Afifa Aleiby [Pintura / Painting]

The work of the Netherlands-based Iraqi artist Afifa Aleiby draws on a wide range of influences, from the Renaissance Art, Impressionism, Religious Icons or Social Realism, and through the female figure explores both everyday life, society and politics as well as pure aesthetic beauty and the play of shapes and colors.
Here you have a selection of her work, basically from 2010, in chronological order, a brief summary of her life based on the interview she gave to Art Breath, and some other texts related to some particular pieces.

Nada Shabout (3)

«In Rest, 2010, Afifa partakes in a conversation that reaches beyond the personal moment. She participates in an unresolved art historical engagement with the female nude that is equally a popular trope of Orientalism. Rest of 2010, thus, responds to a series of representations that includes, Eduard Manet’s controversial 1865 Olympia, which itself was a contemporary response to Titian’s 1538 Venus of Urbino, Goya’s 1797-1800 The Nude Maja and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres’ 1839 Odalisque with a Slave. Afifa’s reclining nude, however, lacks any of the luxuries associated with the previous works. The background has no decorative items or furniture. The nude is stretching cross a thin mattress on the floor. Fully nude with closed eyes, she neither confronts nor asserts. She is instead resting, al-luding to the hardship of her day. Her closed eyes particularly disinvite the gaze, which is further affirmed by the crouching, and almost ready to jump, cat facing the viewer. The cat, generally employed in art through the ages as a symbol of domesticity, fertility, lust, curiosity and independence, through her peculiar stance here acts as a protector as well.» Nada Shabout (3)

"Alas rotas / Broken Wings", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 75 x 70 cm., 2017

AA (2)

"Eva / Eve", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 150 x 60 cm., 2019

Afifa trabajando en su estudio / at Work in her Studio

Afifa Aleiby is an Iraqi artist who was born in the city of Basra, in the utmost southern part of Iraq. She took up her studies at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad while working as an illustrator for the Iraqi press, before leaving Iraq for the Soviet Union in 1974 to study and specialize in monumental art at the renowned Suikuv Institute in Moscow. Due to the political situation in Iraq, she was unable to return to her native country after the completion of her studies and decided to move to Italy and later back to Moscow, before settling in Yemen to work as a teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts in Aden, where she also illustrated children’s books and magazines. Aleiby has since been living and working in the Netherlands and continues to contribute to a great deal of cultural activities in support of the Iraqi and international democratic movement, in the struggle against terrorism, racism, war and dictatorship. Having not returned to her native country for 35 years, she has built a strong connection to every country she has lived in since leaving Iraq, both in a cultural and personal sense. Her connection to humanity and different cultures has led to solidarity transcending geographical and cultural borders becoming an important theme in her work. Bringing together different influences from Renaissance painting to religious icons and social realism, she uses the female figure as a recurring motif to reflect beauty, taste, politics and society. Millie Walton (4)

«Though much of Aleiby’s work deals with historical suffering, conflict and loss, the mood of each painting is set by distinct and varying colour palettes that pro-vide a metaphorical lens to guide our interpretations. In one painting of a woman sitting with a young boy between her knees, the warm tones of the room and fabrics indicate an intimate, domestic setting: a sense of home. Yet, the woman’s expression is cool and stern, whilst the boy appears distracted and uncomfortable, his gaze turned upwards and his legs restless. As with all of Aleiby’s work, we are directed away from the exterior image towards the layers of embedded subjectivity: the humanity. It is this sensitivity and depth that elevates the work beyond the purely visual so as to leave a powerful and resonating impression on the viewer.» Millie Walton (4)

"El regreso / The Return", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 120 x 80 cm., 2020

Afifa's interest in the arts has its roots in her family environment, both in the interest of several of her siblings in the arts, as well as in the large library in her home, which included foreign literature translated into Arabic and books by international artists. After her intermediate education, she moved to Baghdad with her mother, who together with her brother was her great support during the five years she studied at the Institute of Fine Arts.
There she was taught by a series of Iraqi professors, renowned artists with an outstanding artistic career, several of them graduates of European institutes (Rasool Alwan, Muhammad Ali Shaker, Muhammad Shaker Al Saeed, Miran Al Saadi, Sadiq Rabih, Rafeeh Al-Nasiri, Muhammad Mehr Al-Din, Muhammad Aref, Mahud Ahmed).

