Using the unexpected fluctuations of the medium, dindi. builds dreamlike images, in which there is no shortage of disturbing or even macabre elements. The decomposition of the figures, the reflections and symmetries, reconfigure environments and models, creating new balances. According to the artist, water, the only element that she can’t fully control, "brings a certain spontaneity in my work and also surrealism and alienation of reality."

Dindi van der Hoek (dindi.) is a photographer born in 1976. She studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy & the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. With her staged underwater photography, dindi. focuses on the disagreement and balance of the inner in the female psyche, emphasizing the archetypical mother and woman. Reflections, visual distortion and movement of water are important elements of her visual language. She expands on classical painting styles through a contemporary content. The image always contains a contradiction. What seems to be fairy-like aesthetics morphs into an image in which frustration and destruction prevail. As a viewer you are confronted with images that are both intimate & intimidating visualizing a battle between egos. dindi. both designs and makes the costumes and all attributes used in her photography her self, allowing her to fully control every detail of her work.

«After completion of my study Fine Arts at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam I began to specialise in staged photography combined with underwater photography. In fact I don’t call myself a photographer, rather an imaging artist.
My work is about duality and the search for inner balance.
I work referring to sketches of a concept that almost always is an answer to previous creations. I did a lot of drawing and painting in the past. In fact I have not changed very much in my method of working compared to the way I did during my painting period.»

«I work as a creative imaging artist and to that purpose I use photography as my medium. This medium is the last link to the final result. The approach is in fact equal to that of a painter. I also work in layers like painting in oil, I build up the image slowly. Either my studio or under water and finally make the finishing touch on the computer.
In the first stadium of the image I work with live models and each model gets her own unique costume, atmosphere and universe. There is some kind of undulation in the working process from the first idea to the final picture.
The creative part, the start of a new series, is the most intensive period within the process. Fortunately it does not take too much time, a couple of weeks at the most, or else I would perish.
The third phase is photo-shooting the models with the costumes and auxiliaries applied, followed by the underwater shoots, which are both completely technical and emotional processes of letting loose the original picture. The water takes over.
The last phase is the finishing on the computer in order to combine all the layers together to 1 image. In this process I try to control the influence of the water. It is always a battle within myself, searching for the right balance and thrill of the image.»

«At first glance the images have an aesthetically attitude which appear to be less friendly when observed more carefully. This dual momentum and paradox returns in all my work, every time in a slightly different appearance. Water reflections are an important element in my work and, in fact the only element that I can’t fully control. The water makes sure that both of the staged image and the surrealistic water reflections are in an interesting and fascinating new balance. Water brings a certain spontaneity in my work and also surrealism and alienation of reality.»

Mira Nedyalkova [Fotografía, fotomanipulación]

Mira Nedyalkova

"Autorretrato / Self Portrait", 2012 © Mira Nedyalkova

Me expreso a mí misma y mi vida interior.

Mira Nedyalkova is a Bulgarian photographer, photomanipulator, model and painter, living and working in Sophia.
«My photographs are not exactly photographs, my creations are somewhere in between paintings and photography». This is the way Mira Nedyalkova defines her work.
She started with drawing, and was also a model. In 2007 she discovered photography as a means to express herself and completely replaced painting.
«I started painting when I was a child. My education was related to painting. I’ve worked as a model for a long time. In 2006 I started working with photoshop. I found a way to create incredible images using the world's best photo editing software. I was inspired by the idea to be a painter and a photographer at the same time. «In my images I use pain as a beauty, erotic as a psychological way of life. I express myself and my intimate inner life. Indeed, the majority of my works are in the water, this of course is not accidental. From many points of view, for me the water is very suitable means to express what I carry in me and recreate my ideas.. It's really inspiring to me the water is my creation. The creation the life, the power...the water is filled with tremendous energy. It is the winner of pleasure and delight it gives life, but also poses a risk, threat, it can destroy us. I love the transparency and purity of water light and reflecting and transformations that is suffered in contact with another medium. For me the water is highly erotic element precisely because of the opposites that brings. Water is the one who quenches our  thirst and saves us. Lust for life of each of us, the thirst for love and the eternal struggle and attempt to erase, to dull to heal the pain, sadness, loneliness...»

