Abordamos hoy la obra de la estadounidense Bridgette Guerzon Mills. Es una pintora, artista de instalaciones y creadora de una amplia variedad de libros de artista en los que la naturaleza resulta clave como inspiración, soporte y componente, hasta el punto de que algunas piezas se concretan y tienen sentido en el propio entorno natural del que proceden los materiales utilizados.

Today we approach the work of the American Bridgette Guerzon Mills. She is a painter, installation artist and creator of a wide variety of artist's books in which nature is key as inspiration, support and component, to the point that some pieces take shape and make sense in the very natural environment from which the materials used come from.

Finalizando "Guardianes de vida", una pieza de arte textil sobre el problema del colapso de las colonias, instalada en Lake Roland's Art, en la ruta hacia Baltimore.

Finishing up "Keepers of Life", a textile art piece about Colony Collapse Disorder that will be installed at Lake Roland's Art on the Trail in Baltimore.

Bridgette Guerzon Mills es una artista cuya obra incorpora diversas técnicas y materiales, como fotografía, pintura, encáustica, así como fibra, textiles y otros materiales recuperados. Sus obras han sido publicadas en revistas y libros, y su trabajo está presente en colecciones tanto en Estados Unidos como a nivel internacional. Actualmente reside en Towson, Maryland, con su familia.

Como artista de técnicas mixtas, la encáustica es un medio versátil que le permite crear profundidad en capas y le sirve para explorar más a fondo tanto la forma como el significado. Combina la fotografía con la encáustica para crear un puente entre dos mundos, el real y el reconstruido. El lienzo se convierte en una superficie de múltiples capas que habla tanto al sentido visual como al táctil.  

Sus instalaciones al aire libre, a menudo creadas con materiales reciclados o procedentes de la recolección, se centran en cuestiones medioambientales y pretenden implicar y educar al público en estos temas.

Diario pandémico / Pandemic Journal

"Cuando Maryland empezó confinarse y a cerrar las escuelas, saqué mi diario y me propuse escribir en él todos los días. Marcando, registrando y siendo testigo de lo que estábamos viviendo como familia, como comunidad, como país. Lo hice durante unos días, pero luego ya no quise escribir. Era demasiado.

No estaba teniendo tiempo en el estudio, como mencioné en posts anteriores. Un día decidí entrar y al menos limpiar. Mientras amontonaba algunas fotos, me sentí impulsada a tomar una imagen y añadirle palabras. Así empezó mi diario pandémico.

Tenía que ser sencillo, ya que no necesitaba cargar con otra cosa exigentes. La paleta es limitada. Las palabras proceden de un texto encontrado en un libro: un viejo cuento de hadas de Grimm que conseguí hace años en un mercadillo de la biblioteca."

"When Maryland first went into lockdown with the schools closing, I pulled out my journal set on writing in it everyday. Marking, recording, and witnessing what we were going through as a family, as a community, as a country. I kept it up a few days, but then I just didn’t want to write. It was all too much.

I wasn’t getting time in the studio as I mentioned in previous posts. One day I decided to just go in and at least clean up. As I piled up some of photos, I felt moved to take an image and add words to them. And so my pandemic journal began.

These had to be simple, as I did not need another demanding thing on me. The palette is limited. The words come from found text from one book- an old Grimm’s Fairy Tale that I got from a library rummage sale years ago."

"Mis pinturas de técnicas mixtas incorporan la riqueza de la pintura a momentos captados por mis fotografías, creando un puente entre dos mundos: el real y el reconstruido. Coloco capas de pintura y trozos de transferencias fotográficas, papeles o fibras para crear profundidad tanto en la forma como en el significado. El lienzo se convierte en una superficie de varias capas que habla tanto a los sentidos visuales como táctiles. Esta integración de diversas capas crea una conexión íntima que invita a la exploración."

Espíritus / Spirits

"Espíritus" incluye las palabras que había escrito en mi diario tras el fallecimiento de una de mis hermanas.

La primera página con texto dice:

"a veces 

creo que el viento 

es algo más que 

corrientes de aire"

La segunda página con texto dice:

"son los espíritus 

de los que he conocido

e incluso de otros

de mis propios desconocidos"

La tercera página con texto dice:

"espíritus que me recuerdan 

su presencia 

y la impermanencia de la vida"

"Spirits" includes the words i had written down in my journal after one of my sisters passed away.

The first page with words say:

"sometimes 

i think that the wind 

is more than just 

currents of air"

The second page with words say:

"it is the spirits 

of those i've known

and even others

of my own unknown"

Third page says:

"spirits reminding me 

of their presence 

and the impermanence of life"

Bridgette Guerzon Mills

Bridgette Guerzon Mills is an artist whose work incorporates a variety of techniques and materials including photography, paint, encaustic, as well as fiber, textiles, and other reclaimed materials. Her artwork and journals have been published in magazines and books and her work has been collected in the United States and internationally. She currently resides in Towson, MD with her family.

As a mixed media artist, encaustic is a versatile medium that allows her to create depth in layers and serves as a means for further exploration in both form and meaning. She combines her photography with encaustics to create a bridge between two worlds, the real and the reconstructed. The canvas becomes a multi-layered surface that speaks to both the visual and tactile sense.

Her outdoor installations, often created using foraged or recycled materials, focus on environmental issues and seek to engage and educate the public about these concerns.

"My mixed media paintings incorporate moments captured by my photographs with the richness of paint, creating a bridge between two worlds – the real and the reconstructed. I lay down layers of paint and pieces of photo transfers, papers or fibers to create depth in both form and meaning. The canvas becomes a multilayered surface that speaks to both the visual and tactile senses. This integration of diverse layers creates an intimate connection that invites exploration."
