Catherine Abel [Pintura / Painting]

In the work of the Australian artist Catherine Abel, Cubism, Art Déco, Art Nouveau, Post-Impressionism and Italian Renaissance converge. The result of this amalgamation is materialized in feminine portraits full of light and color, geometrically constructed landscapes and delicate still lifes that reveal a remarkable mastery of drawing and painting technique. Here you have a selection of her work, biographical data, and reflections of the artist taken from some interviews.

Catherine Abel
(North Queensland, Australia, 1966-)

Catherine con su obra "Espíritu del transporte" / with her work Spirit of Transport

"Bodegón con uvas / Still Life With Grapes", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 30 x 40 cm.

"Cisne negro / Black Swan", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, Colección privada / Private Collection (Sydney)

"Gracia / Grace", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 112 x 82 cm.

Me pregunté si podía ejecutar 10 pinturas seguidas.

"Verdor / Viridity", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 102 x 102 cm.

St. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a German writer, composer, philosopher, Benedictine abbess and visionary, and left behind a great legacy of creative gifts, one in particular – ‘Viriditas’ or ‘greening power’. She talked of “the exquisite greening of trees and grasses” and “earth’s lush greening.” She says that all of creation and humanity in particular is “showered with greening refreshment, the vitality to bear fruit”. Clearly creativity and greening power are intimately connected here. This painting is reminiscent of the striking foliage and lush green colours of my childhood growing up in the North Queensland tropics.

"Composición mirando al este / Composition Looking East"
Óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 191 x 80 cm.

"La vie boheme / Vida bohemia / Boheme Life"
Óleo sobre lino sobre panel / oil on linen on board, 40 x 40 cm.

«As the natural evolution of painting moves me away from stylised forms with sharp edges and into a more softer realism I couldn’t but help, if only for sentimental reasons, revisit the past again here in this painting – my past rooted in the works of Tamara de Lempicka, Jean Paul Gaultier’s corseted past, the past lives of the bohemians on the Left Bank in Paris between the wars – woven together as one.»

"La vida vuelve a crecer a su alrededor / Life Begins to Grow Around Her Again"
Óleo y pan de oro 23 k sobre lino / oil and 23ct gold leaf on linen", 102 x 73 cm.

"Bodegón con pluma de codorniz / Still Life With Quail Feather", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen

"Peonia", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 76 x 56 cm.

Catherine trabajando en "Chica de verano" / at work with Summer Girl

Catherine Abel is an Australian artist born in 1966 in North Queensland.
In her figurative paintings she combines the sleek, stylised geometry of the Art Déco period with the clarity, richness of colour, and depth of light of the Italian Renaissance Masters. Her works are powerfully seductive compositions of beauty, elegance, strength and grace.
Self-taught, Abel began painting professionally after moving to Paris in 2000. Influenced greatly by European art and history, she immersed herself in her painting, rapidly building her reputation as a fine art painter.
She has exhibited in Australia, France and the USA and is a sought-after portraitist. She has been a finalist in the Archibald, Sulman and Portia Geach Portrait Prizes, and her works are featured in private collections worldwide.

"Chica de verano / Summer Girl", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 150 x 150 cm.

«A lot of people are painting the female form. They’re often beautifully rendered with a plain background. I’m bringing another dimension into the background with the strong cubist influence. I love Picasso and the act of breaking down images-it becomes another side of my mind. There is a strong design element harking back to art déco and nouveau. I also love the work of French designer Edgar Brandt. He produced the beautiful wrought Iron lace work and door grates in Europe during the 1920’s.»

"Maebh con una canasta de membrillos / With A Basket Of Quinces", óleo / oil, 2020

«Whilst at school, I always had an affinity with the artists living in Paris, particularly the cubists and surrealists. But no one in my family had a direct influence on me in this way. Although, I did happen to take ballet at the age of five and loved Anna Pavlova and that whole period of the 1920’s.»

«I never knew my father, but the little I did find out was that he had immigrated to Australia from Italy in the 1960s and worked as a cane farmer. I later found out he was quite creative and loved making things from wood. He was also half Italian so, perhaps it’s in my blood!»

"Venus de Rosebud / Venus of the Rosebud", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 120 x 61 cm. Blog

Yo no soy diferente.»

«This is a Symbolist painting and there is insightful meaning behind the imagery. From the pearls and grapes to the very colour of the background the painting is rich in symbols. Without us even realising, the expression on her face reaches into our psyche and deeply connects with the archetype of Venus we hold there. She is the Roman goddess of love and beauty, portrayed so powerfully in many great paintings (Botticelli’s Birth of Venus for one). Over many centuries artists have sought to capture her power, passion and beauty in paint. I am no different.»

