On February 2 is the birthday of

Enrique Simonet Lombardo, Spanish painter born in 1866.
Apparently his first vocation of childhood was religious studies, but he abandoned it to devote himself to painting. He also attended the workshop of Bernardo Ferrándiz Bádenes, forming part of the Malaga school of painting.

Taking advantage of his stay Simonet traveled throughout Italy, visited Paris several times and in 1890 he made a tour of the Mediterranean. He also traveled to the Holy Land, where he painted his monumental work Flevit super illam; work for which he received numerous medals including Madrid in 1892, Chicago in 1893, Barcelona in 1896 and Paris in 1900. On February 4 is the birthday of

Carlos Alonso, Argentine painter, draftsman and printmaker born in 1929. Though he was a Social realist in his early career, he is best known as a New realist. Beef is a common element in his work.
At the age of fourteen, he entered the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes where he studied under Sergio Sergi in drawing and engraving, Lorenzo Dominguez in sculpture, and Bernareggi Francisco and Ramón Gomez Cornet in painting. At the National University of Cuyo, he studied with Lino Enea Spilimbergo.
He received his first award in 1947. In 1951, he won first prize at the Salon of Painting in San Rafael, the North Hall in Santiago del Estero, and drawing at the Salon del Norte Tucumán. In 1953, Alonso exhibited at the Gallery Viau of Buenos Aires, then traveled to Europe where he exhibited in Paris and Madrid.

On February 5 is the birthday of

Sarah Goodridge, American painter born in 1788, who specialized in portrait miniatures. She was the older sister of Elizabeth Goodridge, also an American miniaturist.
At an early age, she began drawing and showed an aptitude for art. Women's educational opportunities were limited at the time and where Goodridge lived, so she was essentially a self-taught artist.
In 1820, she went to live with her sister Eliza in Boston and began receiving lessons and painting miniature portraits of exceptional quality. Her work continued to improve and she earned enough from commissions to support herself and her family for several decades. Her paintings were exhibited in Boston and Washington D.C.. After her eyesight failed in 1851, she retired from painting and settled in Reading, Massachusetts.
Among Goodridge's most interesting and personal works is a miniature portrait of her own bared breasts, entitled Beauty Revealed, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
She died in 1853.

On February 6 is the birthday of

Julio Antonio (Antonio Rodríguez Hernández), Spanish sculptor born in 1889.
His first sculpture classes were received at the Ateneo de Tarragona, then going to the workshop of the sculptor Feliu Ferrer Galzeran in Barcelona. But it was when he moved to Murcia, where he made his first sculpture Unhealthy Flores, destroyed later by himself.
At age 18 he moved to Madrid, pensioned by the Provincial Council of Tarragona. There Julio Antonio worked in the studio of Miguel Blay, one of the most important sculptors at that time in Madrid. While recognizing the great teacher who was Blay, decides to leave and undertakes few trips through Spain with his friend the painter Miquel Viladrich Vila, with whom he rode his first workshop. In 1908 he creates his first major work Mary, the Gipsy, which already shows his great personality.
He died in 1919.

Today, February 7, is the birthday of

Ethel Carrick Fox, Australian painter, the wife of painter Emanuel Phillips Fox and a major artist in her own right born in 1872.
Carrick studied at the Slade School. She married E. Phillips Fox in 1905 and moved to Paris. She exhibited at the Salon D'Automne, Royal Academy London, Australian Art Association, Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, as well as at solo exhibitions and dual shows with her husband's work.
She travelled extensively from 1920–1940, and lobbied Australian public gallery directors and curators to buy her husband's works. During the 1920s she was recommended by the Atelier Grande Chaumiere as a private teacher of still life painting in Paris, and included a number of Australians and Americans in Paris amongst her students.
Carrick died in Melbourne in 1951.
