On August 25 is the birthday of

Ferruccio "Fucho" Musitelli, Uruguayan photographer and film director born in 1927 in Pando.
His work includes documentaries and short films about political and sporting events, tourism, urban issues and advertising. His major works include Dogomar Martinez vs. Kid Gavilan (1955, co-directed with Rodolfo Fabregat); The city on the beach (1961), on the coast of Montevideo; and Orientales al Frente (1971) on the political campaign of the then newly formed party Frente Amplio for the general elections of 1971.
As a teenager in Montevideo, he joined as an apprentice in the studio of an Italian painter friend of his father, where he worked as a decorator for five years. In this workshop he started in photography with a monochrome camera that used glass plates owned by his employer. After this experience he gave up painting and went on to train as a photographer.
He joined the Communist Party and went into exile in Italy in December 1977 where he worked as a documentary filmmaker, cameraman and director of photography. He returned to Uruguay in 1987.
He died in 2013

On August 26 is the birthday of

Dean Conger, American photographer born in 1927, in Casper, Wyoming. After nine years with the Denver Post, he joined the National Geographic Society as a staff photographer in 1959. His assignments took him all over Europe and Asia as well as across the United States.
Conger made more than 30 trips to what was then the Soviet Union, photographing for National Geographic magazine and for the National Geographic book Journey Across Russia. That effort won him a citation of excellence from the Overseas Press Club and the World Understanding Award from the University of Missouri in partnership with the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) and Nikon.

On August 27 is the birthday of

Man Ray (born Emmanuel Radnitzky), American modernist artist born in 1890, who spent most of his career in Paris, France. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. He was best known for his photography, and he was a renowned fashion and portrait photographer. Ray is also noted for his work with photograms, which he called "rayographs" in reference to himself.
He died in 1976.

On August 28 is the birthday of

Hideki Fujii (藤井 秀樹), Japanese photographer born in 1934.
Among his published works are the book Karada Kesho, with make-up artist Teruko Kobayashi. He was also responsible for the cover photography for the Steely Dan album Aja.
Fujii became interested in photography while in high school, one day after school he saw a fire in a nearby theater and took a photograph which was later published in the local newspaper, that made it decide to become a professional photographer. While studying photography in college, he worked as an assistant to the famous Shōtarō Akiyama, becoming his most successful disciple. After Akiyama learn fashion photography in the studio Fujin Seikatsu-sha, and commercial photography in the Nihon Design Center, Fujii found his great leap to fame with Max Factor campaign that hired him for a poster with model Hiromi Oka.
Fujii died on May 3, 2010 at the age of 75.

On August 29 is the birthday of

Wolfgang Suschitzky, photographer and cinematographer born in 1912 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, perhaps best known for his collaboration with Paul Rotha in the 1940s and his work on Mike Hodges' 1971 film Get Carter.
Andrew Pulver has described Suschtizky as "a living link to the prewar glory days of the British documentary movement." Steve Chibnall writes that Suschitzky "[developed] a reputation as an expert location photographer with a documentarist's ability to extract atmosphere from naturalistic settings." His photographs have been exhibited at the National Gallery, the Austrian Cultural Forum in London and The Photographer's Gallery, and appear in many international photography collections. He is the father of cinematographer Peter Suschitzky (born 1940) and classical musician and writer Misha Donat.
* He died in 2016.

On August 30 is the birthday of

Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky (Серге́й Миха́йлович Проку́дин-Го́рский), Russian chemist and photographer born in 1863. He is best known for his pioneering work in color photography of early 20th-century Russia.
The method of color photography used by Prokudin-Gorsky was first suggested by James Clerk Maxwell in 1855 and demonstrated in 1861, but good results were not possible with the photographic materials available at that time. In imitation of the way a normal human eye senses color, the visible spectrum of colors was divided into three channels of information by capturing it in the form of three black-and-white photographs, one taken through a red filter, one through a green filter, and one through a blue filter. The resulting three photographs could either be projected through filters of the same colors and exactly superimposed on a screen, synthesizing the original range of color additively.
Perhaps Prokudin-Gorsky's best-known work during his lifetime was his color portrait of Leo Tolstoy, which was reproduced in various publications, on postcards, and as larger prints for framing.
He died in 1944.

Today, August 31, is the birthday of

Helen Levitt, American photographer born in 1913. She was particularly noted for "street photography" around New York City, and has been called "the most celebrated and least known photographer of her time."
She dropped out of high school and went to work for a commercial photographer. There, she taught herself photography. While teaching art classes to children in 1937, Levitt became intrigued with the transitory chalk drawings that were part of the New York children's street culture of the time. She purchased a Leica camera and began to photograph these works, as well as the children who made them.
She associated with Walker Evans in 1938-39. She enjoyed early success. In July 1939, the new photography section of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City included Levitt's work in its inaugural exhibition.
In 1965 she published her first major collection, A Way of Seeing.
She died in 2009.

