Jenifer Renzel es una interesantísima artista estadounidense cuya práctica gira en torno a la pintura y el ensamblaje. Les presento una selección de su obra en un par de posts, el primero de los cuales (el segundo aquí) dedico a sus coloridas e imprevisibles pinturas, que a pesar de su caos aparente y origen espontáneo, de una u otra forma casi siempre incluyen o permiten intuir la presencia de seres singulares, animales fabulosos y bestias imposibles, algo siempre bienvenido en este blog con tendencias marcadamente animalistas.
Jenifer Renzel is a very interesting American artist whose practice revolves around painting and assemblage. Here you have a selection of her work in a couple of posts, the first of which - the second one here - I dedicate to her colorful and unpredictable paintings, that in spite of its apparent chaos and spontaneous origin, in one way or another almost always include or allow intuiting the presence of singular beings, fabulous animals and impossible beasts, something always welcome in this blog with markedly animalistic tendencies.

Jenifer J. Renzel
Jenifer J. Renzel es una artista estadounidense nacida en 1965. Se define a sí misma como una "artista de ensamblajes y pintora autodidacta con mucha imaginación", algo bastante fácil de ver en sus coloridas pinturas y curiosas piezas de ensamblaje.
Comenzó en el arte en serio hace diez años, después de un realizar un taller con un artista de ensamblajes.
"El taller era de tipo libre y cautivante, con materiales interesantes y basura recuperada. Completamente inspirada, comencé a estudiar la obra de otros artistas del ensamblaje y a recolectar materiales. Pasé horas tratando de ver cómo las cosas descartadas podrían encajar para hacer algo hermoso y fantástico. Trabajé en cajas expositoras y esculturas cuando no estaba en mi empleo. Pronto comencé a mostrar mi obra y ahora lo vendo tan rápido como lo hago".

«Tuve varios comienzos en falso con la pintura, pero no sabía qué o cómo quería pintar. Sabía que el realismo no era para mí, pero no estaba segura de dónde estaba mi lugar. Después de algunas exploraciones, encontré la inspiración de artistas marginales, especialmente de aquellos que ponen gran imaginación en su trabajo. No hay reglas en este rincón del mundo del arte y puedes hacer lo que quieras siempre y cuando provenga de tu interior y de tu trabajo.
Tuve un gran avance después de tomar un taller del artista marginal Jesse Reno. Me enseñó un enfoque que es muy liberador: empiezas desde el fondo, construyes capas de colores y contrastes interesantes, y luego sacas el tema en función de lo que visualizas allí. No comienzas con el final en mente.»

"He estado usando este enfoque de vez en cuando. Me encanta cómo el trabajo se une en parte por casualidad y en parte por diseño. Los resultados son interesantes de una manera que no creo que se pueda planear. Algunas de mis mejores piezas provienen de girar la pintura y cambiar completamente la orientación y el tema. Mi estilo sigue evolucionando, y estoy empezando a incluir elementos que podrían considerarse más hacia la ilustración o el arte callejero.
Quiero que mi arte atraiga y sorprenda a los espectadores, y creo que parte de esto incluye empujarme y sorprenderme a mí misma. Cuando comienzo una nueva pieza normalmente no tengo idea de adonde me llevará. Tengo momentos importantes en el camino con muchos errores que requieren una revisión. Creo que esto es lo que hace que mi obra sea interesante y sorprendente.»

«Tengo algunos muy buenos libros de lujo ilustrados de mis artistas favoritos. Tengo a Basquiat, colecciones de artistas dadaístas, libros con pósters de películas de monstruos japoneses de época, libros educativos de arte y varias colecciones de arte marginal. También tengo algunos tableros de Pinterest y colecciones de imágenes que a menudo me inspiran. A veces tan solo dejo vagar mi imaginación antes de quedarme dormida. Me sorprende cómo mi mente da vueltas entre las las ideas y vuelve con imágenes; siento casi como si vagara fuera de mí.»

