Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 50 x 70 cm. MutualArt

"Natură statică / Naturaleza muerta / Still Life", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 65,5 x 73 cm. Grimberg

"Natură statică cu trofeu de vânătoare / Bodegón con trofeo de caza / Still Life With Hunting Trophy"
Óleo y collage de papel sobre lienzo / oil and paper collage on canvas, 98 × 114 cm. Artmark

"Natură statică cu scoică și pipă / Bodegón con concha marina y pipa / Still Life With Seashell and Pipe"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80,5 × 64,5 cm. Artmark

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 78 x 63 cm., c.1910. Wikimedia Commons

"Mariscador en la playa / Shell Fisher on the Beach"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 64,5 x 115,5 cm., 1913. Christie's

"Gen&ética / Gene&ethics", 170 x 170 x 10 cm., 2011

"Conciencia plateada / Silver Awareness", 100 x 100 x 5 cm., 2012

"Espacios moleculares. Síndrome de Stendahl Nº 3 /
Molecular Spaces, Stendhal syndrome n3", 170 x 170 x 10 cm., 2008

"Luz roja / Redlight", 86 x 119 x 10 cm., 2012

Retrato de una mujer / Portrait of a Woman", 1912. Ancox

En la fuente / At the Source"
Óleo sobre cartón / oil on cardboard, 110 x 96 cm., 1913. Invaluable

Autorretrato con su esposa Martha / Self Portrait with his Wife Martha"
Pastel, 1913. Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie (Ratisbona, Alemania / Regensburg, Germany)

Óleo sobre panel lumbercore / oil on lumbercore panel, 55,9 x 71,1 cm., 1916
Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) (Nueva York, EE.UU./ NY, USA)

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 102,07 × 106,83 cm., 1913

"El pescador / The Fisherman", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 1917
Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth, Texas, EE.UU./ TX, USA)

"Amor de invierno / Love of Winter", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 81,6 x 101,6 cm., 1914

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 114,2 x 160,02 cm., 1918
Springfield Museums (Massachusetts, EE.UU./ MA, USA). Wikipedia

The subject for_The Murder of Edith Cavell_ is the execution of a British Red Cross nurse in Brussels. When the German army occupied the Belgian capital city in 1914, Edith Cavell helped French and British soldiers and civilians evade capture and escape to neutral territories. Despite international outcry at her imprisonment and conviction, she was killed by a firing squad in the early morning of October 12, 1915. Her death became a dramatic narrative for wartime propaganda aimed at bolstering support for anti-German efforts.

Textos en inglés / English translation

On August 6 is the birthday of

Ion Pacea, Romanian painter born in Horopain, Greece, in 1924, honorary member of the Romanian Academy, considered one of the greatest painters of modern Romanian painting.
He is best known by a series dedicated to the classic genre of painting: landscapes, still life, marine, interior landscapes. With a figurative base solidly anchored in a profound knowledge of European painting, he managed to create a clearly recognizable imagery. The brilliance of its color is supported by a paradoxical alliance between the flattened surfaces of the forms and a free, vibrant, gestural touch.
He studied at the Belle-Arte Academy and the Free Academy "Guguianu", where Camil Ressu, Jean Alexandru Steriadi and Alexandru Ciucurencu were his professors. He debuted at the Official Salon in Bucharest in 1947.
He builded a solid career with several personal and collective exhibitions in the country and abroad; In Paris, Berlin, Prague, Dresden, Edimburg, Washington, Munich, Moscow, Sofia.
His career was crowned by several important national and international awards, such as the "Ion Andreescu" Prize of the Romanian Academy (1963), the Painting Prize (1965) and the UAP Grand Prix (1967)
Occasionally, he performed roles in several Romanian films, he had two main roles, one in De trei ori București (Three Times Bucharest), and another one (which was best known) in Bietul Ioanide (Memories from an Old Chest of Drawers) directed by Dan Piţa (1979).
He died in 1999.

