Este es el primero de un par de posts (el segundo aquí) que dedico a la obra de Allen Williams. Aunque también pinta, es un genial artista del grafito, que crea dibujos a lápiz e imaginativos trabajos de concepto para la industria del cine. Con un gusto especial por lo oscuro y lo sobrenatural, sus creaciones rezuman una inquietante belleza.
This is the first of a couple of posts - the second one here - that I dedicate to the work of Allen Williams. Although he also paints, he is a great graphite artist, who creates pencil drawings and imaginative concept works for the film industry. With a special taste for the dark and the otherworldly, his creations exude a disturbing beauty.

Allen Williams

Allen Williams es un artista estadounidense nacido en 1965 en Tennessee.
Desde una edad muy temprana el lápiz y el papel han sido un escape y un refugio para Allen. Conocido a nivel nacional e internacional desde hace más de 28 años, ha aplicado su talento a todo, desde ilustración para compañías de juegos y portadas de libros, hasta el trabajo de concepto para grandes películas y televisión. Su visión para tales proyectos abarca desde ilustración hasta el concepto y diseños de personajes y criaturas.
Su obra personal está sólidamente basada en la realidad, pero siempre fluye hacia aspectos sobrenaturales. Trabaja principalmente en grafito, gouache y óleos. Imágenes de varias capas surgen en su obra, en la que se cuestiona la fragilidad e inestabilidad de nuestra realidad aparentemente cierta. Los dibujos de Allen responden directamente a su entorno y utiliza experiencias y objetos cotidianos como punto de partida para muchas de sus piezas.

«Siempre me ha gustado dibujar, desde que tengo memoria. Tengo cuadros de monstruos que hice a los tres años y me siento como en casa con un lápiz en la mano. También trabajo en acrílicos, óleos y, en ocasiones, en digital ... pero todo siempre comienza con el dibujo. Fui a la universidad por unos años, pero me fui cuando empecé a dedicarme más a hacer ilustraciones que las tareas del curso. Me convertí en artista profesional independiente en 1988 y desde entonces he trabajado en muchas publicaciones, juegos y proyectos. Comenzando con TSR, la revista Dragon y más tarde avanzando en gráficos por ordenador, como en Magic: The Gathering and Rage.
En 2001, con la perspectiva de un niño a la vista, decidí ponerme serio. Renové mis esfuerzos, comencé a buscar mi propia educación autodirigida y construir una disciplina más sólida. Me permití obsesionarme con lo que amo hacer.»

«Comencé mirando libros de historietas y dibujando a partir de ellos cuando era joven. En la escuela mis influencias se convirtieron, y siguen siendo, John William Waterhouse, Williams-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Leon Gerome, Jules Bastien-Lepage, Maxfield Parrish, Frederic Leighton y Alphonse Mucha. Luego encontré a los pintores holandeses Hyeronimus Bosch (El Bosco) y Ter Borch y a otros cuyos cuadros eran pequeños en tamaño pero intrincados en detalles. Me encantan las obras de Hans Bellmer, John Jude Palencar, Frank Frazetta, H.R. Giger, Zdzislaw Beksinski y Andrej Dugin y Olga Dugina. También hay escultores que me encanta estudiar; Shifflet Brothers, SpiderLee y Tanoo Choorat, por nombrar algunos.
Me estoy dejando gente fuera, pero mi biblioteca es extensa y siempre estoy buscando pintores y escultores contemporáneos. Creo que tienes que mirar a tus contemporáneos para comprender el lenguaje visual actual y cómo se está aplicando, y luego decidir qué adoptar y de qué apartarte. Recuerda mantenerte fiel a tí mismo y hacer tu propio trabajo en todo lo que haces.»

«Esta pieza es parte de una historia mía más larga, "Los reyes de la tierra".
La historia gira en torno a una joven que ha aprendido a despertar a los gigantes de la Tierra; Los Trece Reyes. Doce de los reyes permanecerán a sus órdenes hasta que el decimotercer rey se levante para mandarlos a todos. Sin el conocimiento de los otros Reyes, ella ya había resucitado al decimotercer rey y lo había destruido, convirtiéndola en la Primera Reina de la Tierra.»
«This piece is part of a larger story of mine; The Kings of Earth.
The story revolves around a young girl who has learned how to awaken the giants of the Earth; the Thirteen Kings. Twelve of the Kings will remain in her command until the Thirteenth King arises to command them all. Unbeknownst to the other Kings she has already resurrected the Thirteenth and destroyed him making Her the First Queen of Earth.»

