On August 1 is the birthday of

Isobel Lilian Gloag, british artist born in London in 1865 of Scottish parents from Perthshire.
She studied at St John's Wood Art School, the Slade and then in the studio of M.W.Ridley. She attended life class at South Kensington before travelling to Paris to study under Raphael Collin. Returning to London, she took a studio in Notting Hill, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1893 onwards. Her first exhibit at the Royal Academy was entitled A Raw Recruit. As well as painting romantic subject pictures reminiscent of Byam Shaw and Gerald Moira, she also was a consummate portraitist, illustrator and stained glass window designer. She also designed posters and produced flower paintings.
An article in the Magazine of Art 1902 (pp289-292) by James Greig, comments upon her paintings and illustrates seven (all in black and white) including such titles as 'Rosamond', 'The Miracle of the Roses', 'Rapunzel' and 'The Magic Mantle'. More titles are listed in Christopher Wood's Dictionary of Victorian Painters ('The Choice', 'Bacchante', 'A Legend of Provence'), whilst Simon Houfe's Dictionary of 19th Century British Book Illustrators lists her known graphic works.
She died in 1917.

On August 2 is the birthday of

Marg Moll, German sculptress, painter and author born in Mulhouse, Alsace as Margarethe Haeffner in 1884. Starting from the realistic representation, her style developed into abstraction.
She began her artistic training at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main, where she was already very interested in sculpture. In the 1890s she was a pupil of Hans Völcker. In 1905 she studied with the painter Oskar Moll, whom she married a year later. Together the couple moved to Berlin and worked in the studio of Lovis Corinth, who made an oil painting of her in 1907. In addition, Marg Moll took anatomy courses at the Levin-Funke-Schule. In 1907 the couple moved to Paris. There, the two of them approached Henri Matisse. The artist pair was one of the most important people who convinced Matisse and helped him establish his own academy, the Académie Matisse. In her "Memoirs of Matisse" she described in a lively way the working situation in the "Académie".
After the First World War, she moved with her husband to Breslau, where Oskar Moll had accepted a call to the State Academy of Arts and Crafts. August Endell furnished the apartment and the spacious studio with modern furniture.
Marg Moll created a varied sculptural work. In doing so she was influenced by the sculptors Alexander Archipenko, Constantin Brâncuşi and Ossip Zadkine. In 1928 she again worked in Paris as a student of Fernand Léger. There she became a member of the Groupe in 1940 and exhibited with Robert Delaunay and Albert Gleizes.
Her sculptural and painterly oeuvre became more and more abstract. In 1932 the Breslau academy was closed and the artist couple Moll moved first to Düsseldorf. In 1943 the Molls had left Berlin because of the increasing bombardment and moved to Brieg in Silesia.
After the Second World War and after the death of her husband (1947), Marg Moll developed her style further. From 1947 to 1950 she stayed in Wales and met with Henry Moore in London. In 1952 she returned to Dusseldorf and began to organize lectures in Germany and abroad. Her work is characterized by reduced, linear bronzes, and expressive wood sculptures.
She died in Munich in 1977.

On August 3 is the birthday of

Maria Katarina Wiik, Finnish painter born in Helsinki in 1853.

In 1881, she painted a series of small paintings with a more psychological atmosphere including minute details. In spring 1889, she returned to Paris with her friend, the painter Helene Schjerfbeck to work among others with Puvis de Chavannes. In 1883-1884, they painted in England and then in 1889 in St Ives.
Her painting Out into the World won a bronze medal at the 1900 World Exposition and was included in the 1905 book Women Painters of the World.

He then moved on to the studio of Pierre Rivalz. In 1772, he began to exhibit copies of works by Antoine Rivalz and Pierre Subleyras, as well as portraits. In 1778, he won the Grand Prix of the Academy with The Murder of Philip, father of Alexander the Great. In 1779, he began a stay in Rome, where he met Joseph-Marie Vien, director of the Académie de France in Rome, who welcomed him, and then Jacques-Louis David, by their common friend, Toulouse sculptor Bernard Lange. On December 27, 1783, he was appointed director of the Académie de Montpellier, replacing Jacques Gamelin. In his production of this period stands the striking portrait of Anne Raulet, widow Gastambide. In 1786, on the death of Pierre Rivalz, he returned definitively to Toulouse. He produces many portraits and genre scenes in the manner of Greuze. The Revolution provided him with subjects like, in 1790, The Feast of the Federation, and in 1793 The death of Marat. He received the young Dominique Ingres, then student of the Academy of Arts. After 1800, Roques joined the views of David, which is manifested by his Nativity of the Virgin in the basilica of the Daurade. He became the first representative of neoclassicism in Toulouse.
