"Conquista / Conquest" © George Christakis

"Después de la lluvia / After the Rain" © George Christakis

On August 7 is the birthday of

Lucien Hervé (born László Elkán), French photographer born in Hungary in 1910.
He arrived in Paris in 1929. Attracted first by painting, music and fashion, he began photographing in 1938 for Marianne Magazine. An active activist in the CGT and the Communist Party, of which he was twice excluded in 1938 and 1947, in keeping with his convictions, in 1940, after his escape from the Hohenstein prison camp, he joined the ranks of the Resistance and the National Movement of Prisoners of War and deported, under the pseudonym of Lucien Hervé. Close to the post-war French humanist school, to which Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis also belonged, the career of Lucien Hervé took a decisive turn after meeting with Le Corbusier in 1949. Photographer appointed by the architect until death of the latter in 1965, Lucien Hervé was then recognized as one of the greatest architectural photographers. He collaborates with the architects Alvar Aalto and Oscar Niemeyer, he is known for his beautiful images of Chandigarh, Brasília or Thoronet. But he also photographed the major Parisian sites, from the UNESCO headquarters to the pyramid of the Louvre. Among his last photographs are those of his Parisian apartment. During his career of sixty years he has had numerous publications and exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the world.
He died in 2007.

On August 8 is the birthday of

George Christakis, Greek photographer and photomanipulator born 1988 in Heraklion, Crete.
He moved to Athens to study Public Administration, Panteion University of Social and Politican Sciences. During the second year of his studies, his interest in photography or in pictures in general raised. He started save some money and bought his first DSLR camera. Soon he started looking what all that buttons do, by shooting and trying, almost alone.
After some time sharing his shots in Internet, he realized that taking some shots it’s not what he really liked. He had pictures in mind that he couldn’t make them with just shooting with a camera. So his next step was pretty clear; he needed to learn image processing. He started searching some software and that he could start using for making his own dreamlike images. He did search for some techniques but he didn’t find he was exactly looking for. It was a really difficult stage. After spending some weeks he started creating his first picture. He was pretty excited, not because of the result but he realized that he had the chance to create what he had in mind. When he shared his first creations on Flickr people raised their interest, and after enough images he had his first interviews and book appearances came.
He usually creates pictures with some moody, strange environments, maybe and unusual colors. He suffer from color blindness, therefore he can’t really see the true colors. In the past he used to work only with black and white pictures. Now he's trying the colors as well, hoping that he won’t do something excess.