Cuando se le pregunta sobre sus mayores desafíos en la creación de arte, Jenifer dice:
«El primer desafío es encontrar el tiempo. A veces me pregunto si debo renunciar al trabajo diario y realmente centrarme en mi arte. He pensado en esto, pero no he sido capaz de hacerlo. Ni siquiera estoy segura de que sea lo correcto. Tal vez mi arte sea mejor por el hecho de atesorar el tiempo que encuentro para dedicarme a él.
Otro reto para mí es la paciencia. Esto es especialmente cierto cuando se pinta. Cualquier pintor sabe que realmente puede arruinar un buen trabajo si no sabe cuándo alejarse por un tiempo. Tienes que dejar que la pintura se seque, y en mi caso a veces simplemente tengo que parar después de hacer algo "bien". Si no lo hago, trataré de hacer mejor lo que ya está bien, y terminaré exagerándolo o arruinándolo. Además, a veces una pintura que comienza a molestarme se ve realmente genial cuando vuelvo a verla al día siguiente.»

Jenifer J. Renzel is an American artist born in 1965. She defines herself as a "self-taught assemblage artist and painter with lots of imagination", something easy to see in her colorful paintings and curious assemblage pieces.
She began in art seriously ten years ago after a workshop from an assemblage artist.
"The workshop was free form and captivating, with interesting materials and salvaged junk provided. Completely inspired, I began studying the work of other assemblage artists and collecting materials. I spent hours trying to see how discarded things might fit together to make something beautiful and eerie. I worked on shadow boxes and sculptures whenever I wasn’t at my day job. Soon I began showing my work, and now I sell it about as fast as I can make it."

«I made several false starts with painting, but didn’t know what or how I wanted to paint. I knew that realism wasn’t for me, but wasn’t sure where my place was. After some exploration, I found inspiration from outsider artists, especially those who put raw imagination into their work. There are no rules in this corner of the art world and you can do whatever you want as long as it comes from inside you and works.
I had a breakthrough after taking a workshop from the outsider artist Jesse Reno. He taught me an approach that is very freeing -- you start from the background, build up layers of interesting color and contrast, and then bring out the subject based on what you visualize there. You don’t start with the end in mind.»

«I’ve been using this approach on and off ever since. I love how the work comes together partly by chance and partly by design. The results are interesting in a way I don’t think I could ever plan. Some of my best pieces come from turning the painting upside down and completely changing the orientation and subject matter. My style continues to evolve, and I am starting to include elements that might be considered more towards illustration or street art.
I want my art to engage and surprise viewers, and I think part of this includes pushing and surprising myself. When I start a new piece, I typically have no idea where it will take me. I have breakthrough moments along the way with plenty of mistakes that require rework. I think this is what makes my work interesting and surprising.»

«I have some really good coffee-table books with glossies of my favorite artists. I have Basquiat, collections of Dada artist, books with vintage Japanese monster movie posters, instructional art books, and several collections of outsider art. I also have some great Pinterest boards and image collections that often inspire me. Sometimes, I just let my imagination wander before I fall asleep. It’s surprising to me how my mind will just flip through ideas and come up with images – it feels almost driven from outside of me.»

When asked about her biggest challenges in creating art, Jenifer says:
«The first challenge is just finding the time. I sometimes ask myself if I should give up the day job and really pursue my art. I have thought about this, but have not been able to bring myself to do it. I’m not even sure it would be the right thing to do. Maybe my art is better because I treasure time I find to pursue it.
Another challenge for me is patience. This is especially true when painting. Any painter knows that you can really mess up good work if you don’t know when to step away for awhile. You have to let the paint dry, and for me, sometimes I just need to stop after doing something “right.” If I don’t, I will try to make that right thing better, and overdo it or ruin it. Also, sometimes a painting that is starting to bother me looks really cool when I come back to it the next day.»

