Técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 35,56 x 46,99 cm., 2011

The 1971 exhibition catalogue says that the painting
“is an attempt to portray the basic principles and ‘platform’ of our freedom fight. Here the message is ‘Unjust laws are to be disregarded. It is meet and just to break them’. This is the significance of the March of Dandi.”

The work was shown at the artist’s 1964 exhibition in Mumbai and at the 2016 “Quest for Cruzo” exhibition at Sunaparanta. In his curatorial essay, Ranjit Hoskote said about this painting:
"Here, da Cruz tunes the convergence of art, intellect and medicine to a hallucinatory intensity: he pictures the studio as a ward, and his paintings as medical progress charts. The rival claimants exerting their hold on the artist are, to his right, a nurse […] and to his left, a lively skeleton with a violin, clutching at his shoulder with a bony hand. Is the nurse Life, or Love, or Inspiration, or Stasis? Is the skeleton Death, or Art? Does sanity ossify, or is art fatal? This painting suspends us in a state of paradox, and refuses to offer us a simple Manichean choice between clear opposites."

It was part of Cruzo’s 1964, 1971 and 2016 exhibitions. The 1971 exhibition catalogue says that the painting
“makes blindingly clear the Mahatma’s rejection utter condemnation of partition. More than anyone else, he realised that it was a solution that was no solution. It was to him a deadly blow at India’s political unity.”

"La criada morena / The Nut Brown Maid"

"Allegorie de La nuit / Alegoría de La noche / Allegory of The Night", óleo / oil, 70 x 54,5 cm., 1891

"La comida funeraria / The Funeral Meal", óleo / oil, 125,5 x 177,5 cm., 1886

On August 20 is the birthday of

Joseph Crawhall III, English artist born in Morpeth, Northumberland, in 1861.
He was the fourth child and second son of Joseph Crawhall II and Margaret Boyd. Crawhall specialised in painting animals and birds.
He trained at King's College London before going to Paris to work with Aimé Morot in 1882. In the 1880s and 1890s, his work became associated with the Glasgow Boys. He was strongly influenced by the Impressionists, and, like them, his work was rejected by the Establishment, in his case in the form of the Royal Scottish Academy.
In the 1880s he travelled throughout Morocco and Spain, abandoning oil painting and moving to watercolours with a lighter palette.
Many of his works are viewable in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and in the Burrell Collection. He has less works because he is known to have destroyed those he was unhappy with.
He died in London in 1913.

On August 21 is the birthday of

Kalal Laxma Goud (కలాల్ లక్ష్మా గౌడ్, Kalāl Lakṣmā Gauḍ), Indian painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in 1940 in Nizampur, Medak district, Telangana.
He works in variety of mediums including etching, gouache, pastel, sculpture, and glass painting. He is best known for his early drawings that depict eroticism in a rural context, and also for the originality and quality of his etchings and aquatints.
His childhood was spent in a village environment where he grew up keenly aware, through firsthand observation, of rural tradition and craft. When he was a young boy he watched Andhra leather puppetry and the creation of terracotta ornamentation. He studied drawing and painting at the Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad. Goud went on to study Mural Painting under K.G. Subramanyan at the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Baroda from 1963 to 1965. It was at Baroda that Goud discovered his love of printmaking, and became a driving force at the university in building a strong and credible voice for the fine art print.
After graduation, Goud made the unlikely step of returning to his village of Nizampur. With the newly educated viewpoint of an urban sophisticate, the artist found himself attracted to the unselfconscious attitudes toward sexuality that contributed to the relaxed atmosphere of village life. This relaxed sexuality stood in stark contrast to the rigid sexual mores of the Indian middle-classes he had encountered in the cities.
Laxma Goud began to interpret his childhood memories of rural and tribal vivacity through an urban grid in which surreal, libidinal tones mingled with fantasy and poetry. He created masterful small paintings of village life in a palette of monochrome greys. He also drew in pen and ink, and his drawings and etchings from this period are an interesting combination of village nostalgia, the surreal, and the erotic. The artist is quoted as saying about this period of visual-erotic exploration, "We come from a culture which spoke openly about the man-woman relationship, about fertility. When it recurs in a contemporary context, why should anyone pull a face?"
By the 1970s Goud began to explore aquatint in his etchings and also more intensely sexual themes. But by the 1980s the artist seemed to return to more traditional roots, exploring various craft forms such as terracotta and reverse glass painting in a more subdued and decorative style.

