Gracias a esta nueva entrevista de Shirley Rebuffo, nos acercamos a la obra del artista uruguayo Luis Mello, en cuyas pinturas de carácter figurativo y naturalista no es difícil detectar la reconocida influencia de maestros de la luz y la figura como Joaquín Sorolla o Anders Zorn.
Thanks to this new interview by Shirley Rebuffo, we approach the work of Uruguayan artist Luis Mello, in whose figurative and naturalistic paintings it is not difficult to detect the recognized influence of masters of light and figure such as Joaquín Sorolla or Anders Zorn.

Luis Mello es un pintor uruguayo nacido en Montevideo en 1954.
Comienza sus estudios de dibujo y pintura con Sergio Curto y Esteban Garino en 1971, y un año más tarde ingresa como bocetista ilustrador en Publicitaria Gallardo, trabajando al mismo tiempo para otras agencias de publicidad.
En 1975 recibe el primer premio en los bocetos para las Medallas Conmemorativas del Sesquicentenario de los Hechos Históricos de 1825. En 1982 obtiene el primer premio en el Salón de Pintura del Banco de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay.
A partir de 1992 expone en forma permanente en Galería de la Ciudadela Montevideo y Punta del Este.
En 1996 participa en importante exposición colectiva en la sede de la Organización de los Estados Americanos de Buenos Aires.
En el 2000 participa en la exposición colectiva internacional "The Art Festival for World Peace" en el Seul Art Center (Rep. De Corea).
Actualmente dicta clases de pintura y dibujo.

Shirley Rebuffo: ¿Cómo descubriste tu pasión por la pintura?
Luis Mello: Fue de siempre.
SR: Tomaste clases son Sergio Curto, un gran naturalista que manejaba una rica paleta, y con Esteban Roberto Garino, excelente acuarelista. ¿Qué recuerdos y enseñanzas te quedaron de esa época?
LM: Fue muy enriquecedor lo que me aportaron estos maestros. Las bases para iniciarme en esta carrera, tanto en lo técnico como en los consejos como maestros.

SR: ¿Cómo definirías tu arte y con qué materiales prefieres trabajar?
LM: Naturalismo (luminismo). Prefiero trabajar con óleo.
SR: ¿Qué temáticas son las que más te gustan?
LM: La figura humana y el paisaje.
SR: ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta o estimula de tu trabajo como docente?
LM: Transmitir mis conocimientos y ver los resultados en los alumnos

Mello conjuga, en una vertiente tradicionalista por excelencia, un sentir asociado al deleite visual que conduce a la calma y a la contemplación.
Ejercitando la perspectiva tradicional, maneja con destreza una paleta rica en vibraciones. Su búsqueda lo conduce a intensificar el efecto de la luz, otorgando a la realización cromatismos que ejercita con fuerza y que le permiten definir las composiciones con amplia solvencia.
Es singular la estructura de sus realizaciones, a través de las cuales Mello se presenta como un artista detallista y por lo cual su obra adquiere un carácter veraz, un despliegue de naturaleza y autenticidad, logrando de este modo efectos sorprendentes.

SR: ¿Notas influencias tuyas en los pintores más jóvenes?
LM: Trato de no influenciarlos.
SR: ¿Sientes admiración especial por algún artista en particular?
LM: Son varios, entre ellos: John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Philip de László, Peder Severin Kroyer, Joaquín Sorolla.
SR: ¿Dónde encuentras la inspiración?
LM: En la luz sobre las variadas formas de la naturaleza.

LM: En llegar a ser inspiración para futuros artistas.

Luis Mello
Luis Mello is a Uruguayan painter born in Montevideo in 1954.
He began his studies of drawing and painting with Sergio Curto and Esteban Garino in 1971, and a year later he joined "Publicitaria Gallardo" as an illustrator sketcher, working at the same time for other advertising agencies.
In 1975 he received the first prize in the sketches for the Commemorative Medals for the Sesquicentennial of the Historical Events of 1825. In 1982 he was awarded first prize at the Painting Salon of the Banco de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay.
From 1992 he exhibits permanently in the Gallery of the Ciudadela Montevideo and Punta del Este.
In 1996 he participates in an important group exhibition at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Buenos Aires.
In 2000 he participates in the international group exhibition "The Art Festival for World Peace" at the Seoul Art Center (Rep. of Korea).
He currently teaches painting and drawing.

Shirley Rebuffo: How did you discover your passion for painting?
Luis Mello: It was always.
SR: You took classes with Sergio Curto, a great naturalist who handled a rich palette, and with Esteban Roberto Garino, an excellent watercolorist. What memories and teachings did you have from that time?
LM: What these masters gave me was very enriching. They gave me the basis to start in this career, both technically and in their advice as teachers.

SR: How would you define your art and what materials do you prefer to work with?
LM: Naturalism (Luminism). I prefer to work with oil.
SR: What themes do you like the most?
LM: Human figure and landscape.
SR: What do you like the most or what stimulates you most about your work as a teacher?
LM: Transmitting my knowledge and seeing the results in my students.

Mello combines, in a quintessentially traditionalist vein, a feeling associated with visual delight that leads to calm and contemplation.
Exercising traditional perspective, he skillfully handles a palette rich in vibrations. His search leads him to intensify the effect of light, giving the work chromatisms that he strongly practices, allowing him to define the compositions with wide solvency.
The structure of his creations is singular, through which Mello presents himself as a detailed artist and through which his work acquires a truthful character, a display of nature and authenticity, thus achieving surprising effects.

SR: Do you notice your influence on younger painters?
LM: I try not to influence them.
SR: Do you feel special admiration for any particular artist?
LM: There are several, among them: John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Philip de László, Peder Severin Kroyer, Joaquín Sorolla.
SR: Where do you find inspiration?
LM: In the light on the various forms of nature.