On August 24 is the birthday of

David Alexander "Alex" Colville, Canadian painter born in 1920 in Toronto, he moved soon to St. Catharines and Nova Scotia in 1929. He attended the Mount Allison University and graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. He painted in Yorkshire and took part in the Royal Canadian Navy's landings in southern France. He was in the army for two years, and because he was a fine-arts student, he was made a war artist in May 1944. He continued on to tours in the Netherlands and Germany, where he was also tasked with depicting the horrors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. On his return after the war, he taught at Mount Allison University between 1946 and 1963. He left teaching to devote himself to painting and print-making full-time from a studio in his home on York Street
He died on July 16, 2013.

Lavinia Fontana, Italian painter born in 1552. She is regarded as the first woman artist, working within the same sphere as her male counterparts, outside a court or convent. She was the daughter of the painter Prospero Fontana, who was a prominent painter of the School of Bologna at the time and served as her teacher. Continuing the family business was typical at the time.
Early in her career, she was most famous for painting upper-class residents of her native Bologna. She began her commercial practice by painting small devotional paintings on copper, which had popular appeal as papal and diplomatic gifts, given the value and lustre of the metal. In addition to portraits (the typical subject matter for women painters), she later created large scale paintings with religious and mythological themes which sometimes included female nudes.
She died in 1614.

On August 25 is the birthday of

Rufino Tamayo, Mexican painter and muralist born in 1899.
In Tamayo's work is there his rational, emotional, instinctive, physical and erotic force. His production express his own concepts of Mexico; he never followed the stream of his other contemporary Mexican painters (Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros), whose work, identified with different political views, Tamayo did not accept such proposal. It has often criticized the political and ideological stance of Tamayo. However, dozens of documents guarded in important public and private archives of Mexico, the USA and Europe show him as an artist identified with socialism, but respectful of the particularities of individual.
He was an artist always in search of new techniques. Along with Lea Remba created a new kind of graphical technique known as mixography; printing on paper which is added depth and texture. He died in 1991.

Dorothea Margaret Tanning, American painter, printmaker, sculptor, writer, and poet born in 1910. Her early work was influenced by Surrealism. She was also married to fellow Surrealist Max Ernst.
Apart from three weeks she spent at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art in 1930, Tanning was a self-taught artist. The surreal imagery of her paintings from the 1940s and her close friendships with artists and writers of the Surrealist Movement have led many to regard Tanning as a Surrealist painter, yet she developed her own individual style over the course of an artistic career that spanned six decades.
She died in 2012.

On August 26 is the birthday of

Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler, German sculptor born in 1802 in Munich. Heir to a long family artistic tradition, was the son of Klara Lutz and Franz Jakob Schwanthaler, from whom he received his first art lessons.

He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, performing numerous works for King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
His works in Munich are many and diverse. The Neues Palais is populated with his statues: the throne room has twelve gilt bronze figures of 10 feet tall. The sculptor, like his contemporary painters, received help from the students he trained. He died in 1848.

Rudolf Belling, German sculptor born in 1886
He studied at the School Steglitzer (1892-1901), also attending evening classes in drawing and modeling, as well as courses in anatomy for artists in Berlin veterinary school. In 1908 he founded with Emil Kaselow a workshop of sculpture, decorative and applied arts, which since 1909 received orders for theater of Max Reinhardt.
Since late 1918, after the proclamation of the Weimar Republic, he joined the revolutionary events, integrated into the Arbeitsrat für Kunst movement and the Novembergruppe. In 1919 he presented his famous sculpture Dreiklang (Triad). In 1931 he was appointed member of the Academy of Arts of Prussia. Since 1933 was boycotted and denounced as "degenerate", emigrating to America in 1935, where he received a teaching position in New York. In 1936 he went back to Germany, but the political circumstances forced him to leave his homeland again.
He died in 1972.

Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, British artist and designer born in 1833 closely associated with the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, who worked closely with William Morris on a wide range of decorative arts as a founding partner in Morris, Marshall, Faulkner, and Company. Burne-Jones was closely involved in the rejuvenation of the tradition of stained glass art in Britain.
Burne-Jones's early paintings show the heavy inspiration of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but by the 1860s Burne-Jones was discovering his own artistic "voice". In 1877, he was persuaded to show eight oil paintings at the Grosvenor Gallery (a new rival to the Royal Academy). These included The Beguiling of Merlin. The timing was right, and he was taken up as a herald and star of the new Aesthetic Movement.
In addition to painting and stained glass, Burne-Jones worked in a variety of crafts; including designing ceramic tiles, jewellery, tapestries, mosaics and book illustration, most famously designing woodcuts for the Kelmscott Press's Chaucer in 1896.
He died in 1898.