On August 22 is the birthday of

Antonio Piedade da Cruz, also known as "A.P. d'Cruz" or simply "Cruzo", painter and sculptor born in the village of Velim, Salcete, Goa, Portuguese India, in 1895.
He joined Bombay's Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in 1916. Cruzo studied under Gladstone Salomon, M. V. Dhurandhar and Agoskar, and graduated in 1920. He went on to study in Europe, applied to the Berlin University of the Arts and won a scholarship and the status of "Master Student" (Meisterschüler). He studied there from 1922 under Arthur Kampf, Ferdinand Spiegel and Paul Plontke.
Cruzo caught the attention of the Portuguese Ambassador in Berlin when he, after a German newspaper described him as "Portuguese from India", asked the paper to rectify, insisting that he was "pure Indian". With the support of the Ambassador, Cruzo held his first solo exhibition in Lisbon in October 1925. He returned to India following a request by the Maharaja of Travancore.
Cruzo settled in Bombay and became well known as a sculptor and portrait painter both among Indian royalty and the expatriate elite. Among the people who sat for his portraits were Philip Chetwode, Louis Mountbatton, Lallubhai Samaldas and Purshottamdas Thakurdas.
His "Cruzo Studio" in Brabourne Stadium became an important meeting place, including for members of the Goa liberation movement. Despite Cruzo's entries with the rich and famous, his main work focused on poverty and social injustice as well as hard-working farmers and fishermen. He also painted colourful allegories and nudes.
A meeting with Mahatma Gandhi gave Cruzo fresh inspiration and from then onwards, political themes dominated his work, first the struggle for independence, partition and later the Bangladesh Liberation War and the Vietnam War. Cruzo died in 1982.
After years of oblivion, Cruzo's work is being rediscovered. In 2016, Ranjit Hoskote curated an exhibition of 16 oil paintings by Cruzo at the Sunaparanta, Goa Centre for the Arts and a website was set up to gather existing media and information about the artist.

On August 23 is the birthday of

Joseph Edward Southall, English painter born in 1861, associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.
A leading figure in the nineteenth and early twentieth-century revival of painting in tempera, Southall was the leader of the Birmingham Group of Artist-Craftsmen—one of the last outposts of Romanticism in the visual arts, and an important link between the later Pre-Raphaelites and the turn of the century Slade Symbolists.
A lifelong Quaker, Southall was an active socialist and pacifist, initially as a radical member the Liberal Party and later of the Independent Labour Party.
Southall was elected an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) in 1898 and Member in 1902. He became President of the Society in 1939 and stayed in this post until his death in 1944.
Southall painted a variety of subjects during his career, including mythological, romantic, and religious subjects, portraits and landscapes. He was known for his mastery of the colour red, the clean and clear light in his works, and for his paintings on the theme of Beauty and the Beast.
Southall's choice of medium was heavily informed by his Arts and Crafts belief that the physical act of creation was as important as the act of design. Aesthetically egg tempera provided the luminescence and jewel-like quality that had been so sought after by the Pre-Raphaelites (who never themselves perfected the technique), but it also gave him the opportunity to fashion his own materials by hand. To obtain the egg yolks required he even kept his own chickens.

On August 24 is the birthday of

Marion Bloem, Dutch writer and film maker born in 1952, in Arnhem, the Netherlands, best known as author of the literary acclaimed book Geen gewoon Indisch meisje (No Ordinary Indo Girl) and director of the 2008 feature film Ver van familie (Far from Family).
Bloem is a second generation Indo immigrant born into a family of four children. Her parents, Alexander and Jacqueline Bloem, repatriated from Indonesia in 1950. Her father is a survivor of the Junyo Maru disaster. Bloem, herself a psychologist, is married to Dutch author and physician Ivan Wolffers. In addition to her career as an author and film director, Bloem is a painter who exhibits around Europe.

On August 25 is the birthday of

Eduardo Naranjo, renowned Spanish painter and engraver born in 1944 in Monesterio, in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura.
I've already published about Naranjo and his work in a monographic post last year.

On August 26 is the birthday of

Léon Frédéric, Belgian Symbolism painter born in Brussels, in 1856. His earlier paintings joined Christian mysticism, pantheistic, and natural themes, while his later works increasingly reflected social themes.
Frédéric's work reflects influences of fifteenth and sixteenth century Flemish, as well as Renaissance painting styles.
He attended Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1871 to 1878, and was a pupil of the Neo-Classicist Jean-François Portaels. While attending the academy Frédéric made long trips to Italy from 1876 to 1878 to study with the Belgian sculptor Julien Dillens. While in Italy (Venice, Florence, Naples and Rome) he studied the works of Botticelli and Ghirlandaio, reinforcing his linear technique. In 1879, on his return from Italy, he made his debut at the Brussels Salon and became a member of the artist group L'Essor (artist group). In 1883, he moved to Nafraiture, in the Belgian Ardennes, and traveled extensively to England, Germany and the Netherlands. He moved to his final home in Schaerbeek in 1899, and continue to travel and exhibit his work in international fairs.
He died in 1940.

