"La chica y los elefantes / The Girl and Elephants"

"Dama de rojo / Lady in Red"

What Whe Lose in Flowers..."
Copia de inyección de tinta de archivo / Archival inkjet print, 76,2 x 60,96 cm., 2012. Ed.100. Paddle8

“What We Lose in Flowers” is the artist’s tongue-in-cheek nod to the house's co-founder, Bill Powers. Prince’s application of DVD stickers to his works offers a collaged study of violence and banality in contemporary culture. This exact dichotomy is a pervasive theme throughout the artist’s oeuvre, articulating the "sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll" ideology that has come to denote his reputation in the otherwise white-walled art world.

This Prince’s series of works depict “biker girls.” While we are used to seeing men in this context, Prince presents an alternative view of biker culture. As is typical of Prince’s works, the artist draws upon advertisements or other aspects of visual culture as the foundation for his works. Here, Prince has appropriated images from advertisements placed by women in biker magazines. He then re-photographs and enlarges the works, highlighting the women at the focus of the images, while simultaneously bringing to mind our ideas of gender roles in our culture.

Textos en inglés / English translation

On August 1 is the birthday of

Josef Ehm, an important Czech photographer, teacher and editor born in Habartov in 1909.
He taught at the State Graphic School in Prague (1934-46). Between 1939 and 1941 he edited with Jaromír Funk the magazine Photographic Horizon. In 1943 he participated as author of several pictures for the modern Czech photography portfolio.
In its free form, Ehm’s work was a remarkable representative of the stream based on the New Objectivity. In his work, the link between a sense of purist photography and perfection crafts is apparent.
He died in 1989.

On August 2 is the birthday of

Kate Steinitz, German-American artist and art historian born in Beuthen, Upper Silesia (now Bytom, Poland), affiliated with the European Bauhaus and Dadaist movements in the early 20th century. She is best known for her collaborative work with the artist Kurt Schwitters, and, in later life, her scholarship on Leonardo da Vinci.
She was educated in Berlin, where he attending drawing classes with Käthe Kollwitz and later the “Malschule für Frauen” (Women’s Painting School) run by the artist Lovis Corinth. She also attended the Academie und Studienateliers fuer Malerei und Plastik (connected with the Berlin Secession art association), and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Sorbonne in Paris.
In 1917 his husband was called to the front, and in 1918 the Steinitz family relocated to Hanover.
While in Hanover, Steinitz painted portraits of her daughters. Other favored subjects for her drawings and paintings included dancers, entertainers, and other performers. She became highly involved in the local art scene, including the burgeoning Dada movement.
Steinitz collaborated with her friend, the artist Kurt Schwitters on several projects, including children's books, opera librettos, books, and festivals. Together with Theo van Doesburg, Schwitters and Steinitz produced several children's fairy-tale books that featured unusual typography.
In 1936, the Steinitz family immigrated to New York City to escape Nazi persecution, after having been told by government authorities that she could no longer write for German publications. While in New York Steinitz continued to paint, and to augment the family's income by doing freelance commercial art work and research assignments.
After the dead of her daughter and her husband, Steinitz moved to San Francisco. In 1944, she became an American citizen. In 1945 she relocated to Los Angeles and took a position as the librarian of the Leonardo da Vinci collection owned Dr. Elmer Belt, who had been her urologist. The da Vinci collection was donated to the University of California Los Angeles in 1961, Steinitz was named as honorary curator of the Elmer Belt Library of Vinciana, by Librarian Lawrence Clark Powell and Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy.
She died in 1975.

On August 3 is the birthday of

Kenvin Pinardy, professional Indonesian photographer living in the capital of Jakarta.
He primarily makes his living doing weddings and fashion shoots for domestic and foreign magazines, though his interests as a photographer range well beyond that.
Pinardy first became interested in photography in the mid-1990s while a college student. But that initial enthusiasm was put on the back burner as he finished a degree in accounting and went to work for a chemical company. His interest in photography returned in 2004, and he quickly became interested in portraiture. “Initially, I preferred a more classic style of photography,” he explains. “I don’t find what I would describe as ‘classic style’ images to be boring, but I am bored by ‘straight’ portrait images. I started working to create my own style that was classically based, but dreamy and dark. I always try to give my photos that feeling, and to create photos with my own unique style, rather than following the style of others. Digital photography has really helped me to create photos that align with my imagination.”
In addition to his more journalistic images, Pinardy has been working on a series of underwater images that require his spending time in the depths of a swimming pool wearing diving gear and oxygen tanks while an assistant feeds oxygen to his models between shots.

On August 4 is the birthday of

Moritz Nähr, Austrian photographer born in 1859.
Nähr was a friend of the members of the Vienna Secession art group. He is best known for his portraits of Gustav Klimt, Gustav Mahler, and Ludwig Wittgenstein.
He died in 1945.

On August 5 is the birthday of

Rafael Sanz Lobato, Spanish photographer born in Seville in 1932, National Photography Prize in 2011, «for his expertise to show the transformation of the rural world».
His family moved to Madrid in 1941 and in 1956 bought his first camera. In 1964 he was part of the Real Sociedad Fotográfica de Madrid. In 1965, along with other photographers, he founded the group La Colmena. When the group disappeared, he participated in the creation of Group 5. His work focuses on traditional country scenes, pictures of provincial towns and their traditional festivities, as well as portraits, which is why he has been considered a pioneer in this type of anthropological photography .
He was a member of a generation that was riding between the years 1950 and 1970. In 1971 he left the Real Sociedad Fotográfica by differences with Gerardo Vielba and shortly after it became professional photographer.
The Ministry of Culture, in awarding the National Prize, emphasized the coherence and solidity of his work, which "constitutes a bridge between the new neorealist vanguard of the postwar period and the methods of photographic observation after 1968".
He died in 2015 in Madrid because of lung cancer.

Today, August 6, is the birthday of

Richard Prince, American painter and photographer born in 1949 in the U.S.-controlled Panama Canal Zone, now part of the Republic of Panama.
Prince began appropriating photographs in 1975. His image, Untitled (Cowboy), a rephotograph of a photograph taken originally by Sam Abell and appropriated from a cigarette advertisement, was the first rephotograph to raise more than $1 million at auction when it was sold at Christie's New York in 2005.