«En 2010 pasaron dos cosas importantes. Escribí, ilustré y publiqué una novela para adultos jóvenes llamada "La cocina de las brujas" para Little Brown y conocí a Guillermo Del Toro, quien me pidió que hiciera un trabajo de concepto de preproducción de la película "En las montañas de la locura" (que actualmente está en espera). Más recientemente, he realizado trabajos de concepto para "Pacific Rim" de Guillermo (ver más abajo), la película "Noé" de Darren Aronofsky y trabajo de portada de libro para TOR. En 2013 tuve el honor de recibir el Premio de Oro Spectrum para el arte de concepto.
Sigo dibujando la mayor parte del tiempo, me paguen o no... ocasionalmente escribo y ahora estoy empezando a pintar, otra vez.»

Allen Williams is an American artist born in 1965 in Tennessee.
From a young age a pencil and paper with an escape and a refuge for Allen. Now nationally and internationally known, for over 28 years Allen has applied his talents to everything from illustration for gaming companies and book covers, to concept work for major motion pictures and television. His vision for such projects ranges from illustration to concept work and creature and character designs.
His personal work has a strong basis in reality but always flows into otherworldly aspects. He primarily works in graphite, gouache, and oils. Multilayered images arise in his work, in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. Allen’s drawings directly respond to his surrounding environment and he uses everyday experiences and objects as a starting point for many of his pieces.

«I've always loved drawing for as long as I can remember. I have pictures of monsters that I did at the age of three and I feel most at home with a pencil in my hand. I also work in acrylics, oils and occasionally digital... but everything always starts with drawing. I went to college for a few years but left when I started doing more illustration than actual homework assignments. I became a professional freelance artist in 1988 and have worked on many publications, games and projects since then. Beginning with TSR, Dragon magazine and later progressing into ccg's such as Magic: The Gathering and Rage.
In 2001, with the prospect of a child coming into view, I decided to get serious. I renewed my efforts, began seek out my own, self directed, education and build a stronger discipline. I allowed myself to obsess on what I love to do.»

«I started by looking at comic books and drawing from those when I was young. In school my influences became and still are John William Waterhouse, Williams-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Leon Gerome, Jules Bastien-Lepage, Maxfield Parrish, Frederic Leighton, and Alphonse Mucha. I then found the Dutch painters Jheronimus Bosch and Ter Borch and the others whose paintings were tiny in size but intricate in detail. I love the works of Hans Bellmer, John Jude Palencar, Frank Frazetta, H.R. Giger, Zdzislaw Beksinski and Andrej Dugin and Olga Dugina. There are also sculptors that I love to study; the Shifflet Brothers, SpiderLee and Tanoo Choorat to name a few.
I am leaving people out, but my library is extensive and I am always looking at contemporary painters and sculptors. I believe you must look at your contemporaries to understand the current visual language and how it is being applied and then decide what to adopt and what to deviate from. Remember to stay true to yourself and make your work your own in everything you do.»

«In 2010 two major things happened. I wrote, illustrated and published a young adult novel called "The Witches' Kitchen" for Little Brown and I met Guillermo Del Toro and was asked to do pre-production concept work on the film "At the Mountains of Madness" (which is currently on hold). Most recently I've done concept work for Guillermo's "Pacific Rim" (see below), Darren Aronofsky's film "Noah" and book cover work for TOR. In 2013 I was honored to be the recipient of the Spectrum Gold Award for concept art.
I still just draw most of the time whether anyone pays me to or not... occasionally I write and now I am beginning to paint, again.»

«Estuve en San Diego Comic-Con (Convención Internacional de Cómics de San Diego) durante muchos años, pero de repente ese año decidí que solo mostraría un trabajo que era exactamente lo que me gustaba hacer y nada más.