On August 29 is the birthday of

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, French painter born in Montauban in 1780.
Ingres is not, strictly, neoclassical or academic, but a strong advocate of drawing. He's a at the same time classic, romantic and realistic. Ingres is a clear exponent of romanticism in terms of themes, abstract line and intense color flat inks. Some of his works are part of the so-called "Troubadour Style," inspired by the Greek and Gothic aesthetic ideal, plus the miniatures in the Fouquet's Books of Hours. He also is an example of Orientalism, as many of his paintings, especially female nudes, are dominated by an unreal sense of the exoticism of the eighteenth century.
He died in 1867.
Sorel Etrog, Romanian-born (1933) Canadian artist, writer, and philosopher best known for his work as a sculptor.
Etrog's formal art training began in 1945. In 1950, his family immigrated to the Occupied Palestine, where beginning in 1953 he studied at the Institute of Painting and Sculpture in Tel Aviv. His first solo exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1958 earned him a scholarship at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York City. In 1959, a meeting with Toronto art collector Samuel Zacks led to Etrog's first Canadian solo exhibition, at Gallery Moos in Toronto. Leaving New York for Toronto in 1963, Etrog became a Canadian citizen.
Since the late 1950s, Etrog's work has been exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across Canada and internationally.
Etrog's work is represented in major capitals and cities allover the world.
He died in 2014.

Today, August 30, is the birthday of

George Minne, Belgian sculptor and illustrator born in 1866 in Ghent. He began his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and then continued in Brussels. Between 1914 and 1919 he taught life drawing at the Academy of Ghent. He belonged to the first group of artists ot the so called School of Sint-Martens-Latem, a village near Ghent where many Symbolist artists where settled, and where Minne died and is buried.
The emotional force of Minne's work was praised from 1886 by Belgian Symbolist poets such as Maurice Maeterlinck, Emile Verhaeren and Grégoire Leroy. In 1898, he performed what is considered his masterpiece, "La Fontaine des Agenouillés (The Fountain with Kneeling Boys)", of which several versions by his hand are preserved. He died in 1941.

Guy de Lussigny, French painter of the school of geometric abstraction born in 1929.
He started painting in 1950. At first a figurative painter, he soon followed in the footsteps of Mondrian and Malevitch. A pivotal encounter with Gino Severini, a founder of the Italian Futurist movement, occurred in 1955. Severini encouraged Lussigny to pursue his chosen path in geometric abstraction. The straight line, square format and colour come to dominate Lussingy's work. In 1956, he met the painter Auguste Herbin, a meeting which turned out to be equally important. Both artists took liberties with colour theory, thereby multiplying their possibilities. The gallerist Colette Allendy organised Lussigny's first individual exhibition in Paris in 1959. Thereafter he exhibited regularly in France, throughout Europe and Japan.
Guy de Lussigny's painting, pure and precise, conjures a poetic feeling. The square becomes, for the artist,'the most harmonious shape of human invention', while the line is 'a precise rendition of mathematical reasoning'. With these elements, Lussigny creates a pictorial language with the aim of achieving 'a kind of perfection'.
He died in 2001.

Tomorrow, August 31, will be the birthday of

Mária Balážová, contemporary Slovak artist born in 1956 in Trnava, Slovakia, former Czechoslovakia. Her practise as an artist is usually associated with new geometry, post-geometry and postmodern.
Balážová studied at the Academy of Muse Arts, Bratislava and Magister of Arts degree received in 1984. Balážová is also known as a teacher at the University of Trnava - since 1997.
Immediately at the beginning, Mária Balážová, created her own "personal mythology", emphasizing a snake motif in the geometrically stylised form of a cobra. This animal, which occupies an important position in world mythologies and religions, became the main motif of cycles of paintings, to which the artist gave the name Serpent Geometry. Balážová distinguished herself from classic Neo-Constructivism, outlined on subjectless combinations of shapes and colours, put together into geometric structures. Art theorists appreciate the „new significance“ she achieved by creating radically reductive forms.

Manuel Silvestre Montesinos, better known as Manuel Silvestre de Edeta, sculptor born in Liria, Valencia, in 1909.
He began working in the workshop of artistic marble of his uncle. Years later, he studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia.
Valencia City Council awarded him with the Prize Senyera in 1963. His drawings are close to French Impressionism and early Cubism. His sculpture has many similarities to the art of the Renaissance, while his terracotta have influences of Greek art.
Worshiped the female body, and also the figure of the mother and the daily scenes, with the peasant farmers as the protagonists. He remained active until almost the day of his death in 2014.
