Johan Abeling es un pintor holandés nacido en 1953 en Emmen. Su obra se caracteriza por la utilización del esfumado (sfumato), una técnica que consiste en la superposición de varias capas de pintura, suavizando tonos y contornos, creando un efecto de luz difusa y filtrada. Esta técnica fue aplicada por primera vez por Leonardo da Vinci en el s. XV, y Abeling la utliza para crear atmósferas misteriosas en sus pinturas.

«Me inspira mucho la obra del pintor alemán Caspar David Friedrich, cuyas pinturas tienen una cualidad gloriosa y exaltada que me parece bastante mística y sobrenatural. Estudié en la academia de arte de Groningen, que enseñó realismo con el método tradicional hasta los años setenta. Me siento afortunado de haber sido formado por profesores carismáticos como Matthijs Röling y Wout Muller, que tuvieron una influencia grande y duradera en mi obra. Durante mi estancia en la academia hubo una gran exposición en el Museo de Hiperrealistas y Fotorealistas de Groningen que tuvo un gran impacto en mí. A pesar de sentirme atraído por este estilo artístico, siempre he querido liberarme de la temática estrictamente fotográfica para manipular ambientes y atmósferas, y crear mi propio mundo visual.»

«Mi trabajo consiste en crear una atmósfera, en jugar con la composición y la luz, la sensación atemporal que esa atmósfera puede evocarme mientras trabajo. Mis pinturas tienen sus propias personalidades, sus propias historias y emociones. Uno también puede verlas como un momento de respiro en un mundo turbulento donde casi no hay tiempo para la contemplación. Pero también hay una cualidad desorientadora en el silencio.»

«Mi obra se interpreta a menudo como Realismo Mágico, que se caracteriza por un sentido de pesimismo, alienación, melancolía e inquietud. El realismo holandés tiene una larga tradición de realismo mágico, comenzando en el período entre las dos guerras mundiales con artistas como Carel Willink, Pyke Koch y Dick Ket. Aunque mi visión del mundo no es tan negativa como la de los artistas antes mencionados, las atmósferas austeras en mis pinturas indican mis sentimientos de malestar sobre cómo vemos (o evitamos ver) este mundo.»

«A veces temo que hayamos perdido el sentido de ser parte de la naturaleza, que ya no tenemos ojos para su belleza y poder curativo. En este mundo agitado donde casi no hay tiempo para la contemplación, espero que mis pinturas añadan un sentido de conexión con la misteriosa magnificencia y la serenidad restauradora de la naturaleza.»

Johan Abeling is a Dutch painter born in 1953 in Emmen. His work is stands out for the use of sfumato, a technique of overlapping several layers of transparent paint and softening tones and outlines into one another so the look of diffuse and filtered light is created. This technique was first applied by Leonardo da Vinci in the 15th century and Abeling uses it to create mysterious atmosphears in his paintings.

«I’m highly inspired by the work of the German painter Caspar David Friedrich, whose paintings have a glorious and exalted quality that seems quite mystical and unearthly to me. I studied at the art academy in Groningen which taught realism in the traditional method until the 1970s. I feel fortunate to have been coached by charismatic teachers
such as Matthijs Röling and Wout Muller, who had a great and lasting influence on my work. During my time at the academy, there was a large exhibition in the Groningen Museum of Hyperrealists and Photorealists which had great impact on me. Despite being attracted to this art style, I’ve always wanted to be free from strictly photographic subject matter to manipulate environments and atmospheres in order to create my own visual world.»

«My work is about creating an atmosphere, playing with composition and light – the timeless feeling that atmosphere can evoke for me while I’m working. My paintings have their own personalities, their own stories and emotion. One can also see them as a moment of respite in a turbulent world where there is almost no time for contemplation. But there is also a disorienting quality in the quiet.»

«My work is often interpreted as Magical Realism, which is characterized by a sense of pessimism, alienation, melancholy, and uneasiness. Dutch Realism has a long tradition of Magical Realism, beginning in the period between the two World Wars with artists such as Carel Willink, Pyke Koch, and Dick Ket. Although my outlook on the world isn’t as negative as those that the abovementioned artists’ held, the austere atmospheres in my paintings indicate my feelings of unease about how we see (or avoid seeing) this world.»