On August 7 is the birthday of

Gerhard Arij Ludwig "Morgenstjerne" Munthe, Norwegian marine painter born in 1875 in Düsselforf, who had the greatest part of his artistic life in the Netherlands.
Munthe was the son of the Norwegian painter Ludvig Munthe. In 1872, his father married the Dutchwoman Lene Wilhelmina Vlierboom (1853-1901), the daughter of a Dutch shipowner. The couple had four children, among them the later portrait and genre painter Christopher Munthe. In his youth, Gerhard added to his name "Morgenstjerne (mornings)", in order to distinguish himself from his homonymous relative Gerhard Munthe, also a painter.
Munthe grew up in Düsseldorf, where he also attended the Kunstakademie. He developed a special interest for the coastal landscapes of Holland, which he had already known early on his travels with his father to Katwijk aan Zee. After his father died 1896, Munthe moved with his mother to The Hague. In 1901 he moved with his wife, Christine van Gendt, to an apartment in Katwijk. Later he moved several times.
Munthe was a member of the Hague Artistic Association Pulchri Studio and Arti and Amicitiae in Amsterdam. In 1905 and 1910 he exhibited in the Salon de Paris.
At the age of 51 he died in a Leiden hospital.

On August 8 is the birthday of

Rafael López, Mexican-American internationally recognized illustrator and artist born in 1961 in Mexico City.
A children’s book illustrator, he won the 2016 Pura Belpré Award with his illustrations for Drum Dream Girl and the 2010 Pura Belpre medal for Book Fiesta!. Lopéz has also been awarded the 2017 Tomás Rivera Book Award, three Pura Belpré honors for illustration in 2014, 2012 and 2004 and two Américas Book Awards. In 2012, he was chosen by the Library of Congress to create the National Book Festival Poster and has been a featured book festival speaker at this event. López has illustrated seven stamps for the United States Postal Service. In 2012 and 2008, he was selected by the Obama/Biden campaign to create two official posters at Artists for Obama called Estamos Unidos and Voz Unida.

On August 9 is the birthday of

Katrin Fridriks, artist from Iceland born in 1974 in Reykjavik. She is an abstract painter who explores speed, gravity, growth and the interaction of man and nature in different media.
Her notoriety is mainly based on her paintings and painterly installations, one of which is installed at the Nautical stadium in Nîmes, but connecting with land art has also been an important element in her work. Her painterly creations are often integrated into paintscapes and site-specific installations that exceed the limits of painting traditionally conceived.
We believe that there is a fundamental tension which explains the appeal of Fridriks’ works: As they are based on the exploration of fundamental experiences, Fridriks creations are
immediately captivating. Having different layers that unfold over time, each new contemplation is rewarding and gives way to discoveries.
Showcased at the Venice Biennale and the Icelandic Art Center in Reykjavik in 2015, the Circle Culture Gallery in Berlin, the Museum Arts Center in Seoul in 2013, ART13 in London as well as the Liverpool Biennale, her works are also in private collections. Fridriks has received commissions from POW, Michael Goss Foundation, Ralph Lauren Foundation, Bacardi Martini, Land Rover as well as the French Ministry for Youth & Sports.

On August 10 is the birthday of

June Berry, British artist born in 1924, originally from Melbourne, Derbyshire, United Kingdom.
She studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. She has had several solo exhibitions including a retrospective at the Bankside Gallery, London in 2002. Her paintings have been exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London since 1952. June Berry was Vice-President of the Royal Watercolour Society from 2001 to 2004.
Her work is included in the collections of HM the Queen, the British Government Art Collection, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the National Museum of Wales, the Royal West of England Permanent Collection, the Graphothek, Berlin, Germany and the All Union Society of Bibliophiles, Moscow, Russia. Her work has also been purchased by many private collectors in the UK, USA, Germany and Russia. She is a Member of the Royal Watercolour Society, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, the New English Art Club and is a Royal West of England Academician.
Kate Nelson in the Eastern Daily Press relates how June Berry "wowed judges of a national competition" in 2008 when she was a finalist in The Sunday Times watercolour competition of that year. She was also a highly commended finalist in the Sunday Times competition in 2011. She is described in an article by Pat Harvey in The Artist "as one of the treasures of British contemporary art".

