On August 21 is the birthday of

Yasin Osman, award-winning Toronto based photographer and Early Childhood Educator who was born to Somali parents in 1992. Yasin uses photography to showcase stories of perseverance, resilience and the power of community. Yasin currently focuses on humanitarian work, traveling to countries around the world to document stories of marginalization, culture and religion.
Yasin grew up as an only child in Regent Park and he often saw firsthand the impact that a lack of opportunities can have on a neighbourhood—from poverty to unemployment. But despite the challenges faced by many Regent Park residents, that did not stop him from breaking out. Yasin has won numerous awards for his work including a Basquiat Neon Crown from the Art Gallery of Ontario and an Adelaide Gyamfi Award from The Remix Project.
In an Interview with American Photo Mag he says “The way I got into photography had to do with Regent Park, the neighborhood that I’m from,” The area once had a reputation for poverty, gangs and drugs, but has been rapidly gentrifying in recent years. And from his apartment window, he had a front row seat. “I would use my mom’s cell phone to take pictures of these changes,” he says. Despite the major changes, Osman says there’s no better place to grow up. Families are very close, and everybody knows everyone.
Growing up Yasin grew tired of hearing the same gun-related stories over and over again. He wanted to find a way to change the conversation from one of fear and hate into one of art and creativity. Yasin began a project called #ShootForPeace — an idea born out of a weekly excursion he took with kids from the neighborhood, several cameras, and the goal of teaching how to take great photos. Yasin used his love of photography to inspire local youth to find their passion.

On August 22 is the birthday of

Theodore Fonville Winans, American photographer born in 1911, whose black-and-white images documented south Louisiana people and places. He established a successful practice as a wedding and portrait photographer, but is best known for his images of south Louisiana's rugged outdoors, and its fishermen and swamp dwellers.
Fonville was born on in Mexico, Missouri and spent part of his childhood in Fort Worth, Texas, where, as a senior in high school, he purchased his first camera, a Kodak 3A model. Armed with this camera, Fonville shortly won $15 in a photography contest, which stirred his interest in pursuing photography as a career.
In 1928, Fonville moved to Louisiana to work in construction, and it was during this time that he fell in love with the state. Fonville began photographing the state's southern swamps and grassy coastal wetlands, as well as the people who inhabited them, most notably the Cajuns. "Louisiana was my Africa, my South America," he recalled.
In 1934 he became a student at Louisiana State University, where he majored in journalism and performed in the school's brass choir. He often photographed on LSU campus and had images published in the Reveille student newspaper and in the school's yearbook, Gumbo.
Around 1940 Fonville opened his own photography studio in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Eventually he established a solid reputation as a wedding and studio portrait photographer, capturing images of local beauties and state politicians.
He died in 1992.

On August 23 is the birthday of

Regina Relang (Lang-Kurtz), renowned German photographer born in Stuttgart in 1906.
She was a freelance fashion photographer, among other things a permanent employee of the magazine Madame. Relang studied painting at the Werkkunstschule Krefeld, the Staatliche Akademie der bildenden Künste Stuttgart and the Akademie am Steinplatz in Berlin. She graduated in 1932 with an exam as a designer. Further studies at the Académie Ozenfant with the French painter Amédée Ozenfant.
Her first photographs were presumably inspired by her sister Urs Lang-Kurz, who studied theory of photography and followed her to Paris.
She traveled across several countries in Europe between 1932 and 1939. Since 1936 she published her travel portraits.
Her fashion photographs were featured in magazines such as the French, English and American Vogue, Madame, Image of the Woman, and Harper's Bazaar.
After the Second World War she move to Munich. Twice a year she made photo reports on the presentations of fashion collections in Florence, Rome, Paris and Berlin. She photographed for designers such as Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin or Yves Saint Laurent. In the 1950s and 60s, she was Germany's leading fashion photographer.
Between 1976 to 1988 she had exhibitions throughout the Federal Republic of Germany.
She died in 1989.

