Laura Ball es una notable artista estadounidense nacida en 1972 que vive y trabaja en San Diego, California.
Obtuvo una Licenciatura en Ciencias de la Universidad de California (1995, Davis) y un Máster en Bellas Artes de la misma Universidad (2004, Berkeley)
Desde hace varios años Laura ha venido creando coloridas e intrincadas composiciones utilizando básicamente acuarelas y grafito, en las que los elementos principales son los animales. La artista se vale de ellos para explorar el subconsciente y plasmar su preocupación por cuestiones medioambientales y conservacionistas.
Ha recibido numerosos premios y becas, y expuesto en galerías de Estados Unidos e internacionalmente. Su obra se encuentra en importantes colecciones privadas y públicas, incluidas las recientes adiciones al Museo de Arte de Denver y el Museo de Arte del Condado de Los Ángeles (LACMA).

"Árbol del conocimiento / Tree of Knowledge"

El árbol del conocimiento se basa en el mito persa del árbol Vaq Vaq, que incorpora animales y humanos que crecen en sus ramas y dispersan el conocimiento y la información. Su versión presenta enredaderas y ramas que se desplazan por toda la página y terminan en jirafas, leopardos y muchas otras criaturas. Ball dice "Esta pieza es realmente la culminación de todo aquello en lo que estoy trabajando"
Vaq Vaq o Vak Vak es un árbol mítico cuyas ramas terminan en cabezas de diferentes animales. Estas cabezas hablan. Según la leyenda, uno de estos árboles informó a Alejandro Magno de su temprana muerte. El árbol está representado en miniaturas mogoles y persas.

Tree of Knowledge is based on the Persian myth of the Vaq Vaq tree, which has animals and humans growing out his branches and disperses knowledge and information. Her version features vines and branches that scroll across the entire page and end in giraffes, leopards and numerous other creatures. Ball says "This piece is really the culmination of everything I'm working on"
Vaq Vaq or Vak Vak is a mythical tree in which the limbs terminated in heads of different animals. These heads talked. According to the legend, such a tree informed Alexander the Great of his early death. The tree is depicted in Mughal and Persian miniatures.

Creo que aunque algunos de los temas puedan ser tristes, intento presentarlos con una luz hermosa y esperanzadora, como que hay una manera en la que puedan vivir para siempre.»

«Los grandes gatos han sido mi amor durante más tiempo. Leopardos, tigres y pumas son los animales más hermosos que puedo imaginar. Me fascinan sus ojos, amplios y grandes. Me encanta verlos moverse, correr, saltar, escalar... son ágiles y elegantes. En el zoológico, me quedo en sus recintos la mayor parte del tiempo.»

En su serie de pinturas "Mandala", Ball teje imágenes de especies en peligro de extinción en forma de bucles, que representan un proceso cíclico de fallo humano y autoevaluación. Nos invita a meditar sobre la belleza y fragilidad de la criaturas con las que compartimos el mundo y a reflexionar sobre las fallas ocultas dentro de nosotros que amenazan su supervivencia.

Laura Ball is a remarkable American artist born in 1972 who lives and works in San Diego, CA.
BS from the University of California (Davis, 1995) and MFA from the University of California (Berkeley, 2004)
For several years, Laura has been creating colorful and intricate compositions using basically watercolors and graphite, in which the main elements are animals. The artist uses them to explore the subconscious and express her concern for environmental and conservationist issues.
He has received numerous awards and scholarships, and exhibited in galleries in the United States and internationally. His work is held by important private and public collections, including recent additions to the Denver Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

«Within the subconscious, our faults and fears, shortcomings and struggles, manifest in corporeal form and appear in dreams either as monsters or as encounters that threaten our survival. We journey inward in these dreams, crossing the thresholds and boundaries of our mental landscape until we reach the core of the psyche. It is in this realm that life-saving and sustaining battles unfold, and the monsters we encounter change before us as the definition of evil and good moves from black-and-white to shades of gray. The primal nature of our internal impulses and their dream-world expressions are given the freedom to unfold in a place where moral weight and the laws of physics are suspended, and acts of aggression, violence and sexuality serve as productive steps towards conquering our Jungian “shadow” and slaying the monsters that hold us back from a healthy progression in our daily lives.» Artist Statement (2010)

«Large cats have been my love for the longest time. Leopards, Tigers, and Cougars are the most beautiful animals I can think of. I am fascinated by their eyes – wide and large. I love to watch them move, run, jump, climb…they are limber and graceful. At the zoo, I stay at their enclosures the longest.»

In her series of “Mandala” paintings, Ball weaves images of endangered and extinct species into looping forms, representing a cyclical process of human failure and self-evaluation. She invites us to meditate on the beauty and frailty of our fellow creatures and to ponder the hidden flaws within ourselves that threaten their survival.

«With the detail I use, these large pieces take a long time to make and are physically demanding for a couple of months. So, that alone will make the work interesting to view in person. I think even though some of the subject matter can be sad, I tried to present it in a hopeful and beautiful light, that there is a way they can live forever.»