"Los ego-céntricos / The Ego-Centrics", 1940. Kameraclick

Él estudió arte en The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, y el Instituto Pratt.

On August 14 is the birthday of

Clarence John Laughlin, American photographer born in 1905 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, best known for his surrealist photographs of the U.S. South.
His rocky childhood, southern heritage, and interest in literature influenced his work greatly. After losing everything in a failed rice-growing venture in 1910, his family was forced to relocate to New Orleans where Laughlin's father found work in a factory. Laughlin was an introverted child with few friends and a close relationship with his father, who cultivated and encouraged his lifelong love of literature and whose death in 1918 devastated his son.
Although he dropped out of high school in 1920 after having barely completed his freshman year, Laughlin was an educated and highly literate man. His large vocabulary and love of language are evident in the elaborate captions he later wrote to accompany his photographs. He initially aspired to be a writer and wrote many poems and stories in the style of French symbolism, most of which remained unpublished.
Laughlin discovered photography when he was 25 and taught himself how to use a simple 2½ by 2¼ view camera. He began working as a freelance architectural photographer and was subsequently employed by agencies as varied as Vogue Magazine and the US government. Disliking the constraints of government work, Laughlin eventually left Vogue after a conflict with then-editor Edward Steichen. Thereafter, he worked almost exclusively on personal projects utilizing a wide range of photographic styles and techniques, from simple geometric abstractions of architectural features to elaborately staged allegories utilizing models, costumes, and props.
Through this period one of his favorite models was Dody Weston Thompson who went on to become a notable photographer in her own right.
Many historians credit Laughlin as being the first true surrealist photographer in the United States. His images are often nostalgic, reflecting the influence of Eugène Atget and other photographers who tried to capture vanishing urban landscapes. Laughlin's best-known book, Ghosts Along the Mississippi, was first published in 1948.
He died in 1985.

On August 15 is the birthday of

Patricio Guzmán Campos, Chilean photographer born in Santiago de Chile in 1935.
He began his work in 1958, as assistant to the legendary photographer Antonio Quintana, master of social photography in Chile. He then worked at the Central Photography Laboratory of the University of Chile, and in the 60's, he began working at the Experimental Cinema Center of the University of Chile, where he collaborated - as a videographer - with the Dutch documentary filmmaker Joris Ivens, in mythical "A Valparaiso" (1962), and in other films like "The smallest circus of the world" (1963), "The train of the victory" (1964), and "Temuco" (1972)
Photographers Domingo Ulloa and Luis Ladrón de Guevara were linked to Antonio Quintana in the production and development of the great photographic exhibition "Rostro de Chile", which under the cover of the University of Chile in 1960 was exposed in several countries to finish their tour in the World-wide Exhibition of Osaka (Japan) in 1969.
Patricio Guzmán Campos joined this team of teachers and parents of Chile's documentary and social photography and, from there, produced his work with themes and everyday characters. Under the guidance of Ladrón de Guevara he became an expert in aerial photography portraying the country aboard a Cessna-172. Some of his images were part of the last stage of Face of Chile.
He died in Montreal, Canada, in 2014.

On August 16 is the birthday of

Leslie Robert (Les) Krims, American conceptualist photographer born in 1942, living in Buffalo, New York. He is noted for his carefully arranged fabricated photographs (called "fictions"), various candid series, a satirical edge, dark humor, and long-standing criticism of what he describes as leftist twaddle.
He studied at New York's Stuyvesant High School. Richard Ben-Veniste ("Benti," as he was called in home-room at Stuyvesant), famous for prosecuting Richard Nixon, and A.D. Coleman, the former photography critic for The New York Times, were two of Krims' Stuyvesant classmates. Krims studied art at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and Pratt Institute. For the last 42 years he has taught photography, first at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and for the last 40 years at Buffalo State College, where he is a professor in the Department of Fine Arts. In describing his staged pictures, and the parodies of candid journalistic propaganda photographs he makes, Krims said, "It is possible to create any picture one imagines."
Les Krims has published numerous offset works. Two of these, "Fictcryptokrimsographs," and "Making Chicken Soup," were published by Humpy Press, which he founded and incorporated in the mid-1970s, and has since been dissolved. Krims has also published original print portfolios such as, "Idiosyncratic Pictures," and "Porsch Rainbows." Most recently (November 2005), a Photo Poche monograph, "Les Krims," edited by Robert Delpire, with an introduction by Bernard Noel, was published by Actes Sud, in France.