On August 24 is the birthday of

Ira Wilmer (Will) Counts Jr., American photographer born in 1931 in Little Rock, best known in Arkansas for his photographs during the 1957 desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock (Pulaski County). His photographs have been widely recognized as among the most memorable of the twentieth century.
Photography had not interested him until his junior year, when he saw an advertisement for a Speed Graphic camera in Boys’ Life magazine. He asked his mother for one as a Christmas present, but, with his father overseas fighting in World War II, she could only afford a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye.
In 1949, Counts entered Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas) and helped pay his way by working as the school’s photographer and as a freelance shooter for the Arkansas Gazette and the Arkansas Democrat. He received a BA in education in 1952. After earning his master’s degree in education in 1954 at Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington, Indiana, he worked briefly as a photographer at the Arkansas Democrat and then at the IU audiovisual center. In June 1957, he was rehired at the Democrat as a staff photographer for its Sunday Magazine.
Counts’s first powerful images of the Central High School desegregation crisis appeared on September 4, 1957. The most recognizable photo is that of Elizabeth Eckford being harassed by white students in the front of the school. In his 1999 book about the crisis, A Life Is More Than a Moment, Counts explains that he wore a red plaid shirt while shooting at Central to avoid looking like an “Eastern Establishment” journalist. His book also reveals that using a 35mm Nikon S2 camera with a wide-angled lens gave him a significant technical advantage over the other photographers, who were shooting with large Speed Graphic press cameras that required reloading after each shot. Counts was able to shoot thirty-six exposures before reloading and was thereby able to follow the example of his idol, French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, who believed that shooting many exposures would increase the chances of getting the best representative shot of an event. In 1997, Counts and his wife, Vivian, successfully organized a reconciliation between Eckford and Hazel Bryan Massery, the young white student pictured screaming at Eckford in the now infamous photo.
He died in 2001.

On August 25 is the birthday of

Andreas Horvath, Austrian photographer and filmmaker born in 1968 in Salzburg.
He studied photography at the "Graphische Bundes- Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt" in Vienna (1990-1992) and film at the Multimedia Art School in Salzburg (1996-2000). He worked as an assistant of the US photographers Ernestine Ruben and Linda Troeller.
His body of photographic work includes the black and white photo albums Yakutia – Siberia of Siberia (2003) and Heartlands – Sketches of Rural America (2007).
Horvath's filmography includes shorts as well as feature-length documentaries which have won first prizes at festivals like the Chicago International Documentary Festival, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival or the Max Ophüls Preis Festival. In 2013 Horvath received the Outstanding Artist Award of the Austrian Ministry of Culture.
In the years 2007 and 2008 Andreas Horvath also directed four music videos for the British singer and songwriter Sarah Nixey, a former member of the English indie rock group Black Box Recorder.

On August 26 is the birthday of

Marko Modic, Slovenian photographer, painter and visual artist born in 1958 in Ljubljana.
Photographic and artistic circles of the world attributed Marko Modic a special place because of his unique and colorful works of art.
In 1976 he got his first camera Praktica from his father. At the beginning he worked in black and white photographs and later embarked on a more complex photo-montage that he uses also in his work today. Photograph is used occasionally as a basis on which then he draws a picture. In his work are photographs, paintings, books, as well as performances. Modic's enigmatic photographic works show an extreme sensibility towards perception and use of colors. He captures details of everyday objects or places and uncommolnly presents them evoking ambiguous interpretation and curiosity.
In 1988 Marko Modic won a "Zlata ptica", for Slovenian creators and executants for extraordinary achievements on different fields of cultural creation.
Marko Modic has exhibited his photographs widely at home, in Italy, Ecuador, Argentina, UK, Canada... In 2011 he has an exhibition "Written on skin of the Earth" in Tivoli Park in Ljubljana, Slovenia and in Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Banff, Canada.