Jesse Reno es un pintor y muralista autodidacta estadounidense.
Su arte se basa en su interés por las sociedades nativas y primitivas. El propio Reno califica su arte como neo-primitivismo. Nació con una fiebre extrema, que causó graves daños en su nervio óptico. Su visión dañada causa extrañas distorsiones en la percepción profunda, lo que lo obliga a permanecer siempre cerca de sus obras mientras pinta.
«Soy un pintor autodidacta de técnicas mixtas. Me he ganado la vida con mi arte durante los últimos 12 años. En ese tiempo he creado más de 4000 pinturas. Mis precios han subido un 1000%. He vendido casi el 90% de todo lo que he creado. He sido el único gerente de mi carrera sin formación en negocios. He expuesto en más de 100 galerías. Jesse Reno is a self-taught American painter and muralist.
His art is based on his interest in native and primitive societies. Reno himself terms his art as neo-primitivism. He was born with an extreme fever, which caused severe damage to his optic nerve. His damaged vision causes strange distortions in depth perception, forcing him to always stay close to his works while painting.
«I am a self taught mixed media painter. I've been supporting myself from my art for the last 12 years. In that time i've created over 4000 paintings. My prices have risen 1000%. I have sold almost 90% of everything i have created. I have been the sole manager of my career with no business background. I have shown in over 100 galleries. I have taught my techniques and ideas about painting extensively in the US, Canada, Australia, and Mexico. I do not do commercial work. Kinki Texas es un artista alemán nacido en 1969. Comenzó a mostrar su trabajo en exposiciones individuales y colectivas en 1987. En 1994 comenzó a trabajar con técnicas digitales. Desde 1999 realiza animaciones tridimensionales, instalaciones de video y videos musicales.
Tiene una maestría en estudios culturales y filosofía en la Universidad de Bremen.
La obra de Kinki Texas aparece como un crisol de fantasía histórica y retratos de vaqueros, de una estampida de una escuela de armas durante la Guerra de las Rosas. Esta estética única es producto de su proceso técnico: los motivos y los diferentes estados de las imágenes se apilan capa por capa hasta que se crea la imagen perfecta. Este proceso puede extenderse durante varios años, permitiendo que la imagen se encuentre en medio de la compleja textura plástica de la superficie de trabajo, que posteriormente se convierte en un evento estético. Uno es llevado a imaginar lo que brilla detrás de la superficie lechosa, descifrar lo que está escrito, ver lo que se informa, seguir las líneas y comprender la composición.

Kinki Texas is a German artist born in 1969. He shows his work in solo and group exhibitions since 1987. In 1994 he started to work with digital techniques. Since 1999 he performs three-dimentional animations, video installations and music videos.
He has a Master's degree in cultural studies and philosophy at the University of Bremen.
The work of Kinki Texas appears like a melting pot of historical fantasy and cowboy portraits- of a weapons school stampede during Rose Wars. This unique aesthetic is a product of his technical process: Motifs and and different states of images are stacked, layer by layer until the perfect image is created. This process may extend over several years, allowing the image to be found amidst in the complex, plastic texture of the work surface, which subsequently becomes an aesthetic event. One is led to imagine what shines through behind the milky surface, decipher what is written, see what is reported, follow the lines and understand the composition.

Fred Stonehouse recibió su Licenciatura en Bellas Artes de UW Milwaukee en 1982. Tuvo su primera exposición individual en Chicago en 1983 y expone regularmente en Nueva York en la Galería Howard Scott y en Los Ángeles con Koplin / DelRio. Ha expuesto en México, Ámsterdam, Roma y Berlín. Ha recibido una subvención NEA Arts Midwest y la subvención para artistas individuales de la Fundación Joan Mitchell. Actualmente es profesor asociado de pintura y dibujo en la Universidad de Wisconsin.

Fred Stonehouse received his BFA from UW Milwaukee in 1982. He has been the recipient of an NEA Arts Midwest Grant and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Individual Artists Grant. He is currently an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Wisconsin.