On August 17 is the birthday of

Isaiah West Taber, American daguerreotypist, ambrotypist, and photographer born in 1830 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, who took many pictures of noted Californians, which he donated to the California State Library "that the state may preserve the names and faces, and keep alive the memory of those who made it what it is." He was also a sketch artist and dentist. His studio also produced a series of stereoscopic views of west coast scenery.
Between 1845 and 1849 he worked at sea on a whaler. He first moved to California in 1850. He returned East in 1854 and opened up his first photography studio in Syracuse, New York. In 1864, he returned to California, where he worked in the studio of Bradley and Rulofson until 1873.
In 1871, Taber opened his own studio, where he gained fame for reproducing the photos of Carleton Watkins after Watkins went bankrupt, although the reproductions were published without credit to Watkins.
In 1880, Taber made a six-week photographic trip to the Hawaiian Islands where, among other subjects, he photographed the Hawaiian King Kalākaua, completing a commission for three full-length portraits. The following year Kalākaua visited Taber's studio in San Francisco. At this time the Japanese photographer Suzuki Shin'ichi (1855–1912) was studying photographic techniques with Taber; Suzuki also photographed King Kalākaua (in 1881) and may have been the source of some views of Japan included in Taber's stock.
By the 1890s, Taber had expanded his operations to include studios in London, England and in elsewhere Europe. However, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed his San Francisco studio, gallery, and negative collection, ending his photographic career.
He died in 1912.

On August 18 is the birthday of

Eva Rubinstein, Polish-American photographer born in Argentina in 1933, whose artistic works present portraits, nudes and interiors, often taken in Europe as well as the United States.
Rubinstein was born in Buenos Aires where her mother, the ballerina Nela Młynarska, was accompanying her father, the pianist Arthur Rubinstein, on a concert tour of South America. She was raised in Paris where she began to train as a ballet dancer at the age of five. In 1939, at the beginning of World War II, the family moved to the United States where Eva Rubinstein received American citizenship in 1946. She attended Scripps College in Claremont, California, and studied drama at the University of California, Los Angeles. From 1953, she worked as a dancer and actress in New York, appearing in the original production of "The Diary of Anne Frank.". In 1956, she married William Sloane Coffin and gave birth to three children, Amy, Alexander and David. The marriage ended in divorce in 1968.
In 1967, Rubinstein became seriously interested in photography, benefitting from workshops with Lisette Model and Diane Arbus. In addition to her work as a photojournalist, she has taken more intimate photographs of people, including nudes, and of (often empty) interiors. She has also led workshops at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan (1972) and at Manhattanville College, among many other venues in the US and Europe.

Today, August 19, is the birthday of

Louis Athol Shmith, celebrated studio portrait and fashion photographer, and photography educator in his home city of Melbourne, Australia, who contributed to the promotion of international photography within Australia as much as to the fostering of Australian photography in the world scene.
Shmith was born in 1914 and came from a comfortable and cultured middle-class family. He played the vibraphone and considered music as a possible career. His father gave him a camera as a teenager and what was a hobby became a profession in his late teens when Shmith, who had an interest in theatre and played at charity performances, was asked to take the publicity photographs and stills for a show. He saw there was a career in his former hobby and, supported by his family, established a studio in St Kilda. For the first five years he specialised in theatre work and society and wedding portraits through which he first made his reputation, but his professional break had come in the early 1930s when he gained the contract to take portraits of visiting celebrities for the newly formed Australian Broadcasting Commission.
In 1939 he moved to a studio in the Rue de la Paix building at 125 Collins Street. Shmith's work expanded to include a range of commercial advertising and illustration and appeared in local society magazines. He exhibited his works in photographic salons at home and abroad, gaining a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1933.
Influenced in his early career by the soft impressionistic style of turn-of-the-century art photographers, Shmith later embraced the clearer light, bolder compositions and design emphasis of art deco modernism which he admired in the fashion, product and portrait work of (Sir) Cecil Beaton, Edward Steichen and Hollywood portraitist George Hurrell. By the late 1930s, he was seen as representing a new modern style of work. After World War II Shmith embraced the "New Look" and the spirit of post-war recovery in fashion illustration, becoming the most respected professional in the field in Australia.
Athol Shmith's commercial career produced photographs that embodied a world of grace, glamour and allure. Throughout the 1960s Shmith remained energetic and dynamic in his development of fashion work, but by the close of the decade he took on roles in photographic heritage and education.
He died in 1900.

On August 20 is the birthday of

Jenny Girard de Vasson, French photographer born in La Châtre in 1872.
Daughter of a magistrate, Jenny de Vasson belonged to an old family of the Berry bourgeoisie, who enjoyed a certain ease. She received a solid education.
She began photographing in 1899, and traveled extensively, in France and Europe, bringing back many photographs of her travels.
During the First World War, retired in Berry with her family, she photographed the rural world that surrounded her.
Photography was for her a passion, not a craft. She photographed for her pleasure and that of her entourage, to keep memories, and not in a conscious artistic approach.
She died in 1920.
