"Álamos / Poplars", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 88 x 80,5 cm., 2007

"La lectora solitaria / The Lonely Reader", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80 x 99 cm., 2006

"Dame mit Locken / Dama con rizos / Lady With Curl", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 62 × 46 cm. Link

"Fé / Faith", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 91.5 x 61 cm. The Saleroom

"Paseo / Walk", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 1999. Link

"El ángel con la serpiente / The Angel With the Serpent"

"Clitia / Clythie", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 106 x 44,5 cm., 1886-7. Sotheby's

"Bijin en Kimono rojo / in Red Kimono", rollo / scroll/makuri roll, 51 x 41 cm. Ohmi Gallery

On August 27 is the birthday of

Valery Veselovsky (Валерий Веселовский), Russian artist born in 1964 in Moskow. He was engaged in art studios and paints since 1981.
In 1990 he finished faculty of easel painting and drawing of a Publicity University of Arts Krupskaya in Moscow. He's a member of the Moscow branch of the Artists’ Union of Russia and the Moscow Association of Artists International Art Fund. He participated in several local and international exhibitions and contests.
His art draw inspiration from the poetry of Russian scenery, the rural life in that country, and high aesthetic qualities of old Russia’s architecture. His intention is not to delineate the image of a particular piece of scenery, but to bring out through art what is common for Middle Russia’s nature in it. A picture to him is not just an enlarged and polished up sketch, but the product of imagination.
Veselovsky is a tireless experimentalist. He experiments with texture and materials in order to achieve beautiful colors. Trying to achieve spontaneity and freedom in his treatment of colours, Valery explores their possiblities by using rough and smooth textures or by making use of paste-like gabs. Frequently uses heavy canvas material suchas jute or burlap to achieve texture.
Many of his works are an intricate cross between genre and landscape painting. People are not just present in his pictures, but they live in them as they go about their everydey business. The artist’s works can be found in private collections in Russia, America and Europe.

On August 28 is the birthday of

Georg Cornicelius, German painter and draftsman born in 1825.
He was the son of the porcelain painter Friedrich Cornicelius in Hanau. After his school years, he attended the Hanauer Zeichenakademie from 1838 to 1848. Together with his classmates Carl Friedrich Deiker, Friedrich Karl Hausmann and Gustav Spangenberg, he received a thorough training as an artist and portrait painter from Director Theodor Pélissier (1794-1863). In 1848 he continued his studies at the Academy of Antwerp and moved to Dresden in 1851 after a temporary interlude in Hanau, which he left again in 1852. Further study visits took him to Paris, Florence, Venice, Verona and Munich, until he settled again in Hanau.
In 1872 he was appointed honorary member of the Hanauer Zeichenakademie, and in 1888 he was appointed titular professor. Cornicelius founded and directed a private school for painting for several decades. His oeuvre as a historian and art painter was as famous as his portrait art. Since 1854, works by Cornicelius have been found at most of the great art exhibitions in Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin and other places.
He died in 1898

On August 29 is the birthday of

Emil Schumacher, German painter born in 1912 in Hagen, Westphalia, a representative of Informalism.
From 1926 to 1931 he attended the Oberrealschule in Hagen.
From winter semester 1931/32 to the end of the winter semester 1933/1934, Schumacher studied advertising graphics at the Art and Crafts Education School in Dortmund. From 1935 to 1939 he worked as a freelance painter without participating in exhibitions.
After the transfer of power to the National Socialists, Schumacher was not admitted to the Imperial Chamber of Fine Arts because of the reproach of "Cultural Bolshevism". In the war years he was a technical draftsman in the Akkumulatoren-Werke, a Hagen armaments company. In 1941 he married Ursula Klapprott. Immediately after the end of the war he started a new beginning as a freelance artist.
After the Second World War, Schumacher began with Cubist landscapes, and in 1947 he had his first solo exhibition in the Studio for New Art in Wuppertal, which was set up by architect Rasch, and co-founded the Young West Artist Association. In 1948 he received the Prize Junger Westen of the city of Recklinghausen. In the same year Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum Hagen bought two of his paintings, "Still life" and "Still life with mushrooms". In the 1950s he developed works that lived only from the color without any constructive scaffolding. The dominant theme of his work is the inherent value of color and color as a matter.
In 1954 Schumacher took part in the exhibition "Deutsche Kunst" organized by Willem Sandberg at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, after 45 years. For the first time after the war, contemporary art from Germany was shown abroad. From 1955, Schumacher was known for his first exhibitions and prizes; his participation in the 29th Venice Biennale in 1961 and the awarding of the Guggenheim Award (National Section) as early as 1958 document his international breakthrough.
In 1959 he was a participant of the Documenta II in Kassel. From 1958 to 1960 he held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Emil Schumacher was a member of the German Artists' Association between 1961 and 1972. From 1966 to 1977 he was a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.
He died in 1999.

