Levon Biss, Proyecto Microescultura [Macrofotografía]

No hace mucho Mafa Alborés presentaba en su blog "La voz del animal invisible" un artículo sobre los retratos de insectos de Levon Biss. Allí se indicaba que la técnica utilizada es lo que en el medio se conoce como "fotografía de juntura", y que el propio Levon explica más abajo. Sobre estos acercamientos hiperdetallados de las criaturas observadas, apuntaba Mafa:

"...del mismo modo en que Swift situaba a Gulliver en diferentes perspectivas metafóricas de la humanidad (la simplificación liliputiense de las formas humanas aparentemente bellas pero de bajas y mezquinas motivaciones en contraste con la grandeza llena de innumerables defectos visibles de los gigantescos habitantes de Brobdingnag) las imágenes obtenidas por Biss ofrecen, además de un eficiente recurso expositivo y de estudio, una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el concepto de escala, y cómo ésta forma parte de los criterios para definir lo extraordinario y lo monstruoso, de hecho uno de los recursos más antiguos para la creación de criaturas fantásticas."

Gracias a la amabilidad de Levon, les dejo aquí mi propia selección junto con información y datos sobre el complejo sistema de construcción de estas magníficas imágenes.

Not long ago Mafa Albores posted in his blog "The voice of the invisible animal" an article about the portraits of insects by Levon Biss. There he pointed that the technique used is what is known in the media as "joint photograph", explained below by Levon himself. About these hyperdetailed approaches of these creatures, Mafa wrote:

"... Just as Swift placed Gulliver in different metaphoric perspectives of mankind (the Lilliputian simplification of seemingly beautiful human forms but low and petty motives, in contrast to the grandeur filled with countless visible defects of the gigantic inhabitants of Brobdingnagian) the images obtained by Biss offer, besides an efficient exhibition and study resource, an opportunity to reflect on the concept of scale, and how it is part of the criteria for the extraordinary and the monstrous, in fact one of the oldest means to create fantastic creatures."

Thanks to the kindness of Levon, I leave here my own selection along with information and data about the complex system of construction of these magnificent images.

Levon Biss es un fotógrafo británico nacido en 1975 con sede en Londres. Su obra se centra en el mundo del deporte, capturando la pureza y emoción del movimiento, tanto en grandes producciones como trabajos personales documentales. 

Levon ha fotografiado campañas para marcas internacionales durante los últimos 18 años. Su trabajo ha aparecido en portadas de publicaciones como la revista Time, y ha producido un libro sobre el fútbol a nivel mundial titulado "Un amor / One Love".

Su pasión por la naturaleza y la fotografía se han reunido para crear "Microescultura", un estudio fotográfico único de los insectos con una ampliación extraordinaria. Para este último proyecto personal, Biss ha abordado el mundo de la macrofotografía, llevándolo a un nuevo nivel. Sus tomas capturan con un detalle asombroso la belleza del mundo de los insectos, imprimiéndolas en formatos a gran escala que ofrecen a la audiencia una inolvidable experiencia visual.

La actividad de realizar estas imágenes de insectos comenzó como un proyecto colateral, en su casa, y utilizaba bichos capturados por su propio hijo. Pero vertió toda su habilidad como fotógrafo y maestro de la iluminación en esas imágenes, y cuando las mostró al Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad de Oxford, nació el proyecto Microescultura, y sus especímenes se volvieron mucho más intrincados.

Seleccionando en la masiva colección de insectos del museo, Biss escogió los especímenes más coloridos, con texturas más bellas y perfectamente preservados que se conservan en el museo, y se los llevó a casa para producir las imágenes.

«Cada imagen del proyecto Microescultura está creada a partir de cerca de 8000 fotografías individuales. El insecto pinchado en un alfiler es situado en el set de un microscopio adaptado que me permite un completo control del espécimen posicionado frente a las lentes. Disparo con una cámara de 36 megapixels con un objetivo de microscopio 10x incorporado a través de lentes prime de 200 mm.

Fotografío al insecto en aproximadamente 30 secciones diferentes, dependiendo del tamaño del espécimen. Cada sección es iluminada de forma diferente con luces estroboscópicas para obtener la belleza microescultórica de cada sección particular del cuerpo. Por ejemplo, ilumino y disparo sólo una antena; una vez completada esta área, me muevo hacia el ojo y la configuración de iluminación cambia completamente para captar la textura y contornos de esa parte del cuerpo. Continúo este proceso hasta haber cubierto toda la superficie del insecto.»

