed in Mesoamerica. The former has been adopted as the symbol of dentistry in Mexico, and both are part of the richness of Mexican mural painting and pre-Hispanic culture.

Wikipedia

In this medical textbook the descriptions of the diagnosis, classifications, and techniques used are explained in detail in the Turkish language. Cerrahiyyet’u¨l Haniye was written in rhyme and meter in describing the different treatments, which was common practice for writers of the time.

The idea of a tooth worm is a theory of the cause of caries, periodontitis and toothaches. Once widespread, the belief is now obsolete, having been superseded by more scientific rationales. It was supposed that the disease was caused by small worms resident within the tooth, eating it away.
The origins of the belief are wrapped in obscurity. A prominent early mention, a Babylonian cuneiform tablet titled "The Legend of the Worm" (sometimes erroneously dated to Sumerian times), recounts how the tooth worm drinks the blood and eats the roots of the teeth – causing caries and periodontitis.