On August 11 is the birthday of

Robert Lvovich Genin (Роберт Львович Генин), Russian artist born in 1884 in Vysokoye near Klimovichi in the Region of Mogilev, now Belarus. He was a  painter, draftsman, and illustrator, who lived in the Russian Empire, Germany, France, Switzerland and the USSR.
Genin studied art in Vilna (1898-1900) and in Odessa (1900-1902). At the end of 1902 he moved to Munich where for a couple of weeks he attended the school of Anton Ažbe. In 1903, he moved to Paris, where he lived in La Ruche from 1905-1907. In Paris, he admired the art of Puvis de Chavannes, and many notable early works of Genin (until 1914) bear his influence.
In 1907, Genin returned to Munich and began to work for the magazine Jugend, where 40 of his illustrations were published. In 1912, he became one of the founding members of the artists group Sema, and in 1913 became a member of the Münchener neue Secession. The outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918) was a disastrous turn for this rise in the German art scene, and during the war Genin was interned in Munich as citizen of a hostile state. After the war he moved to Berlin.
In 1919, he has acquired a small house in the fishering village of Ascona in Switzerland, where he subsequently spent several months each year.
Over the period of 1915-1926, the Genin's styles of painting and drawing developed in line with the direction of German expressionism.
In 1926, Genin undertook a voyage to the island of Bali, which provided important impulse to his work. Genin wrote and illustrated a book about his impressions, which was published 1928. In 1929, Genin moved to Paris. There, his artistic style developed further under the influence of Fauvism and Neo-primitivism.
In 1936, Genin finally returned to the USSR, with the intention of taking an active part in building up the new socialist society by painting frescos on the walls of Moscow's new buildings. In March of that year, while Genin was already in Moscow, his first (and the last) American exhibition was held in NYC at Lilienfeld Galleries.
In Moscow, his first major commission was a fresco for one of the pavilions at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSKhV). However, in October 1938, the fresco has been covered up, in line with the political processes which had gained strength in the USSR. His second major commission in Moscow was frescoes for the Palace of Soviets, a commission which was terminated by the outbreak of the Second World War. Genin has committed suicide in August 1941, a few days after a devastating air raid by German bombers.

Today, August 12, is the birthday of

George Wesley Bellows, American realist painter born in 1882 in Columbus, Ohio, known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City, becoming, according to the Columbus Museum of Art, "the most acclaimed American artist of his generation".
At age 10 George decided to become an athlete, and trained himself to become a popular baseball and basketball player. He enrolled at The Ohio State University (1901–1904). There he played for the baseball and basketball teams, and provided illustrations for the Makio, the school's student yearbook. He was encouraged to become a professional baseball player, and he worked as a commercial illustrator while a student and continued to accept magazine assignments throughout his life. Despite these opportunities in athletics and commercial art, Bellows desired success as a painter. He left Ohio State in 1904 just before he was to graduate and moved to New York City to study art.
Bellows was soon a student of Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. While studying there, Bellows became associated with Henri's "The Eight" and the Ashcan School, a group of artists who advocated painting contemporary American society in all its forms. By 1906, Bellows and fellow art student Edward Keefe had set up a studio at 1947 Broadway Street.
Bellows first achieved widespread notice in 1908, when he and other pupils of Henri organized an exhibition of mostly urban studies. While many critics considered these to be crudely painted, others found them welcomely audacious, a step beyond the work of his teacher. Bellows taught at the Art Students League of New York in 1909, although he was more interested in pursuing a career as a painter. His fame grew as he contributed to other nationally recognized juried shows. Bellows' urban New York scenes depicted the crudity and chaos of working-class people and neighborhoods, and satirized the upper classes.
Growing prestige as a painter brought changes in his life and work. Though he continued his earlier themes, Bellows also began to receive portrait commissions, as well as social invitations, from New York's wealthy elite.
The always socially conscious Bellows also associated with a group of radical artists and activists called "the Lyrical Left", who tended towards anarchism in their extreme advocacy of individual rights. He taught at the first Modern School in New York City (as did his mentor, Henri), and served on the editorial board of the socialist journal, The Masses, to which he contributed many drawings and prints beginning in 1911.
As Bellows' later oils focused more on domestic life, with his wife and daughters as beloved subjects, the paintings also displayed an increasingly programmatic and theoretical approach to color and design, a marked departure from the fluid muscularity of the early work.
One of Bellows' central subjects was the sea, and he painted over 250 scenes of it during the course of his career.
He died in 1925.