On August 30 is the birthday of

Evelyn De Morgan (Mary Evelyn Pickering), English painter born in 1855, whose works were influenced by the style of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. She was a follower of Pre-Raphaelist Edward Burne-Jones. Her paintings exhibit spirituality; use of mythological, biblical, and literary themes; the role of women; light and darkness as metaphors; life and death; and allegories of war.
She was educated at home and started drawing lessons when she was 15. On the morning of her seventeenth birthday, Evelyn recorded in her diary, "Art is eternal, but life is short…" "I will make up for it now, I have not a moment to lose." She went on to persuade her parents to let her go to art school. At first they discouraged it, but in 1873 she was enrolled at the Slade School of Art. She was granted a scholarship at Slade which entitled her to three years of financial assistance. However, since the scholarship required that she draw nudes using charcoal and she did not care for this technique, she eventually declined it.
She was also a pupil of her uncle John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, who was a great influence on her works. Beginning in 1875, Evelyn often visited him in Florence where he lived. This also enabled her to study the great artists of the Renaissance; she was particularly fond of the works of Botticelli. This influenced her to move away from the classical subjects favored by the Slade school and to make her own style.
In August 1875 Evelyn sold her first work Tobias and the Angel. Her first exhibited painting, St Catherine of Alexandria was shown at the Dudley Gallery in 1876. In 1877, Evelyn exhibited two works at Dudley Gallery (for sale) and is invited to exhibit at the first Grosvenor Gallery exhibition in London. She continued to show there her paintings thereafter.
She died in 1919.

On August 31 is the birthday of

Kiyokata Kaburagi (鏑木 清方), pseudonym of Kaburagi Kenichi, a Nihonga Japanese artist born in 1878 in the Kanda district of Tokyo, and the leading master of the bijin-ga genre in Taishō and Shōwa period.
In 1891, young Kaburagi was sent to become a disciple of ukiyo-e artists Mizuno Toshikata and Taiso Yoshitoshi. His first job was as an illustrator for Yamato Shinbun, a Tokyo newspaper founded by his father.
Kaburagi initially made his living as an illustrator, producing frontispieces called kuchi-e, illustrating the titles of popular novels. His works were highly praised by noted author Kyōka Izumi, who insisted that his novels be illustrated by Kaburagi. However, Kaburagi's first and foremost interest was in painting. In 1901, he helped create the Ugokai (烏合会), an art group dedicated to reviving and popularizing the bijin-ga (images of beautiful women) genre. When the government-sponsored Bunten exhibitions were started in 1907, Kaburagi began to paint full-time, winning several prizes.
In 1917 together with Hirafuku Hyakusui, Matsuoka Eikyu, Kikkawa Reika and Yuki Somei, he helped found the Kinreisha, a Nihonga association training promising young artists, including Kawase Hasui. When Watanabe Shōzaburō started an export woodcut print business, he needed many talented artists to make print designs appealing to western audiences. Kaburagi's group became a recruiting center for Watanabe. Kaburagi organized exhibitions with works of his students and introduced his best students to Watanabe. Next to Watanabe himself, it was probably Kiyokata Kaburagi, who had the greatest influence on the development and promotion of the shin-hanga movement. Not only Kawase Hasui, but also Itō Shinsui, Shiro Kasamasu, Yamakawa Shuho, Torii Kotondo and Terashima Shimei were trained by Kaburagi and then introduced to Watanabe.
When Kaburagi had reached his late 40s, he was well established and a highly respected artist. In 1929 he became a member of the Imperial Fine Art Academy (Teikoku Bijutsuin). In 1954, he received the Order of Culture.
His house in Tokyo was burned down during the firebombing of Tokyo in World War II, and he relocated to Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, where he lived until his death in 1972.