The great cultural openness that prevailed at the time had a significant effect on the development of her artistic production, especially during the time she worked as a painter for one of the most important and progressive leftist newspapers Tareek Al Shaab and New Culture Magazine, widely circulated among the Iraqi society in general, and in particular the leftist intellectual elite. Afifa was the first young woman to undertake journalistic work as an artist.
After finishing her studies in Moscow, she went to live in Rome with her husband, the Iraqi artist Jabr Alwan, and later to Yemen, where she worked as a teacher and witnessed the cruelty of life and the brutality of politics, seeing how the blockade to which some Arab regimes subject the country to punish the government, cause starvation of the population.
Today Afifa lives and works in the Netherlands. (2)

"Mi paraiso terrenal / My Earthly Paradise", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 105 x 125 cm., 2021

Thanks to the library of her brother Faisal, and publications on European artists, Afifa fell in love with impressionism and the work of contemporary artists, as well as French academics (David), the style of Ingres and Delacroix, Italians such as Botticelli, and also Russian artists such as Rabin, Vrubel and Vodkin, from the Soviet period. In Moscow she became acquainted with the art and humanism of the Italian Renaissance. Her studies there were like a new beginning, unlearning and relearning how to draw the human body, reconsidering the historical value of the arts, their role in interpreting and writing history through emotions and feelings, and the responsibility of an artist.

The political involvement of the artist, and its translation in her work, have to do with the ties she maintains with her country, that "umbilical cord" that links her to her native land keeping alive her fear and sorrow for the circumstances in which her compatriots live. Thus, Afifa captures in paintings her reaction to the suffering of the people at the hands of the dictatorial regime, her opposition "to what was being done to Iraqis and the nature of the terrorist machine that was crushing the lives of people and destroying all bonds of communication, friendship and love. That changed people and turned Iraq into a land of terror and cruelty". (2)

«My use of the feminist component as a medium to communicate my thoughts and feelings, was effective to create the worlds that I wanted to express through my art. I personally consider women to be the origin of everything, a pillar in life and a positive and beautiful element. Women were the ones behind all the movements of change from the beginning of time to the present day.
The female figure is a fundamental element for my art because it has all the capabilities in helping me relay what I want to say through it. It contains much meaning and multiple facets.
Most of my paintings have a specific meaning or idea behind them, but an idea does not necessarily mean that it is political or of social or educational dimension. There are other notions of artistic dimensions that I’ve researched. Sometimes colour is the concept, wanting to express its value or composition in a painting or it could be regarding light or even beauty and its varied meanings.» AA (2)

«At the first glance, Afifa’s work rattles the viewer with its intimacy. One cannot escape the uneasiness of entering a personal space. Afifa’s vibrant colors and the elegant lines of her figures are self-reflective. In response to her physical dis-placements, the space of the painting becomes her ultimate home. The figure is constant in her paintings, and is predominantly a woman in which Afifa identifies and explores malleability. This woman who is always the center of her paintings is pronouncedly autobiographical and negotiates Afifa’s life and emotions. As such, we can read the work as portraits representing different aspects and chap-ters in her journey and relationships. Collectively her oeuvre tells her story as it equally reflects on the state of humanity, and womanhood in particular. It negoti-ates her distance from Iraq, motherhood, isolations, displacement, love and pain, in vivid and saturated colors with sharp crisp lines.» (3)

Joaquín Torres-García, internationally recognized for his painting, also wrote a series of texts and books, some of them manuscripts, a lesser known aspect of his prolific oeuvre. In several of the writings in which he developed the main fundamentals of his doctrine, Torres-García drew the words, so that his language also took on a plastic form.