«I want to show the relationship between beauty, joy, pleasure, erotic and pain, loneliness and death. The beginning and the end… by art…I think that there isn’t another way for finding peace, happiness and keeping balance in life…with my photos I want to say that we shouldn’t be afraid of pain. We have to know it, embrace it, to find the meaning of it…to realize that we probably even need it, in order to recognize life itself and it’s happiness. I have always thought about this even when I was a little girl…I have been through pain like everyone else, but who can really tell how big or small our pains are…big or small our happiness is…when at the end everything is connected.
I believe that pain is there for a reason. Even though sometimes we can’t see what good is in the situation, or even how any possible good could come from it, we have to believe that everything will be finally alright. Pain is a good teacher.»

«To me, eroticism is fundamental. Is there, existing, so I want to convey it in my photos, but connecting it with other elements such as pleasure, but also pain, sadness. To me, all those elements together are really powerful, they give us a meaning, give us life, give us the philosophy of our being. Basically, my photographs are pretty much this.»

«I always have the main idea in my head and I prepare very carefully for it. Usually, I have several ideas and at the beginning, I search for suitable clothes, objects for completing the scenes. I take a lot of photos and I choose the best photos at the end. I like to take photos in this moment when the model in motion when she doesn’t expect me - In such moment I capture beautiful photos.»

«I really love to work with Photoshop and I attach great importance to the post-processing of my photos. Largely, I think this is due to the fact that I have always painted… and with Photoshop in some kind of way, I’m getting closer to it again. I like to transform the photograph and partially distance it from the pure photography. I simply feel that I need to do it. Maybe because I have never been truly happy with myself as a painter. I also don’t have enough trust in myself as a photographer. The art that I create is a mixture between the two arts and the product is bringing me great satisfaction.»

«I have been inspired by many artists. The most inspirational photographer for me is Jan Saudek. The painter with the greatest influence on me is Egon Schiele.»

«Cezanne played an important role for me when I was a student and I was still painting. His work has been a great inspiration for me and by this time, my paintings were similar in technique and color combinations to his. My inspiration from Schiele has come at a later stage when I started to get inside the photography art and it continues until today. The influence of Schiele in my work is a lot more conscious and deeper. Here, we don’t refer to the technique and images he uses but to the emotions and feelings, his work is provoking in me. The art of Schiele made me look deep inside my soul and discover things that have not realized until this moment, and as a result, I started to express them through my photography.» (see references below)

«Another artist who I truly admire lately, and who inspires my work is Christer Karlstad. I will be also very happy to work with him. I like his sensitivity a lot, the love he has for animals and life, the love at all, which sees through his work and captures us with its enchantment and power. I think that we are a lot alike in the way we see life: power to love, striving to overcome the pain, loneliness and become one with the nature and life so we can feel real happiness.» (see references below)

Christer Karlstad

"Espectadores / Spectators", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 96 x 170 cm.

"Tronco / Trunk", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 160 x 100 cm., 2015

Artist's Statement
«The chosen operating space for all my paintings is long since established – a landscape where cities exist only as a distant memory and where the people and animals populating them are recognizable, yet alien. Where rules are unknown and where ambiguous narratives and hierarchies have been reshuffled. Depictions of realistic situations give way to a different agenda. My compositions revolve around a tableau where normality is challenged, replaced or altogether consumed by something else – something unknown. Symbolically charged yet intimate scenarios related to existence or existential paintings. Good or evil, comforting or disturbing, dead or only sleeping – these are not mysteries to be solved. In the questions themselves lay the answers.»