"Amapolas cubistas / Cubist Poppies", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 122 x 92 cm.

"Soñadora del opio / Opium Dreamer", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 2008

«I had an idea of how I wanted to paint but I’d never really seen the style and subject matter until I saw a painting from the 1920s by the Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka. It was the most beautiful piece of art I had ever seen and I said to myself I’m going to paint like that one day! It was over 10 years later that I finally picked up a brush and began.»

«I always had this dream of living and painting in Paris. I went on a holiday in 1997 and met a French guy who came over to Australia the following year after he finished his studies. In 2000 we moved to Paris. He had a really good job offer there and said that he would help me establish myself as a painter. Although I had made art all my life I had only made a few paintings. It was really confronting – did I even have any talent? So I basically set myself a target. I wasn’t sure if I had what it took to have some sort of congruency. I asked myself if I could execute 10 paintings in a row. I basically spent a huge amount of time at the Louvre and then would go back to my apartment and paint.»

"Bodegón con café y té / Still Life With Coffee and Tea"
Óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 56 x 46 cm.

«This series of still life paintings are a result of integrating what I learnt over the course of six weeks at the Florence Academy of Art (March/April 2016) where I was taught to work from life under natural light using the tradition of the masters of the past, and translating nature in a way that is both anatomically accurate and artistically beautiful.»

"Una espía en la casa del amor / A Spy in the House of Love"
Óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 137 x 112 cm.

"Su belleza / The Beauty of Her", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 112 x 91 cm., 2003

«The creative process starts with sketches and ideas then a photo shoot with a model.  I use fabrics and props and often we improvise and if I’m lucky I get something that inspires me. From there I work until I have the final sketch of the figure but often don’t decide on the background until much further into the painting. I don’t like to spend too much time figuring everything out – I like to let the winds of inspiration guide me along the way.»

"Dorando el lirio / Gilding the Lily", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 102 x 71 cm.

"Flores pintadas / Painted Flowers N° 1", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 97 x 36 cm., 2000

«Every single painting I do it has to be the best I've ever done. Is almost like a compulsive need to get it absolutely perfect and in that the inspiration of creating beauty, and the idea of what is beauty for me, means everything.»

"Retrato de / Portrait of Annette B. Woloshen", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 122 x 110 cm.

«For me the success of evolving as an artist is not being affraid to experiment. You think about skin tone... How much skin tones I've painted over the years? And every single time I sit down to mix the palette of colors is never the same as I did yesterday. Is almost like I'm working on instinct. Maybe that's where the evolution comes from.»

Born in Mexico City in 1963, Moises Levy is a lifelong resident there.
In 1982, when he began his studies in architecture at Universidad Iberoamericana, his appreciation of the natural relation between light and architecture was deepened. Subsequent travel to Boston, Paris and Venice served to illuminate the unbreakable bond between architecture and its relationship with light. It was this early interest in the qualities of light that lead Levy to photography, and as a counterpoint to his work as an architect he has now been drawn to landscape work.
"I'm an established architect who lives in Mexico City, love all graphic related works. I produce Fine Art Work since 1990. I like to produce long exposure images, but also all kind of art. I work with all kind of equipment, digital Sonys, PhaseOne, Alpas, Hasselblads, Rolleis and pinholes ( I believe I have become a Collector :-))) I print my images on Platinum Palladium and Photogravures because I believe the ultimate print is very important as an art object."

"Maternidad / Maternity", acrílico sobre tabla / acrylic on wood, 35 x 40 cm., 2013

A figurative artist, he began painting after he lost his job as a clerk in a sex shop in 2012.
His aesthetic approach, reminiscent of Pop, starts with the intent to entertain or make people smile, to explore and examine in depth the problems and events that currently plague our world, whether ecological or social; his irreverent stripe became his distinctive style. His themes are stolen childhood, anti-militarism, climate change, ecological disasters and human evolution, with an interested eye ranging from our past history to the near future, filtering everything with a good dose of irony and sarcasm.

For some time now, this surprising comparison between the head of an equine and the foot of a dancer has been circulating in the nets. Beyond the curious and more than evident morphological similarity, both photos are very good, so here you have images of the original works and some information about their authors.

Incredibly powerful and sensuous, the large black-and-white image of a horse’s body is as arresting as it is beautiful. It demands full attention in any surroundings and asks the viewer to consider the grace of the noble equine body.