«Debido a la escasa profundidad de campo que proveen esas lentes, cada fotografía individual sólo contiene un mínimo deslizamiento del foco. Para permitirme capturar toda la información que necesito para crear una imagen completamente enfocada, la cámara está montada sobre un riel electrónico que programo para que avance 10 micrones entre toma y toma. Para que te hagas una idea de cuánto es esto, un cabello humano promedio tiene alrededor de 75 micrones de ancho. La cámara se mueve lentamente a lo largo del insecto creando un conjunto de imágenes que tienen, cada una, un mínimo plano enfocado. A través de un proceso de varios apilados, hago esas imágenes planas creando una única en la que todo el insecto está completamente enfocado.

Repito este proceso en todo el cuerpo del insecto, y una vez que tengo 30 secciones completamente enfocadas, las junto en Photoshop para crear la imagen final. De principio a fin, la fotografía final me puede insumir alrededor de 3 semanas entre tomas, procesamiento y retoque.»

Desde el 27 de Mayo, y hasta el 30 de Octubre, tiene lugar una exhibición de la obra de Levon. El Museo de Historia Natural, que recibe alrededor de 650.000 visitantes al año, cuenta con una colección de insectos de relevancia internacional, con más de 7 millones de especímenes recogidos en cada país del mundo, incluidas algunas de las regiones e islas más remotas. 

La colección de entomología también tiene un significativo valor cultural e histórico, ya que contiene los más antiguos especímenes, y miles de insectos recolectados por biólogos y exploradores victorianos pioneros, como Charles Darwin y Alfred Russel Wallace.

La muestra se despliega en la sala principal del museo, rodeada de una maravillosa arquitectura neogótica. Las impresiones fotográficas de las Microesculturas más grandes miden hasta tres metros y rodean al visitante. Presentadas junto con los pequeños especímenes, esta inmensa transformación de escala ofrece una experiencia visual única.

Levon Biss is a British born London-based (1975) photographer, concentrates on the world of action and sport, capturing the purity and emotion of movement in both large productions and personal documentary work.

Levon has been shooting campaigns for international brands for the last 18 years.  His work has graced the covers of publications such as TIME Magazine and he has produced a best selling book on the global game of soccer titled ‘One Love’.

Biss’s passion for nature and photography have now come together to create Microsculpture, a unique photographic study of insects in mind-blowing magnification.  For his latest personal project, Biss embraced the world of macrophotography and has taken the genre to a new level.  His photographs capture in breathtaking detail the beauty of the insect world and are printed in large-scale formats to provide the audience with an unforgettable viewing experience.

This capture of insects started as a side-project in his home, and featured bugs caught by his own son. But he poured his whole skill as a photographer and light master into those images, and when he showed them to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Microsculpture was born and his specimens got a LOT more intricate.

With his pick of the museum’s massive collection of insects, Biss picked some of the most colorful, beautifully textured, and perfectly preserved specimens the museum had on hand and took them home to produce these images.

«Each image from the Microsculpture project is created from around 8000 individual photographs.  The pinned insect is placed on an adapted microscope stage that enables me to have complete control over the positioning of the specimen in front of the lens.  I shoot with a 36-megapixel camera that has a 10x microscope objective attached to it via a 200mm prime lens.

I photograph the insect in approximately 30 different sections, depending on the size of the specimen.  Each section is lit differently with strobe lights to bring out the micro sculptural beauty of that particular section of the body.  For example, I will light and shoot just one antennae, then after I have completed this area I will move onto the eye and the lighting set up will change entirely to suit the texture and contours of that part of the body.  I continue this process until I have covered the whole surface area of the insect.»

«Due to the inherent shallow depth of field that microscope lenses provide, each individual photograph only contains a tiny slither of focus.  To enable me to capture all the information I need to create a fully focused image, the camera is mounted onto an electronic rail that I program to move forward 10 microns between each shot.  To give you an idea of how far that is, the average human hair is around 75 microns wide.  The camera will then slowly move forward from the front of the insect to the back creating a folder of images that each have a thin plane of focus.  Through various photo-stacking processes I flatten these images down to create a single picture that has complete focus throughout the full depth of the insect.

I repeat this process over the entire body of the insect and once I have 30 fully focused sections I bring them together in Photoshop to create the final image.  From start to finish, a final photograph will take around 3 weeks to shoot, process and retouch.»

From May 27, until October 30, it takes places an exhibition of Levon's work. The Museum of Natural History receives around 650,000 visitors a year, has an internationally-important insect collection contains more than seven million specimens drawn from every country in the world, including specimens from some of the most remote regions and islands. 

The entomology collection also has significant cultural and historical value, containing the world’s oldest pinned insect specimen and many thousands of insects collected by pioneering Victorian explorers and biologists such as Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.

On show in the main court of the Museum, surrounded by stunning Neo-Gothic architecture, the largest of Microsculpture’s photographic prints measure up to three metres across and surround the visitor. Seen alongside the tiny insect specimens themselves, this huge transformation of scale offers a unique viewing experience.