"La ciudad sin nombre / The City With No Name"

Diseños para "La ciudad sin nombre" / Designs for "The City With No Name"

In commemoration of the 140th anniversary of the birth of Joaquín Torres-García, the Torres-García Museum and the National Museum of Visual Arts held the joint exhibition "Ver, Sentir, Comprender (Seeing, Feeling, Understanding)", in which the collections of both institutions and also the various aspects of Torres-García's work; paintings, manuscripts and ideas.

«"Seeing, Feeling, Understanding" is made up of several cores that bring together books and paintings from the most important periods of the Uruguayan master's career. The Catalan period is represented by books such as El descubrimiento de sí mismo, Dialegs and Notes sobre art (The Self-Discovery, Dialogs and Notes on Art)", as well as classicist drawings, including a sketch of one of the murals Torres-García painted in Barcelona, while the New York period (1920-1922) includes watercolors with urban motifs of the great city.
The material corresponding to the Paris years (1926-1932) is a reflection of the influence he received from the avant-garde. At that time he drew several manuscripts, for example "Foi", "La peinture vierge" and "Passivite". The works "Composition" (1928), "Constructive Painting" (1928) and "Abstract Forms" (1929), as well as two series of drawings: "Drawing-Writing" and "Reason-Emotion-Reality".
The period after the artist's return to Uruguay in 1934 is profusely represented. Then he published some of his fundamental books: among others La tradición del hombre abstracto, Historia de mi vida, Lo aparente y lo concreto en el arte, La ciudad sin nombre and Universalismo constructivo, while the plastic contribution are two constructivist works: "Pintura constructiva" and "Arte Universal", both from 1943.
Seeing - Feeling - Understanding allows experts and the general public to get to know little-known aspects of the prolific artistic activity of a fundamental creator for national art.»

Diseños para "La ciudad sin nombre" / Designs for "The City With No Name"

The city is a ubiquitous presence in the life, work and writings of Joaquín Torres-García (Montevideo, 1874 - 1949). Beginning in 1917, in the process of joining the avant-garde, Torres-García took an original look at the modern city, from which he took the visual elements he needed to construct his own artistic language.
The drawings and watercolors that make up the exhibition "The Nameless City" bear witness to a process of abstraction and construction from the painter's point of view, which is particularly evident in his graphic work. This art of seeing, which is the sensitive foundation of the constructivism practiced by Torres-García from 1929 onwards, is also manifested as a peculiar view of the world in his metaphorical book "The Nameless City", whose original drawings are exhibited for the first time.

As a librarian, I have had to detach myself from concepts to reach logical conclusions on the subject. Books are objects in themselves, but they are considered not for the object they are, but, with some exceptions, for the ideas, stories or knowledge that are conveyed in their pages. The objectives that the author has set for himself are what will determine the achievement of his goals, the symbiosis of multiple possible combinations of different languages and communication systems. Its existence is at the intersections of engraving, photography, poetry, experimental narrative, visual arts, graphic design and publishing.

They have made a place for themselves in the collections of museums, libraries and private collectors. They have captured the interest of art historians and critics who write about art, and there are numerous programs of study in art schools devoted to the art of the book, giving way to new generations of artists who make books.

In its beginnings there were artists who have used this format to create narratives, dealing with difficult or emotional subjects, others consider it a different way of making the work of art available to a wider public than that allowed by galleries and museums. The multiplicity of languages allows for meaningful nodes to be handled. The most commonly used are: "form-sign-color", "concept-theory-archive", "word-writing-narrative", "vision-participation-utopia" and "perception-manipulation-sensation". The transformation is delimited only by the artist's imagination.

According to Robert Flynn, an artist book, "is a limited edition (usually unique), usually (mostly) hand-made, combining text with original graphics."

Several have become monumental interventions and others have become small sculptures that, despite their size, are still called books.

These "book-objects" are a physical experience that allows a social connection with the medium with individual and personal implications. As Peter Thomas said: "We make books that are works of art rather than books that are only literary vehicles".

Her childhood took place in the rural environment of Mataojo, near the border with Brazil. These early years had a direct impact on her artistic development. Duarte takes many elements from her childhood in Mataojo turning them into central motifs in her work.
