Paul Kaptein [Escultura]

The wooden sculptures of Paul Kaptein, artist who lives in Perth, Australia, are strangely disturbing.
Made with laminated glued wood, the panels slip and slide, creating their own holes which exasperate the gaps in the fabric of the universe.
«My work is broadly concerned with the agency of the present moment. By sampling various cultural and temporal trajectories, I’m exploring the notion of the now as a remix of past and future potentialities. This facilitates a renegotiation of perceptual truths resulting in an expression of things not quite truth, yet not quite fiction.
Central to this is the underlying theory of emptiness (Śūnyatā). Often considered a void, Śūnyatā offers endless possibility.»

«The Zen view is that the now, the present moment, is the only portion of time there is, and we find that hard to grasp because we see portions of time in increments. In Zen everything is in the present moment whereas from a Western standpoint we're generally thinking about the future, or about the past - say the party you went to last week. So you're projecting forward or from the past but you're never actually in the moment.»

With a lack of wood that can be carved in WA, Kaptein uses strips of wood glued together. When carved, the technique offers visible contours and the opportunity to inject spaces. While these spaces impart a gap, a silence or emptiness, disrupting the flow of the eye across the work, they also reference the pixellations and artefacts of digital media.

Kaptein says the medium is one he consciously avoided but it proved to be a major turning point in his career. «Being from the country (Nannup), I'd resisted the urge to incorporate anything that might identify me as 'rural' and wood was the first thing to avoid. Tractor parts second.»
But while creating a work in resin for Sculpture by the Sea in 2011, and frustrated by the tedious method of mould making and casting, he began hammering a piece of wood with a chisel and suddenly the stars aligned.

«I had never attempted woodcarving and had no idea what I was in for," he says. "Lots of googling later, I learnt more - and that's an irony too, that you have to go to the internet to find out about such an old art form.»

«Woodcarving as a process is slow and generally in opposition to the current need for immediacy, it is also an ancient craft so I'm juxtaposing that to contemporary concerns of technological intervention—ancient and modern collide in a way. The glitch effect also ties into the notion of Emptiness by undermining the solidity of material.»
