Este es el tercer post (1, 2) de la miniserie dedicada al pintor y dibujante estadounidense Tom Palmore, cuyos retratos animalistas parecen hechos por encargo de sus modelos. Junto con la habitual reseña biográfica de la primera parte, acompaño esta selección de imágenes con algunos textos del artista hablando sobre su obra.
This is the third post (1, 2) of the mini-series dedicated to the American painter and draftsman Tom Palmore, whose animal portraits seem to have been commissioned from his models. Along with the usual biographical review in the first part, I accompany this selections of images with some texts of the artist talking about his work.

Tom Palmore es un pintor estadounidense nacido en 1945 en Ada, Oklahoma.
Durante más de 35 años ha pintado retratos de animales con reverencia por sus modelos y gran maestría técnica. Sus retratos ultrareales de animales al óleo y acrílico ofrecen una yuxtaposición única y a menudo cómica, de literalidad técnica y contexto surrealista e imaginativo.

«Tomo mis propias fotos (soy un fotógrafo regular) o compro fotos de fotógrafos de la vida silvestre, como Weaver Lily que es dueño de Friday, Saturday, Sunday (un restaurante en Filadelfia), o de un hombre en Santa Fe. Weaver sabe de perspectiva e iluminación. Le digo lo que estoy buscando, y él me envía las fotos por correo electrónico. Hablamos de ellas, y él las imprime y me las envía por Federal Express.
Trabajo a partir de una serie de fotos sobre un tema. Cuerpo, cabeza, etc., las pongo juntas y a veces cambio un poco de color. Hago muchos cambios en el cuadro. Pero no uso Photoshop.»

«El espacio de mi estudio influye en mi forma de trabajar, tanto en lo bueno como en lo malo. Mi último estudio tenía ventanas y tragaluces. Ahora en Edmund, Oklahoma, mi estudio está a unos 25 metros de la casa, con ventanas hacia el norte en una pared. Sólo tengo dos acres de tierra aquí, en lugar del rancho más grande. Estaré aquí por un tiempo, así que tendré que disfrutalo.
Empiezo a cierta hora de la mañana, de cinco a siete días a la semana. No debo sentir que tengo que ir a trabajar. Debo estar emocionado por aquello en lo que estoy trabajando. Es un ciclo de creatividad. Es importante que la iluminación sea la correcta. Uso tanta luz natural como puedo. Los estudios que más he disfrutado han tenido hermosos paisajes naturales tras las ventanas, bosques a ambos lados de la propiedad. Eso es importante para mí. No sólo tiene un efecto físico sino también psicológico.»

«Ingres es un pintor fabuloso. Magritte tiene ingenio y humor, pintura directa, casi primitiva, contradicciones y cosas así, e imágenes inusuales. No soy tan fan del Dalí tardío, aunque me gusta su obra de los años treinta y cuarenta. Y Mel Ramos, un artista pop, que no está exento de controversia en relación con la liberación de las mujeres, debido a sus chicas en hamburguesas, o chicas en Velveeta (un tipo de queso procesado estadounidense). Hay una cualidad surrealista en su trabajo con colores fuertes.
Entre los escritores con una voz distinta está Peter Dexter, de Filadelfia, que escribió Paris Trout. Y, por supuesto, Havard, Dessner, Lynch, Bill Shepard.»

«Cuando echo la vista atrás sobre mi obra, veo una progresión, pero cuando miro al futuro, no sé lo que será: es desconocido, así que hay inseguridad. Tienes que darte cuenta de que no hay garantías en la vida. Tienes que saber lo que es importante para ti y hacerlo.
Para ser tanto un buen maestro como un buen pintor, tienes que ser increíblemente disciplinado. Es fácil perder la perspectiva del mundo del arte.»

«Baso mis animales en personas. "La Duquesa de Wister", un chimpancé, tiene la nariz hacia arriba, y está mirando hacia abajo. Un poco mandona, con una importancia propia, más que segura de sí misma. Wister es el pequeño pueblo de Oklahoma en el que viví.»
«I base animals on people. The Duchess of Wister, a chimpanzee, has her nose turned up, and she’s looking down nose. Kind of bossy, with a self-importance, more than just self-assured. Wister is little Oklahoma town I lived in.»

Tom Palmore is an American painter born in 1945 in Ada, Oklahoma.
For more than 35 years, Tom Palmore has painted animal portraits with a reverence for his subject and a masterful technical prowess. His ultra-real portraits of animals in oil and acrylic offer a unique and often comical juxtaposition of technical literalism and surreal, imaginative context.

«I take my own photos—I’m an average photographer—or buy photos from wildlife photographers, like Weaver Lily who owns Friday, Saturday, Sunday [a restaurant in Philadelphia], or from a man in Santa Fe. Weaver knows perspective and lighting. I tell him what I’m looking for, and he’ll email photos to me. We talk about them, and he’ll print them and send them Federal Express.
I’ll work from a series of photos about a subject. Body, head, etc. and put them together, sometimes I change color a little bit. I do a lot of changes in the painting. But I don’t use Photoshop.»

«My studio space does influence how I work, both in good ways and in limitations. My last studio had windows and skylights. Now in Edmund, OK, my studio is about 25 yards from the house, with a wall of northern windows. I have only two acres of land here instead of the larger ranch. I’ll be here for a while so I’ll have to enjoy being in it.
I start at a certain time in the morning, five to seven days a week. I shouldn’t be feeling that I have to go to work. I should be excited about what I’m working on. It’s a cycle to creativity. It’s important that the lighting is right. I use as much natural light as I can. The studios I’ve enjoyed most have had beautiful natural scenery outside the windows, woods on both sides of property. That’s important to me. It has not only a physical but also a psychological effect.»

«Ingres is a fabulous painter. Magritte has wit and humor, direct painting, almost primitive, contradictions and things like that, and unusual images. I’m not so much a fan of the later Dali, though I like his work of the thirties and forties. And Mel Ramos, a pop artist, who’s not without controversy in relation to women’s lib, because of his girls on hamburgers, girls on Velveeta. There’s a surreal quality to his work with strong colors.
Among the writers with a distinct voice is Peter Dexter from Philly, who wrote Paris Trout. And, of course, Havard, Dessner, Lynch, Bill Shepard.»

«When I look back at my work, I see progression, but when I look at the future, I don’t know what it’s going to be: it’s unknown so there’s insecurity. You have to realize there are no guarantees in life. You have to know what’s important to you and do it.
To be both good teacher and painter, you have to be incredibly disciplined. It’s easy to lose perspective of the art world.»
